Bush orders gradual troop cuts in Iraq

President Bush, defending an unpopular war, ordered gradual reductions in U.S. forces in Iraq on Thursday night and said, "The more successful we are, the more American troops can return home." Still, Bush firmly rejected calls to end the war, saying the insurgents who threaten Iraq's future are a danger to U.S. national security. American troops must stay in the battle, Bush said, and more than 130,000 will remain after the newly ordered withdrawals are completed in July.

"The principle guiding my decisions on troop levels in Iraq is: return on success," the president said.

Does anyone remember how the President described the 1,500/month that have been killed since January? Does that number represent AQ or AQ and other groups?

You know how transparent the Democrat cowards are? Reed is a West Point graduate and a former Army officer. They had to go to a back bencher to get someone with those credentials. All the front row are Kerry, Murtha, Teddy, Dingy Harry and Durbin.

They had to use RI’s Jack Reed to get even a shred of credibility.

And what happened? Reed showed he has no credibility; he touted himself as an ex-Army officer (from the VN days, I presume) and he showed the world that he doesn’t understand his constitutional role as a senator. He can fund or defund, but that is all he can do. He cannot change foreign policy. He really made a clymer of himself.

Well Reed came away looking like a skittish loser, the President looking like a champ.

and a 2008 presidential candidate.

Maybe the Sidebar Moderator will take note ..of what the Great Fred said.

“I believe that the troop withdrawal plan that General (David) Petraeus has proposed is the right course. This recommendation is a result of the success being seen on the ground in Iraq. ... Every day, our troops in Iraq demonstrate a heroic resolve to win. I wish Democrats in Washington would dedicate as much time and energy to winning as they do on how to surrender the fight.” — Former Sen. Fred Thompson, R-Tenn., and a 2008 presidential candidate.

So I just heard John Edwards on LKL, say Bush says that "9/11 is directly related to Iraq...9/11 is not related to Iraq and the American people now know that, but they continue to say it. The President said it again tonight".

"They continue to talk about fear, they continue to focus on the connection between the war in Iraq and what happened on Sept 11th. THERE IS NO CONNECTION".

"There is a SERIOUS threat of Islamic terrorism. There's no doubt about that."

Edwards says he will go after them where ever they are..

Humm?..Him and what Army?!..

I agree 100%. This was an excellent speech. No grating sing-song cadence. No overblown rhetoric. Just George W at his Harry Truman best. I, too, have been very disappointed with him — largely because of his obdurate, destructive insistence on turning our country over to illegal aliens. But tonight, he re-emerged as a great wartime leader. Thank God.

Yahoo news is the worst most slanted. It’s my home page. Sigh. You can’t escape it.

At any rate I took thing away from this outstanding speech - the look that the President gave before the two or three sentences about the shia and iran. Whoa. He narrowed his eyes like an animal. Replay it. I recorded that speech and the after comments on MSNBC for my sons to watch when they are older. They need to see what fools look like when their lips are moving.

Last month terrorism was a bumper sticker to John Edwards. It is serious mental illness to have that kind of dissociation with oneself.

Just George W at his Harry Truman best

Forget the Harry Truman bit

Harry and his bungling State Dept caused the Korean war then didn't know how to end it

His popularity was so low because of it he decided not to run in 52

He also refused to clean out all the commies in government
