Veterans Disarmament Bill Could Come Before The Senate At Any Time
-- GOA provides Senators with several pro-gun amendments

"Our chains are forged! Their clanking may be heard on the plains of Boston!" -- Patrick Henry, in his "Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death" speech of March 23, 1775

The Senate could bring up the Veterans Disarmament Bill at any time, as a result of its passage in the Judiciary Committee a few weeks ago. The bill -- introduced by F-rated Rep. Carolyn McCarthy and Sen. Patrick Leahy -- is ready to come to the floor.

Gun Owners of America delivered draft amendments to every Senate office yesterday, providing important changes that must be made to the bill. Among others, the most important amendment would make it clear that veterans suffering from PTSD are NOT prohibited persons, and thus, are not to be denied the ability to purchase a firearm simply because of emotional problems resulting from their service to this country.

The Military Order of the Purple Heart is opposed to the McCarthy-Leahy bill, having stated on June 18 of this year, that "For the first time the legislation, if enacted, would statutorily impose a lifetime gun ban on battle-scarred veterans."

Military veterans are justifiably concerned that this bill will legitimize the very thing that President Clinton did over seven years ago, when his administration added 83,000 names of veterans -- suffering from maladies such as PTSD -- into the NICS background check system.

Proponents of the bill argue that this...

So was the Lautenberg Amendment to the VAWA.

Veterans make liberals nervous because we actually know how to use weapons. Also liberals have this repressed guilt thing about living on the blood and sweat of others.

This is really bad. As an active duty military officer I will tell you we are working hard to get soldiers who may be suffering from PTSD to admit it and get treatment. When do-gooders come up with bills like this it hurts our efforts. This kind of thing will keep veterans from admitting they have a problem and seeking help. And then of course these same Senators will call us to testify on Capital Hill and grill us on why we are treating PTSD soldiers as if they were criminals. WE are not, THESE SENATORS are.

Who will your support come from? Men with nothing more than accusations of domestic violence against them (restraining orders) are imprisoned for at least five years, if they’re caught in possession of firearms or ammunition. Republicans, along with Democrats, overwhelmingly voted in favor of that. You all voted in favor of your so-called “law and order” candidates and wanted the legal environment that we now have.

HR 2640, a/k/a the Veterans Disarmament Act, is apparently on its way to the President’s desk. Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) got his congressional opposition to “compromise” on it the other day, according to a GOA alert I received this am.

I believe the NRA has lost its moral compass in supporting this legislation. The bill will statutorily bar over 140,000 law-abiding veterans from possessing firearms.

This Congress, led by the Democrats, have apparently decided the 2nd Amendment doesn’t count. If our President signs it into law, it will, in my opinion, be another nail in our Constitution and Bill of Rights.

I fear for what they are doing to this Nation and the principles upon which it was founded.

And one other thing.. this passed the Senate and the House without a recorded vote.. passed by unanimous consent. That is a travesty, IMHO.
