New Haven Issues 3,200 City ID Cards To Immigrants Cards Designed To Help Illegal Immigrants Gain Access To Community Services
(AP) NEW HAVEN, Conn. The city's new identification card program, which has drawn criticism because it is open to illegal immigrants, has been much more of a success than officials expected.
New Haven began issuing the ID cards to city residents on July 24, and city leaders estimated that 5,000 of them would be handed out in the first year. But officials say they have already distributed 3,226 cards.
The city also has plans to sign up more people by bringing the ID equipment to churches, community groups and senior centers.
"We are hoping to do some work with the schools, as well," said Kica Matos, New Haven's community services administrator.
The ID cards are believed to be the first in the country specifically designed to bring illegal immigrants out of the shadows and give them access to community services. But they are available to all city residents.
The program was created to help people without state- or federal-issued IDs open bank accounts and use other services that would otherwise be inaccessible. Supporters say that if immigrants can open bank accounts, they will be less likely to carry large amounts of cash and reduce the chances of getting robbed.
An estimated 10,000 to 12,000 of New Haven's 125,000 residents are believed to be in the country illegally.

I live right outside of New Haven...I had to commute their every day for a college course. It is a disgusting, filthy city. The crime is out of control.
A Rabbi was attacked a few months ago in the Edgewood section of new haven. The police were not sucessfully providing any security to the area, so a group of orthodox Jews with guns started patrolling the neighborhood to deter crime (it worked). The liberal went nuts.
After this, it will be 60,000 of 100,000 (this includes provision for overtaxed and white flight).
Attorney General Blumenthal has declared that these ID cards are not be used for Identification for voting. That is one good thing out of this outrageous plan by Mayor John DeStefano.
Pull federal funding immediately.

Yes, they are treasonous libs. But ironically these very same libs are freely distributing ID's to illegal aliens precisely because they know Bush isn't enforcing our immigration laws, so they have nothing to worry about. These are strange times we live in, very strange.

What New Haven is doing is clearly contrary to the "uniform rule" standard set in the Constitution. They should be brought back into conformance ~ by force if necessary.

White flight has been occurring in New Haven for the last 20 years and its only accelerating.The taxes are terrible and what’s worse its a lousy One party Socialist Demo-rat town.
The only thing that keeps New Haven going is the extraordinary amount of Tax dollars flowing there from the Citizens of the State of Connecticut.
If it were not for the Nonprofit institutions in the city it would have gone bankrupt years ago.

Thank you for saying what I was going to say. New Haven will get what it deserves for this move. I only feel sorry for any conservatives who happen to live there. I hope they move out.
With a change of leadership at the local or state level, these cards will be a great help in finding and rounding up the illegal invaders.
It looks like this program could help terrorists.
