Fewer window prostitutes in Amsterdam

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands - A non-profit corporation has purchased a large number of the buildings where prostitutes pose in windows in Amsterdam's Red Light district, the city said Thursday, in a deal that may lead to a third of the windows being shuttered.

The move is intended to break a logjam in an multi-year effort by the city to cut back on the windows, which it says are a magnet for crime and money laundering.

Mayor Job Cohen said the move was not intended to get rid of prostitution entirely, since it is part of the area's history and a major tourist draw for the city.

"What we do want is to get rid of the underlying criminality," Cohen told local television station AT5.

In Thursday's deal, public housing corporation NV Stadsgoed purchased 18 buildings with 51 windows for $35 million. That is around a third of the windows in the Red Light District, though there are other prostitution zones in the city.

NV Stadsgoed will redevelop some or all of the buildings, and because they are not likely to be worth as much as housing or regular commercial real estate, the city has agreed to reimburse the corporation by up to $21 million.

"We don't know yet what's going to come in their place," Cohen said. "We're very busy making a development plan, and we hope to have that ready by the end of the year."

Amsterdam has been conducting a crackdown on criminality in the city center for nearly five years, using a 2002 law that forces business operators to disclose detailed accounting in order to have their licenses renewed.

The seller in Thursday's deal, "Fat" Charlie Geerts, was ordered by the city last year to close the windows because the city said he failed to meet standards.

But he filed a legal protest and Amsterdam's District Court granted an injunction against closures while he fought the decision.

With its scantily clad prostitutes posing in brothel windows and coffee shops oozing the pungent aroma of cannabis smoke, the Red Light district's seediness has always been part of its attraction.

Prostitution is legal in the Netherlands, and coffee shops are licensed to sell small amounts of marijuana. But the district is a magnet for petty criminals and, authorities believe, human traffickers, drug lords and mobsters — who take advantage of the situation to launder money.

Prostitutes' rights organizations have generally been indifferent to the crackdown, arguing that pimps are the main source of problems, not landlords.

They have all moved to Nevada, the home of Sen. Harry “Mr. Ethics” Reid and his family of lobbyists.

Maybe we should rename him as “Redlight Reid”.

Wait a minute! I’ve got an idea.

Why don’t they legalize all the victimless crime?

money laundering? What, someone wanting to launder dirty money gives a $100 to a prostitute and gets clean change?

My, the criminal mind is always working.

I take it Mayor Cohen’s plan is to take prostitution out of the red-light district and put it in the city-council chambers...where it belongs...

But, but, everyone's always telling me that legalizing 'victimless crime' would mean that there's less crime!

That area used to be a tourist attraction, maybe still is. Every time I was in Amsterdam long enough someone wanted to take me through there. When the “tourist” group included women some of the pros came out and hollered and gestured at them. After a couple of times I figured I’d seen everything. They certainly had a large variety on display. The only category missing was “attractive.” Maybe I was there on off nights.

The deputy mayor of Amsterdam is Muslim. Cohn is a beard and a supplicant to the Muslims. The tourist city center is surrounded by muslim neighborhoods. The most popular new male baby’s name is Mohammed. Rotterdam is majority Muslim. Notince Cohn is going after Muslims who have a wife and kids, collects on them, sends them back to muslimstan, and bring over a new girl to bread new muslims. Usually this guy is un employed. Supposedly. Security is provided by Hells Angels. The police are worthless, unless you are white, or are having a permitted assembly, in which case they will let you be assaulted by anarchists and then arrest you. If you protest Islam, you will not be given a permit or if you are given one you will also be given a death warning and told you are on your own.

Why don’t they legalize all the victimless crime?

Victimless?

You mean the non-victim wives or girlfriends of the men who buy these prostitutes who end up with a disease because of their husbands' having sex with walking deathtraps? Ot the non-victim children who have to suffer through divorce because of daddy's selfish self-gratification? You mean those non-victims?

Let's ask those women and children if prostitution is a victimless crime.

The other side of that argument is that the men won't go looking for sex outside if they get it at home.

I actually agree with you.

I was making fun of the fact that they got into this fix because they thought prostitution was a victimless crime and now they are seeing that it really isn’t victimless.

Legalizing these “victimless” crimes not only hurts individuals but soon it destroys whole cultures.

Legal prostitution makes for a much more peaceful, fulfilling family life for a husband. The wife would pretty much HAVE TO make sure of that.

LOL!!

Legal prostitution makes for a much more peaceful, fulfilling family life for a husband.

Peaceful and fulfilling? If my husband ever went to a prostitute he'd be peaceful and fulfilled for all eternity lying in his beautiful coffin.

That was hilarious!!!!

If they're not getting it at home, and it's enough of an issue for them, maybe they ought to think about splitting up with whoever they're not getting it from and going single.

No man has a right to bring home what could be deadly diseases to their unsuspecting significant others.

Get a divorce, leave, separate. Go do what you have to do, but don't harm those who are never give a choice whether or not they want to participate in the behaviors that cause lifelong, uncurable STDs.

IMHO if prostitution were made legal nationwide, a great many wives that treat their husbands shabbily would take that as a wake-up call.

Or not. They could continue on as many have for years nagging, harping and cajoling. Those that have husbands with already questionable moral fibre would be the “victims” that you speak of.

Ehm, I live on the opposite site of this huge country. Also it can be dangerous for a country-boy to go out in the big city.

Actualy there is a song about a farmer who goes to Amsterdam and goes to the girls of pleasure and he turns into some kinda pimp and stays there.
