Opposition figure jailed in Belarus for 'insulting president'

Moscow - A court in the Belarusian capital Minsk has sentenced an opposition leader to two years in a punishment camp for criticizing authoritarian President Aleksander Lukashenko, a Russian radio station reported Sunday. Andrei Klimow was accused of insulting the president in an internet article, Echo Moskwy radio reported colleagues of the opposition politician as saying.

The legal process took place behind closed doors. There was no statement from the authorities as to why it was held in secret.

Lukashenko, ruling since 1994, has been described by critics as the "last dictator in Europe." In recent times the former Soviet republic has seen harsher police and legal action against opponents of the regime.

This was the first time an opposition figure had been charged over an internet article. Human rights activists said Klimow's article contained nothing criminal or libelous.

Didn’t the Clintoons have someone, ah, detained, for showing their middle finger puppet to them?

If Hillary is elected she’ll be trying this sometime during her first two years. She’ll characterize it differently, but she’ll be jailing political enemies.

Aleksander Lukashenko is no Putin, and it is wrong to try to put the two men in the same category. First, Luka is less slick and polished that Putin, and has cracked down much more than Putin. Luka is in effect “President for Life” while Putin’s term expires, and he will probably not try to become “President for Life.”
Putin has harmed the budding democratic institutions in Russia, but he has strengthened the central government that was close to falling apart under Yeltsin. Also, Putin has instituted reform, allowing private ownership of land and the expansion of the free market. Putin is not a communist, nor is he a dictator, probably something in between. Luka is a dictator and has done little to foster the free market in Belarus other than allow small businesses and for people to own their own flats, etc.

Honestly I have no idea why author claims that in “recent times....”. This was always a norm over there, for example in Belarus.
