Gingrich: I'll run if we raise $30 million

WASHINGTON (MCT) -- In the latest sign of how unsettled the Republican presidential race is, Newt Gingrich says he'll run if supporters come up with $30 million in three weeks.

"I don't see as a citizen how you could turn that down," Gingrich said on "Fox News Sunday."

The fiery and controversial former speaker of the House has been a polarizing public figure.

Still, he believes he can mount a White House bid just a few months before voting starts because the GOP faithful have yet to solidify behind a candidate. Rudy Giuliani remains the leader, at 30 percent in the latest Gallup Poll, just 8 percentage points ahead of already-stumbling actor Fred Thompson.

Gingrich has tasked longtime adviser Randy Evans with launching the ambitious fundraising bid next Monday, and reporting back in three weeks.

"I want the commitments first," Gingrich said. "If there is, in fact, enough people in the country who think we need this kind of approach and this kind of change-oriented policies, then I think I'd feel a responsibility to run."

Gingrich isn't the only potential candidate whose name is still in play. Sen. Chuck Hagel, R-Neb., said New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg shouldn't be written off, because the terrain remains so unsettled.

"This business is full of uncertainties," Hagel said on CNN's "Late Edition."

But when he only raises a “buck three eighty” will he return it to both of his contributors?

Facing Giuliani gets her beat.

I disagree. Throwing away the gunowner and social conservative vote is a good way to turn the purple states blue.

Boy, you could not be more wrong. When faced with two candidates whose positions on the issues are almost exactly alike ( as spoken by Rudy himself ) the voters, if they are looking to vote for a liberal, will go with the most committed liberal, which means that Hillary wins.

Sorry Newt but you’ve been kissing Hill’s @$$ since she announced and have given her odds of 80-20. You debate John (Viet-Nam) Kerry about global warming and agree with everything he says. In short, take a hike!!

I must have missed the overwhelming groundswell of support for Newt among conservatives. < / sacrasm >

Oddly enough, I like Newt. I read some of his books before he was elected to Congress, and he makes a great deal of sense.

But he is not presidential material. Even among that crowd, his ego is too big. Or, more accurately, Newt is not good enough at hiding his ego. They all have giant egos or they wouldn't be running.

Newt, Newt, Newt. Newt is a lot like Winston Churchill. He is a visionary, a shrewd political schemer, a man willing to stake out a position and not only defend it, but able to stiffen the resolve of wavering friends, and even win political opponents to it, a man who has a vision for not just winning the next election, but for preserving our civilization ... and a blowhard so egotistical that all the other politicians notice, a man who is just as willing to stand up for his vainity as he is for principle, and man who can be oblivious to reality.

But for Adolf Hitler, Winston Churchill would be remembered as his father's son. An immensely talented politician, who got further than Lord Randolf, but whose monumental ego, and knack for making enemies, destroyed his political career, and left him a bitter, back bench crank. Hitler saved Churchill by giving him something to rail about that was actually worthy of his melodramatics.

So far, thank God, Newt doesn't have a Hitler to create a crisis that so shakes the Republic that we turn to him for leadership. I hope he never gets one, but Ahmadinejad, and Harry Reid, are both doing their best.

Newt can’t win the nomination, much less the election, but he might throw the nomination to Rudy. I wonder if that’s what he wants to do.
