Cleland quits board of Murtha-linked charity
Johnstown Tribune-Democrat ^ | September 18, 2007 | Randy Griffith

Posted on 09/19/2007 9:40:00 AM PDT by jazusamo

Former U.S. Sen. Max Cleland, D-Ga., has withdrawn from the board of directors of a beleaguered Johnstown-based charity founded by a former top aide of Rep. John Murtha.

Cleland, a triple amputee and Vietnam veteran, said he has stepped down from the board of the Pennsylvania Association for Individuals with Disabilities.

“I’m not associated with PAID,” Cleland said Tuesday. “I am not interested in pursuing that relationship at all.”

Murtha spokesman Matthew Mazonkey said Murtha would not comment on the situation.

The news comes barely a month after Cleland and Carmen V. Scialabba, PAID founder and a former Murtha aide, announced Cleland was joining the board.

“Max Cleland will provide the continued leadership for the PAID family so we can extend our mission to those who normally would not have the opportunity to do so,” Scialabba said in the Aug. 2 news release.

Cleland acknowledged his change of heart came during an investigation by the Capitol Hill newspaper Roll Call. The paper was looking into PAID’s limited achievements and close ties to Murtha, local defense contractors and others benefiting from congressional earmarks.

“I don’t really know much about it,” Cleland said. “Once I learned more about the organization, I just decided it was not for me. And I really don’t have time to do that.”

Roll Call found that PAID received Murtha-backed government contracts as recently as 2003 and works with other companies Murtha has funded.

I agree with your statement, Cleland is running for the hills. I think he probably knows something that hasn’t come out yet due to his involvement, if only temporarily, that set off alarm bells.

That said....the fact he joined an organization WITHOUT CHECKING IT OUT FIRST goes a long way to explaining his voting record before he was fired by voters.

Agreed...This is a little surprising because Cleland went to a rally in Johnstown last year to support Murtha’s reelection. Murtha’s been getting quite a bit of heat recently and this is his hometown newspaper.

A bit of late, but welcome, news.

When Carmen Scialabba is involved and Murtha supports it you can bet that it is real nasty.

I have never been happier than the night Max Cleland got fired as my Senator from Georgia. He is a sex pervert and used state funds as SEc. of the State of Georgia to pay for his sexcapades, and used state equiptment to asist him in his sexual conquests. He is a sicko P.O.S., so Murtha’s group must really suck!

Murtha doesn’t know the definition of “heat”...

HEAT will be focused on his corrupt ass, if Gen. Mattis clears just another few Marines who had been publicly charged by Murtha as being “coldblooded murderers who intentionly and with premeditation killed INNOCENT civilians”.....

HEAT is what the former Marines in this country can bring to the situation..
Marines still serving - are forbidden from getting “political” or attacking their President or Congress.

Murtha has disgraced himself — repeatedly with a long record of doing so easily and without consequence..

Consequences MUST be brought to bear soon.

‘I have never been happier than the night Max Cleland got fired as my Senator from Georgia. ‘

I did enjoy that from afar, being in Ohio. He’s a blowhard that blew himself up, isn’t he?

I’m still not sure which was more enjoyable to watch, Kerry losing to Bush, or Daschle losing to Thune...

Speaking of Cleland, anyone know of any updates on his recently fired and former cheif of staff that was found half naked, drug out, and burglarizing a John Edwards campaign event and military base all while driving around in a stolen car? His name is Michael Duga.

That is not true. He would once in a while lend a hand. The problem was when work needed to be done he often just sat around watching others do it.

Does anyone see the irony in a Murtha organization involving government funds and defense contractors being named “PAID”????

Is Murtha that dumb or is his contempt for the public so great that he thinks the public is so dumb he can stick it in their face and they won’t make a connection?

Yep, I believe there are many who see the irony of it.

I don’t think so much it’s that he’s dumb though he’s never been the brightest bulb in the fixture, remember ABSCAM. Over the years I believe he’s become so brazen because his constituents kept voting him in due to the pork he brings home.

The difference now is senality is starting to set in, IMO. Every time he talks to the media he repeats the same rhetoric and rambles on, he doesn’t realize that people are laughing at him behind his back and/or he doesn’t care.
