TUCSON, Ariz (Reuters) - Pilot Rich Rouviere gazes through night vision goggles as he speeds the Black Hawk helicopter to where a high-tech drone far above has pinpointed 11 intruders from Mexico.

As he sets the aircraft down in a swirling tornado of dust and debris, two agents in military style fatigues and flak jackets jump out and swiftly round up all but two of them, illuminated by a laser from the drone. From alert to arrest, the operation has taken 17 minutes.

A good fence is cheaper, and works 24/7.

Land mines would be cheaper and more effective.

Strict enforcement of our existing immigration laws would be the best fence as it would discourage would be illegals from entering the country.

Reality check. 9 illegals apprehended in 17 minutes. How long before the paddy wagon arrives? 2 hours- 3 hours? How many copters on duty every hour? This is like putting eyedroppers on the Titanic.

The resources are being squandered on small groups and individuals while the Coyotes and smugglers bring them through by the truck load.

Fence. Barbed Wire. Land Mines. Guard Towers. Machine Guns. Groin-Biting Dogs with Bad Dispositions.

A great start, but hey, ya know how many cross EVERY NIGHT?

Between 5,000 to 10,000.

Every night.

A good fence only slows them down 24/7. Without the personell, and equipment to back the fence up it is worthless. It is a common practice for coyotes to send two or three Illegals over a 10” high steel fence to draw the BP to them, they climb back when BP gets there, and a big group goes over the fence somewhere else. It’s quick and easy with ropes.

No one is arguing that point, but a fence is better than no fence at all.

All we need are some politicians with the cojones to fund the fence construction and the personnel to patrol it. It would pay for itself almost immediately.

Freeper Travis McGee had a great post about fences and such. You should go check it out.

That is a great post, thanks.

A fence is a force multiplier, not a hermetic seal.

Since 30% enter legally then jump visa, employer sanctions are the ultimate solution which must be coupled with denial of social net goodies from city and state governments.

How much does it cost to keep one helicopter in the air for one hour? How many hours of maintenance? How many hundreds of thousands of dollars does it cost to train the helicopter mechanics, ground support and pilots? How many million for the drones, the ground support and “pilots” of those?

This is just another government hand out and a boondoggle for so little in return.

What a total WASTE of taxpayer monies.

I say just grant “temporary work visas” to Jose’ and Hose-B....slam a 20% “construction fee” on all electronic remittances from the US to Messico, call in some concrete trucks.... bring in the 12x12’s, slam up the forms and start pouring. We could have REAL border security for 1/100th the cost of this “virtual” border security by building the friggin’ wall.

Too large of a helicopter carrying too large of a payload very inefficiently.

Cheaper and more effectively using a smaller payload: The NRI Autocopter.
