Anti-war Republican
Baltimore Sun ^ | September 23, 2007 | Paul West

Rep. Ron Paul of Texas, an old-fashioned conservative with a strong libertarian streak, inspires a small but growing base of fervent admirers with his strict interpretation of Congress' powers

No matter who shows up at this week's Republican presidential debate in Baltimore, it's a good bet the biggest applause will go to the most conservative man onstage.

He's Rep. Ron Paul, a perfect protest candidate for 2008. Trained as a physician, he's "Dr. Paul" to a small but growing base of fervent admirers - more than a few of whom could fairly be called zealots.

Around the Capitol, the Texas congressman is "Dr. No," for his frequent, and often lonely, insistence on opposing any legislation that, in his view, exceeds the authority explicitly given to Congress by the framers of the Constitution.

Now, at 72, this enemy of central government is finding overnight success in some unusual places, such as college campuses.

Yes, the Run Paul crowd is in bed with the Left on the war and the Neo-Nazis and al Qaeda on Israel.

WOW, that's quite a feat! Beneath that kind and gentlemanly exterior, Paul is an evil genius who has pulled together a conspiracy to end all conspiracies. Who knew?

Now....all he has the do to make the picture complete is to recruit the Illuminiti, 33rd degree Masons, wife beaters, vegans, tree huggers, and the rapper fans who wear those hip hugging pants.

He’d take their support if they’d give it. He’s got no scrupples about whom he takes support from.

I need some socks. Can you tell me the best place to buy socks?

Well, I pretty much have to buy mind online, and I've found Hanes www.onehanesplace.com to have quite a nice selection.

I ordered some recently and will be excited to receive my new socks.

This event may even warrant its very own thread.

(I'm NOT watching the football scores...score is too close...can't stand it....NOT gonna watch...)

Paul is a traitor and a mental case. Instead of running for POTUS he should be seeking therapy

Well, those your words and worries, not mine. I’m more concerned about his supporters who are neo-Nazis, Truthers, anti-Semites, and other morally bankrupt souls. You can worry about Masons and whatever claptrap you’re prattling on about.

He’ll be stopped. He’s a
“1 - 3%” candidate, but a real good joke for us here.

Not quite. 4 percent in the latest Gallup Poll and beat the pants off Fred at a straw poll that Fred tried to win.

Those numbers are huge. I’m sure that with a possible sampling error size of plus or minus three percent that Run Paul will be the next president.

Glad that you admitted that your numbers were wrong. Thanks for acknowleding that he has more than tripled his support since he was first included in a poll. Can anyone else say that, except perhaps Huckabee?

Ah, read my post, Captain Kangaroo. With the possibility of sampling error, who knows how low his support is. But hey, you can get excited about it. After all, if you’re for Run Paul you can’t have much concern for facts.

BTW, if you are right, why aren't these college kids supporting Kucinich?

Good point. I haven't seen any statistics, but I get the feeling the Paul kids are the computer-engineering students who tend to go through a libertarian phase at some point.

Some business and science students would go along, while humanities and social science majors won't.

So these kids are probably "on the right" or in a more conservative-libertarian camp than the usual liberal-radical student activists.

That of course is all based on nothing more than intuition, but mine is as good as anybody else's.

I'm a Houston Texans fan. They actually might have a real NFL team this year. But they're tying my stomach in knots right now...:-)

A debate confrontation with Rudolph W. Giuliani over the war gained him more publicity in "five days than in 30 years. It was unbelievable," Paul says in an interview. "It was very clear that I was a Republican who had conservative values that spoke and defended a lot of ideas that liberals had."

Different planet, see?
