Fred! Fred!
Hes here. Hes tanned. Hes ready.
He looks like he needs a nap.
When it comes to overhyped underperformers, Fred Thompsons entry into the presidential race was right up there with Britney Spears at the MTV awards.
The Republican Partys great tall hope announced his intentions on Jay Lenos show, and timed it to coincide with his avoidance of the candidate debate in New Hampshire. That was supposed to send the message of what? A fear of crowds? A preference for answering questions only while seated? His performance certainly could not have been more low-key. You do not often hear somebody say Im running for president in the same tone Jays guests use to announce that theyve signed on for the next season of Dancing With the Stars.
Then Thompson climbed onto a bus for a trip through Iowa and other states that are going to be first to vote, even if they have to hold the elections tomorrow. It quickly became apparent that whatever our newest top-tier candidate had been up to during those long months of water-testing did not involve practicing a speech. In Iowa, he rambled. The Daily News reported that at one town hall meeting he seemed to be telling the audience that Americans were winning over Iraqis because of Al Qaedas no-smoking policy...
...Thompson, by all accounts, was indeed an underachiever who rose to fame and fortune mainly through powerful friends and good luck. The perfect answer for a country reeling from two terms with an underachiever who rose to fame and fortune mainly through powerful friends and good genes. And so far at least, its working in the polls. An affable guy who doesnt try hard what could be more refreshing?

Haha, so he’s only up by 9 pts today.. It’s obviously been a failure /s
Even funnier, the NYTimes doesn’t bother to actually read the news so they are unaware of the fact that Thompson really was correct about the smoking issue.
I bet a dollar that not one in one hundred voters will even recall that oh-so important New Hampshire debate when November 08 rolls around.
I read this column this morning, and I must say that Collins gives that Morphodite freak in SF a good run for his money when it comes to writing vapid columns.
A few hundred words about how FT looks tired, or is lazy. I would call the columnist lazy and tired for having absolutely nothing important to say.

Your fear is showing ... honey.
As I recall, a certain JFK was considered the Senator without achievement. The only claim that he had while a congressman/senator was that he fully back McCarthy commie hunt. If my memory serves, he never sponsored any serious legislation. That being said, if all these critiques of Fred are true, are they not also true of Obama?
They probably won't remember it when November '07 rolls around.
Whether it be Gail Coillins, Bob Novak, Paul Weyrich or George Will. Buncha whining coming from all quarters today. From the loony left, the perpetually pissed off, the crying right wingers and the Giuliani butt lisser contingent.
Rasmussen has Fred up 28%-19% over Rooty Toot. Fred is doing exactly what conservatives expect him to be doing. Knocking off that liberal gun grabbing, abortionist scum.
The unified allegations by Gulliani, Romney, and the Dhiminicrats against Fred are telling.
I am most amused by the incessant moaning of George “Amnesty & Gun Control” Will and the other smug Republican machine insiders who detest Fred.
They had the same moaning in favor of Bush I about Reagan (he’s lazy, he’s too old, just an actor, etc).
‘I guess Gail is competing with Maueen Dowd for nastiest female pundit on the block.’
Did she get dumped by Douglas, very publicly, too?
Just askin....
Ah yes, Gail Collins is a real fresh faced peach herself isn’t she? And her “opinions” are incredibly insightful too. It takes a lot of hard work to distinguish yourself and not rehash something that has been written at least 50 times before.
Touche’
She might pick up a drunken pipefitter at closing time....
