Democrats to meet for Spanish debate [Tonight for the first debate broadcast entirely in Spanish]

Democrats to meet for Spanish debate

By NEDRA PICKLER, Associated Press Writer 17 minutes ago

Democratic presidential candidates were meeting Sunday night for the first debate broadcast entirely in Spanish, the clearest sign yet of the growing influence of Hispanic voters.

The debate at the University of Miami will be broadcast by Univision, the nation's fifth-most watched network.

Anchors Jorge Ramos and Maria Elena Salinas will pose questions in Spanish and the candidates will wear earpieces to hear simultaneous translations into English. Similarly, their English answers will be translated into Spanish for the live, 90-minute broadcast.

English-speaking viewers can watch using the closed caption service on their televisions.

Two participants — New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson and Connecticut Sen. Chris Dodd — have objected to the format because they speak Spanish and want to address the viewing audience directly. Debate rules say all answers must be in English to level the contest, but it was unclear whether Richardson or Dodd would comply.

Other participants include Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York and Barack Obama of Illinois, former Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina, Ohio Rep. Dennis Kucinich and former Alaska Sen. Mike Gravel.

Delaware Sen. Joe Biden, recently returned from a trip to Iraq, is skipping the debate to prepare for Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearings he will chair Tuesday with Gen. David Petraeus, the top U.S. commander in Iraq, and Ryan Crocker, U.S. ambassador to Iraq.

Candidates in both parties are reaching out to Hispanic voters with an intensity that speaks to the importance of the nation's largest and fastest-growing minority group in the campaign.

So much for learning English. The Democrats have found it necessary to demote the very essence of being American in a squalid bid to win a handful of votes from the La Raza crowd.

Richardson has a Mexican mother and has made overt appeals to Hispanic voters, including announcing his candidacy in English and Spanish. He has said he doesn't think many Hispanics realize he is one of them.

Interesting. One of "them."

I am sure he means "American." He does mean "American" right?

News like this makes me so mad...if you’re gonna live in America, LEARN ENGLISH! Why should we have to change our ways to pander to everyone else? They came here, so THEY should be the ones to learn the customs...and the language.

Was considering asking whether any of the candidates was even close to fluent in Spanish, but the article mentions that they'll have earpieces.

This is another case in point of the Democrats working for their own political success without working for the success of the nation. They should be encouraging all immigrants--and all Americans--to be fluent in English and to use English as their primary language, at least outside of the house. Instead, they pander to those who are unwilling or haven't yet become fluent in English, and further weaken those people's prospects for being assimilated into American society.

Richardson isn't so bright, and isn't presidential material--this from watching one of the Democratic debates.

He seems to be an uninformed follower (being a follower isn't a bad thing, but a President should be a leader). It's surprising that he was able to get New Mexicans to vote him in as governor.

The cold hard political facts: in the 2006 elections, 21% of the electorate was non-white. Ignore them at your peril. George W. Bush was the first President to give an address in Spanish. The President’s nephew, Jeb’s son George Prescott Bush campaigned for the President in Mexico with American expatriates living down there.
Welcome to the 21st century.

The Democrat Party cares nothing about customs and language, if they get in the way of their quest for power.

I totally agree. See citizenship requirements below.

Language

Applicants for naturalization must be able to read, write, speak, and understand words in ordinary usage in the English language. Applicants exempt from this requirement are those who on the date of filing:

have been residing in the United States subsequent to a lawful admission for permanent residence for at least 15 years and are over 55 years of age;

have been residing in the United States subsequent to a lawful admission for permanent residence for at least 20 years and are over 50 years of age; or

have a medically determinable physical or mental impairment, where the impairment affects the applicant’s ability to learn English.

Why not have the debate in Farsi?

The only thing your post tells me is that Bush and his family could care less about this country.

But I already knew that.

Yes, welcome to the 21st century indeed. I think we need to go back a few centuries to look for some inspirational leaders because there are none now.

>> The cold hard political facts: in the 2006 elections, 21% of the electorate was non-white. <<

The cold hard political facts: MOST of the non-whites in this country speak ENGLISH. Black Americans overwhelmingly speak English as their first language and oppose pandering to voters "en espanol". American Indians speak English fluently. Most legal immigrants who have assimilated to become citizens speak English fluently.

The small minority of "non-whites" who won't get off their butts and learn English after years of being here, like Elvira Arellano the criminal fugitive, can take a long walk off a short pier. If I was moving to THEIR country I'd sure as hell learn THEIR language. To live somewhere where you can't communicate with the locals is the height of ignorance.

Of course if Congress were smart, they'd just bar people who lack a basic understanding of English from being able to vote, and then we'd have no excuse to host debates "en espanol"

Try going to Mexico and hosting an political forum entirely in English. Let me know how it went.

“Interesting. One of “them.”

I am sure he means “American.” He does mean “American” right?”

Does being an American somehow negate his being Hispanic? I don’t care much about my whiteness, but I doubt I’d want to give it up for a generic all-encompassing label.

'non-white' and non-Anglophone are two very separate things.

Though would agree that conservatives should work more to bring those of non-European descent into the fold if they want to survive as a dominant or major political entity in this nation.

I would venture to guess that there are plenty of “non- criminal”, illegal alien supporting Republicans, including Freepers, who think we must take a “reasonable” and “workable” approach to illegal immigration, who wouldn’t mind a bit if our candidates pandered similarily.

We are a nation of laws.

Illegal is illegal is illegal.

Period.

This was never necessary before and it should not be necessary now.

If they do not speak English, they should not vote.

Democrats are priming the 12+ million illegals to vote for them.

The 2008 elections will end up a fraud. Don’t doubt it. We will never have a true fairly clean election again in this country.

The only question that should be asked is, “Should illegal immigrants be deported?”

Let them spend the next 90 minutes answering that question.

The Republicans then have the same debate.

"If the spread of Spanish as the United States' second language continues, it could, in due course, have significant consequences in politics and government. In many states, those aspiring to political office might have to be fluent in both languages. Bilingual candidates for president and elected federal positions would have an advantage over English-only speakers. If dual-language education becomes prevalent in elementary and secondary schools, teachers will increasingly be expected to be bilingual. Government documents and forms could routinely be published in both languages. The use of both languages could become acceptable in congressional hearings and debates and in the general conduct of government business. Because most of those whose first language is Spanish will also probably have some fluency in English, English speakers lacking fluency in Spanish are likely to be and feel at a disadvantage in the competition for jobs, promotions, and contracts."

"In 1917, former U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt said: “We must have but one flag. We must also have but one language. That must be the language of the Declaration of Independence, of Washington's Farewell address, of Lincoln's Gettysburg speech and second inaugural.” By contrast, in June 2000, U.S. president Bill Clinton said, “I hope very much that I'm the last president in American history who can't speak Spanish.” And in May 2001, President Bush celebrated Mexico's Cinco de Mayo national holiday by inaugurating the practice of broadcasting the weekly presidential radio address to the American people in both English and Spanish. In September 2003, one of the first debates among the Democratic Party's presidential candidates also took place in both English and Spanish. Despite the opposition of large majorities of Americans, Spanish is joining the language of Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, the Roosevelts, and the Kennedys as the language of the United States. If this trend continues, the cultural division between Hispanics and Anglos could replace the racial division between blacks and whites as the most serious cleavage in U.S. society."
