LAKELAND | It's not the big sit-down dinner and speech at the Yacht Club that local Republican Party planners had hoped for, but the former U.S. senator from Tennessee and now presidential candidate, Fred Thompson, will be in Lakeland at 11 a.m. Saturday to speak to those attending a gun show at The Lakeland Center.
Supporters said they hope he will return for a longer visit later in the campaign. But for now, Thompson, who is seeking the Republican nomination for president, is on a three-day, whirlwind tour of the state beginning today and ending Saturday...
Thompson will be met at The Lakeland Center by state Sen. Paula Dockery, R-Lakeland, who has endorsed his candidacy and is recruiting other elected Republicans to do the same.
The Thompson campaign trip will cover stops in Jacksonville, The Villages, Celebration, Miami, Cape Coral and New Port Richey today and Friday.
Saturday, his first stop will be The Lakeland Center, followed by an appearance at the University of Florida football game in Gainesville.
Despite the fact that it will the Florida-Tennessee game, Thompson will have a host of Florida supporters to greet him there, including state Rep. Seth McKeel, R-Lakeland, who has endorsed Thompson's campaign.

Stumping at the local gun show?
I’m really starting to like this fellow.
The Lakeland Show is a big one.
In a related story, the Democratic candidates will campaign at welfare offices and abortion clinics. Gotta play to your base, you know.
He is real.
LOL! This will get my son interested in politics.
Are the laws such in Florida that a resident with a CCW permit can carry in this Lakeland Center. Or is this considered a government building and one of the places that a ban exists?
Is there any reason that going to a gun show changes the scope of carrying?
I used to be able to go to packing.org for answers but they’re gone now.
Maybe Romney will show up and git hisself one of those “assault rifles” to go along with his shiny new lifetime NRA membership.
Is it downtown? I go to Lakeland once every year or two...
Huntington Hills Country Club...
They usually don’t check, anywhere, except the courthouse and the tax collectors office. Unconcealed stuff will get a tie wrap through the action, just to keep some damn fool from loading it. I don’t know what the plan is this time. Fred will be in very friendly territory, but the nut jobs are everywhere.
not all Gun Owners are for Fred, I got guns, and I don’t care much for Fred.
I hope Fred can make it to Del Boca Vista, Phase II!
“not all Gun Owners are for Fred, I got guns, and I dont care much for Fred.”
But at least in your case I think it is because you support someone that you think is to the right of Fred, not because you support someone that is to the left of him, right?
smart move!!!! Fred!!!
When Fred visited New Hampshire in June, his first stop was at a gun shop.
You can’t carry at a gun show in Florida. At the gun shows in Florida I have gone to, you’re asked to check you gun at the door.
