If nobody has their picture taken standing outside in the wind and rain, there is no storm.

I remember a time when we were lucky to get two days warning, That's two days more than Galveston got in 1900.

I was a bit busy yesterday. Had a trip to Madison for a rather interesting Center Right Coalition meeting, then some packing for a move in 2 weekends (the house I'm in now turned out to be just too small and noisy).
I didn't even hear about Humberto until this morning since I didn't turn on TWC or the rest of the alphabet soup yesterday.

Yeah, I know and still don’t understand how they got caught so unaware. The old timers were far better at watching the sky than we are. Maybe the smart ones had enough sense not to live directly on the water.

Maybe the smart ones had enough sense not to live directly on the water. As I remember from the film in modern Galveston, the storm surge covered virtually all of the inhabited part of the island.

Yeah, I know and still dont understand how they got caught so unaware. The old timers were far better at watching the sky than we are. Maybe the smart ones had enough sense not to live directly on the water. Well that is a story in and of itself. There have been many discussions over how the US Weather Bureau and local officials dropped the ball. The hurricane hit around Cuba and the US Weather Bureau thought it would curve back into the Atlantic. Cuban weather officials thought that it would head into the Gulf (which it did). The most controversial figure was Isaac Cline, the US Weather Bureau official in Galveston. He was extremely doubtful that a hurricane could ever hit Galveston. His actions around that time are the source of many controversies. Whether he was a hero who did all that he could or an inept official is still a source of much debate.

Well, it looks like us east coast people will be the ones that need to keep our eyes open.
I’m getting that feeling that it will go north into the deep Atlantic and die in the colder waters.

And all we can really do is speculate on the who could have, should have, etc. The late 1800s and early 1900s were not kind to Texas ports with the demise of Indianola, St. Marys, even a hard hit on Corpus. Must have been the global warming from cows and horses back then that caused the run.

I think this will be a slow moving thread until next week some time.

I think the head of the weather service was asleep at the wheel and then made excuses.....How could you live with yourself?

I don’t expect a landfall; it seems to already be showing some movement to ward the north.
