What follows is a succession of "BREAKING NEWS" bulletins, as they happened live, beginning with WNYW-TV in New York. WNYW (Channel 5) was the first TV station in the world to interrupt their regular programming with the breaking news at 8:48 that morning, just two minutes after the impact. CNN's "breaking news" bulletin follows at 8:49, and so on. Included in this "BREAKING NEWS" segment are the original bulletins from WCBS-TV (Channel 2, New York), WNBC-TV (Channel 4, New York), WABC-TV (Channel 7, New York), Fox News Channel, WPIX-TV (Channel 11, New York), NY1 (New York One, All News), MSNBC, CBS News, ABC News and NBC News. (Also included in this segment, for the sake of completeness, is an original "breaking news" audio bulletin from a local NYC news radio station, WCBS-AM 880. Accompanying this audio-only clip is some generic "B-Roll" video footage from the streets of Manhattan that morning)
I didn’t see any of it. I was on Capitol Hill that morning attending a hearing in the Senate Banking Committee. Didn’t even know about the WTC attack until about 10:30 a.m. when I made my way over to my husband’s office. People were running all over the place and nobody knew what was going on. I didn’t see any of the film until the afternoon after we drove past the burning Pentagon to pick my daughter up at preschool and went home. I still can’t believe that millions of people actually watched that second plane go into the tower. As traumatic as the day was for me, I am still glad I wasn’t watching it unfold on TV.
I homeschooled, so my 13 year old and I were watching on TV after the first plane hit (they were saying at the time it was a small plane), then my son noticed the second plane right behind the tower, pointed it out to me, and then we saw the explosion. It was surreal.
great, thanks for posting.
One of the posts was “If this is terrorism...”
If only they knew right then and there how right they were...
As for where I was on 9/11...
I was 12 years old on September 11, 2001. I remember coming in to English class and seeing the TV on. I saw the World Trade Center with black smoke coming out of it. My teacher told me that a plane had crashed into it. At first I thought maybe it was an accident, but then a second one crashed. I knew it was no accident then. Throughout the day we continued hearing of plane crashes; the Pentagon, and Flight 93 in Pennsylvania. My mom picked me up early from school. Since we live just 40 miles from DC, a potential target, she was taking no chances. We watched the news for hours. I really could not believe what had just happened. I remember the horrible images of fire and smoke blasting out of the Twin Towers, and a still shot of an airplane just feet from one of the towers. I can only imagine what went through those peoples heads; how horrifying it must have been to realize they were inches from a terrible death with nothing they could do. I went outside later in the day, and I saw an airplane pass by overhead. My only thought was, Is it happening again?
My English teachers sister worked at the World Trade Center, but on the morning of September 11 she didnt hear her alarm go off and slept through it, thus making her late and she missed the train to work. Her life was spared by a fateful coincidence of sleeping in on just the right morning.
One of my teachers had recently given her guinea pigs to me to take care of since she was moving, and wanted to come visit them. A week before 9/11 we were deciding on a date for her to come over. We chose the 11th. But even then I had this fishy feeling, like it just wasnt going to work out for some reason and that she wouldnt be able to see her guinea pigs. And sure enough, our plans didnt work out.
NEVER SURRENDER! NEVER FORGET!

I was standing near the top of some tower made out of brown brick. For some reason I was holding my calculator, and on the screen were animated graphics of explosions. The view switched to a front view of the tower. An airplane could be seen off to the right coming straight at the tower. Then there was a white flash. And then I woke up.
That was the dream I had the night before 9/11
Another thing I remember is that on the Monday after 9/11 just after midnight, the aurora borealis could be seen as far south as Maryland. They were very faint, but they were there. I watched them from the bathroom window, but the odd thing about this display was that it was not just streaks of light, it seemed to light up the whole sky. And odder still is that the only color that seemed to show was red, as if to symbolize the blood of the innocent shed the week before.
May we never forget.
It was such a nice morning until then. Weather here was so nice. Then pandemonium struck. Everyone was asking what kind of plane, was it terrorism, etc? No one knew.
When i read a post saying a second plane hit the other tower I refused to accept it and posted a reply here on FR saying I thought that was a sick joke. I hope whoever I addressed that to did not take offense and has forgiven me. It was almost too much to handle though.
Went to the “as it happened on FR link.” My body is covered in goosebumps.
Bookmarked.
The guy was reporting on the second plane that hit and said "something must be very wrong with the air traffic navigational system"
I am doing my best here to try not to sound like John Kerry, but I immediately deemed this terrorism and thought what a naive idiot.
That was 6 years ago today and the same people who report the news still have not changed.
I was watching some videos on youtube this morning and watched part 2 of the CBS coverage which deals with the second plane going into the WTC.
Bryant Gumble had an eyewitness on the phone who kept saying the planes were intentionally flown into the buildings and Gumble kept asking him, over and over, why are you saying it was intentional.
Finally the man said, “What kind of coincidence do you think it would take for 2 planes to hit each tower on a clear day.”
Gumble was incredulous.
I had stayed over at my parents to do some work for them around their place. My grandmother was in the hospital for moderately serious surgery, and I was going to visit her that morning.
Had gotten on and off FR minutes before the plane hit, I had remembered someone mentioning here of possible terrorist attacks around that time and had kept a fairly close eye on the news.
Didn’t see anything, went out to the car and turned on the radio to a station I liked but wasn’t coming in good. Could just barely make out that a plane had hit the WTC. First word in my mind was ‘terrorists’. I immediately ran back in jumped on FR, which by then was pretty clogged, but I did manage to read about the second tower hit.
I can’t even remember if I turned on the TV at all, but I finally left for the hospital and when I got there the 2nd tower had fallen. My grandmother had a distant look in her eye and said it reminded her of Pearl Harbor.
Most what I remember on FR was Huck and his first hand accounts. Chilling. I was glued to FR all day and nite.
The other thing I remember is a clear sky, no planes in siight, and the Air Force One and military jets flying right over the house. Extremely eerie.
It all really hit home when a few days later it was found out that there were several planes that were grounded that had terrorists on them and were planning to hit other buildings that day across the country. I realized what they had truly planned for us and that we were in the dogfight for our lives.
Ummm......have you had any other strange dreams like that lately? Keep us informed,.......
Bump for later
Thanks finn.
