No major IDF response to Qassam strike in Negev due to tensions in north

It appears that Israel's response to a Qassam rocket attack on an Israel Defense Forces base in the northern Negev early Tuesday, which left at least 66 soldiers wounded, will likely be limited, due mainly to recent tensions with Syria.
It is Israel's policy at this time not to invest too many resources in Gaza, the source of the Qassam rockets, when these resources could potentially be required should conflict erupt in the north.
Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on Tuesday convened several consultation sessions in order to discuss Israel's possible response to the rocket attack. Olmert is scheduled to meet Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni and Defense Minister Ehud Barak as well as the heads of the defense establishment. The prime minister may also convene the cabinet.

Not really that amazing. It’s to be expected, given the weakness of the current Israeli government & the high tensions with Syria at the moment.

Neutered.
Pathetic.
This is not Israel.
It is France.

If they don't want to divert troops in large numbers to the south, how about a few M777 155mm howitzers?
The Qassam3 has a range of 10km whereas the M777 has a range of 24km even without RAP.
This would make for nice counter battery fire. Counter battery fireis legitimate. If nearby apartment buildings get hit by counter battery fire, so be it. That would be the fault of the HAMAS irregulars who set up their rocket launchers in a residential area, not of the battery that simply returned fire to the point of origin of the Quassam attack.

GAG! Ben-Gurion and Golda are rolling in their graves. Back in their day, they’d have long responded to these provocations, kicking major @ss and taking names later.

... the world, including the Bush administration would howl about proportionality. Let them howl. What's worse, getting killed or worrying what others might think? The arabs perceive weakness and that will only encourage them.
