Hispanics get a helping hand

Operations such as Denver Harbor Clinic helping Hispanics Raquel Rangel, 30, has five children, no job and no health insurance.

But with the help of a community health clinic in her Denver Harbor neighborhood, she hopes to enroll in Medicaid. For now, she can't even afford the modest co-pay the clinic collects to defray costs of treating clients without insurance.

''I don't have the money, but they are trying to help me find out if my Medicaid is being processed," said Rangel, a native Houstonian who brought two of her children with fevers to the clinic. ''Instead of turning me away, they are helping me."

One large exception are U.S.-born children of illegal immigrants, who can receive Medicaid and other benefits at birth.

Montez said there are many Hispanics in Denver Harbor who could qualify for Medicaid insurance, but there are numerous obstacles including a lack of transportation, language barriers and old-fashioned pride.

Hmmm and my 25 year old son with no health insurance went to the emergency room with an asthma attack and they told him since he didn't have insurane the hospital would only charge him $200. This happened when his inhaler ran out and the Dr was supposed to refil it but didn't get to it before the weekend when the attack occured. Well he got the bill and it was $1,000. Just to give him immediate bronchial relief and an inhaler.

Of course since he's a white American citizen he will have to pay in full. He should have told him his name was Jose Cruz and that he had no ID on him as he was illegal and was afraid of being deported. Then he would have received free treatment and been assured that the authorities had no right to know he was ever there.

They input you into the system as 000-00-0000. That is the number for illegals.
The hospital never bothers you again because the government pays for it.

The law needs to be changed.

BOTH parents must be citizens to receive ANY social service benefits. A child being born here should NOT entitle them to these benefits if the parent or parents are ILLEGAL.

She can still be an illegal alien with American born children (anchor babies).......which would qualify the children for medicaid. Afterall, she was at the clinic with sick children.

And if you ever do get it, if you have any interest in a home, you will have to sign it over. That is a federal requirement! This only benefits those who have nothing to lose. Like Illegal aliens.

I may be wrong but as far as I know natives of Houston are US citizens.

The Demoncrats will make sure they know of what’s for “free” courtesty of you tax dollars. But the article (see above, third paragraph) states that she is a Native Houstonian which means that she was born in Houston. Perhaps her parents were illegals but she is not.

That is according to the article. But we all know how well the MSM checks their facts these days.

We ALL have some responsibility in allowing our country to become a welfare state. The socialist war on poverty is far more of a “quagmire” and “civil war” and “lost” than Iraq. We need to teach people how to fish rather than giving them the fish.

There are many threads on this forum and bills in the House and Senate of the United States that clarify this misinterpretation.

The citizens of other nations do not have the right to break into our country and then assert that we must accept their offspring as "us".

“Native of Houston” means born there. Maybe the author is wrong, but the article specifically says she is a native of Houston. There are many Hispanics in Texas that have been here for generations. I wish people would understand that not every Hispanic is illegal. There are many here at FR that assume anyone with a Hispanic name is an illegal that has spent their entire life on public assistance.

I have spent hours reading the names of the original land grantees of Tejas. The Spanish were very careful in their census. They have not just been there for generations but for centuries. And I am also aware that many, like Seguin, were willing and happy to rid themselves of the rule of despots like Santa Anna.

But that's not what we were talking about or what was implied: that IF the woman was in the country illegallly, her children born on our soil are citizens of the United States.

That is simply not true, no matter how fervently the Mexican government would like it to be.

I thought she was. Why else would this be a story? A clinic is helping citizens. Ummmmm, OK. Some citizen patrons are Hispanic? OK, not sure why that needed to be pointed out, but OK. That’s the story?

It’s real simple, the media wants to bring this story down to one of a community, nay, a culture within our midst all bound by the language of which they are so proud that only mean-spirited despots would deny them the exclusive use of it and award them the very same benefits that any other resident would qualify for.

It is necessary to unify all legal and illegal hispanics alike to increase their power against the evil oppressors and, if the authors of these sob stories are clever enough the rest of the American public can be made to feel compassion and kinship with the whole group.

A key element of this category of journalism is that each story must introduce a person in need at the front end; describe her plight and then make impassioned arguments that the need extends to all such as she but we can complete this journey if our first step leads in her direction.

They are searching for the perfect poster child icon, one so obviously desperate for society’s assistance and so charismatic in her own right as to evoke tears and a wrenching of wallets at her very appearance.

After that, it’s all coattails to the promised land of paradise on earth.

Section 1

All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.

If the House and Senate wish to clarify this amendment to the Constitution let them have at it, they have a tall hurdle to climb.

The Supreme Court will also have to find a way to slip around some pretty clear language as well.

We may not like it but that is the Constitution as it exists today.

Okaaay...what is the point of this story. A clinic helping Americans...so? There are clinics in every town, every city that see sick, uninsured kids. I’ve used one in the past **when my H and I were BOTH working** for GYN care, for the kids’ shots. We had no insurance through either job.

Yeah, mom has 5 kids. Maybe she IS married. Maybe dad walked out last year and she’s struggling to keep the family together. Maybe dad got laid off or lost his job and is trying to find another. At least she’s not letting them go sick and untended. Maybe she DOES work but has no insurance. There are a lot out here in that position. Not everyone has $65 per kid for an office visit at any given time.

And not everyone in difficult circumstances is a lazy, unemployed welfare-seeking person.
