George Washington was not just General Washington but also President Washington. Those similarities are there with Fred. I take Fred’s words that he is willing to serve, but not wanting power just for the sake of power. He is trying to contrast himself with Clintons.

A lot of people believe we need Fred, just like a lot of people believed way back when that they needed Washington. A draft movement for both of them. Washington didn’t try to hang on to power, IIRC he was the one who wanted to limit terms of presidents. He could have served another term and wouldn’t. Fred believes in term limits. Didn’t make a lifetime career of the Senate. That is refreshing to me.

They don’t have to be just exactly the same to have similarities and comparisons in some respects.

my dad always said this country was founded on the character of George Washington. some would argue that his post-military exploits outweigh any other aspect of his life (let's face it, he wasn't all that great of a general in terms of tactics). but he had guts and guts is enough, as they say.

but he was the only one who could have been the first President. without him, the country would have fractured.

about as many folksy aphorisms as there are catfish in a Mississippi mud pond.

How does a liberal Jew from New York end up sounding like a paroidy of Dan Rather.?At least Rather has probably seen a real, live catfish.

Actually, he was a better than average tactician. His Christian attacks on Trenton and Princeton were conducted withy as much skill as some of Stonewall Jackson’s battle’s in the valley. Monmouth have been a victory if Lee hadn;t botched the attack. He was also incredibly brave. He personally led the attack on the bridge at Trenton. Anyway, whatever he lacked in generalship, he made up in leadership.

A lot of people believe we need Fred, just like a lot of people believed way back when that they needed Washington.

Again, the people of that time realized that without the contribution that General Washington had already made, the United States of America would not exist. There is simply nothing in Fred Thompson's background that can compete with this qualification. Maybe no one will ever have this qualification again. The last candidate to be even remotely similar was probably Dwight Eisenhower.

Again, George Washington was someone who had almost universal appeal to the people of the United States. No one could argue with his selection to be our first president. At that time, there was no real popular vote, but every electoral college representative who voted gave one of his two votes to George Washington. Maybe no one will ever again be in a position that would allow every electoral college member to give him a vote, but Fred Thompson certainly wouldn't be the guy who could draw that kind of support if it were possible. At this point, Fred Thompson isn't even the universal choice of Republicans.

I realize that many FReepers passionately support Fred Thompson, but the notion that Mr. Thompson's support among the general population is in any way analogous to the support that General Washington had is silly. You make yourselves and you make Mr. Thompson look silly when you suggest such a thing. I'm not trying to flame FredHeads, but making statements that show so little understanding of our history or that slant our history so wildly is not a sound tactic.
