I guess I don’t understand the connection of the diocese to Creighton. I thought Creighton was run by an order, in this case the Jesuits. I can certainly understand questioning how Catholic they seem to be, but other than that isn’t the Diocese just another outside observer?

I believe a religious order has to have some permission from the local ordinary to operate in his diocese. They can’t just march in and set up shop. Hence the diocese does have the power to put some pressure on them, and it looks like it did so in this case.

There are many very orthodox Jesuits (such as Fr.Fessio), btw. I don’t know how they survive, because they are under attack within their own order. In any case, it looks as though the Jesuits at Creighton, like most of those who run colleges, need a little questioning about how Catholic they are.
