Transgender community works to gain protections in South Florida (Protected Class Alert)
Sun Sentinel ^ | 9/24/07 | Patty Pensa

Transgender is quietly becoming a protected class in South Florida as cities vote to prohibit discrimination against a group that faces tremendous challenges fitting in.

Palm Beach and Broward counties may extend the protection next, which could leave the broadest imprint by affording civil rights to people for their gender identity or expression. The movement accelerated with the March firing of Largo City Manager Susan Stanton, who transitioned from male to female this year.

"It shined a light on what this discrimination is," said Shannon Minter, legal director for the National Center for Lesbian Rights and Stanton's attorney. "It really underscored how important it is to have these ordinances."

Protected “bad” behavior rather- they aren’t a class; there isn’t one requirement that makes them so:

1) Gayness can be changed (back to normalcy-and thank God, with His help it can be)

2) They aren’t oppressed (they have the same rights as everone else, and in today’s strange society more so than most American actually),

3) Their behavior SHOULD be oppressed historically because it is wrong, unnatural and weird (as in against nature and God, and a small miniority againt the traditions that make society well).

I would hire a transgendered person if he/she/it was the right person for the job. I would require him/her/it to dress appropriately for his/her/its physical gender (and go to the proper restroom) until he/she/it had been completely 'reassigned'.

I also would make sure that any insurance I provided to my employees would not pay for any treatments related to 'gender reassignment.'

You’re right, it’s behavior, and whether it is bad or not doesn’t matter. It is behavior, and as such shouldn’t be afforded any special rights or privileges.

What other behaviors are out there that need special rights? What’s next, nose-pickers and those given to public flatulence? How long will they have to endure intolerance and discrimination just because they have a little extra gas in the alimentary canal?

a group that faces tremendous challenges fitting in.

For the life of me, I can't imagine WHY ...

"It shined a light on what this discrimination is,"

Justifiable.

"Discrimination" is a word that has earned an unduly ill reputation. Sometimes it is a LACK of discrimination that marks a pathology. As it does in this case ...

That’ll be ok, unless you start invading other employees’ cubicles.

I can concur about hiring a transgender as long as they did their job and didnt push their psychosis as a political statement.

It still perplexes me that some male can go get castrated and become a female........I just dont buy it, equally the other way around.

City Manager Susan Stanton, who transitioned from male to female this year.

Whatever happened to that perfectly good English word "freak"?

That's perfectly acceptable. As long as you're Napoleon.

One of my coworkers changed gender, surgery and all. She came back and we all had an adjustment period.
The company had diversity day, and the GLBT society had 2 speakers. The Black Engineering society had 1 speaker.
One of my coworkers, a black single mother, argued about this with the transgendered individual.
The African American’s summary: There is a lot that needs to be done for 200 years or racism.
Transgender: And the needs of my group have barely begun to be recognized. You’ve had 50 years of civil rights; we haven’t had 5.
African american: There is still systemic bias against blacks, whether low expectations in schools or expectations of crime. Hence we need more speakers and awareness, not less. And you don’t know what it is like to be a minority!
Transgender: There are a lot more people who look like you who look like me.
Next round of layoffs, guess which one isn’t here anymore?

I wouldn’t hire a freakazoid any more than I’d hire a practicing alcoholic. Self destruction usually harms more than the practitioner.

The biggest problem I have with transvestites is that their shoes never match their purse. If one does want to go out in public like that then they should properly accessorize themselves.

Knowing the compassion of so many FReepers, I propose we start a fund to pay all expenses for these unfortunate souls to relocate to Iran. There are no homosexuals in Iran, and surely that country is the poorer for it. We could do this good deed for all concerned and it would be a win-win situation.

How about drinkers; afterall I know a lot of American have a problems with that (not that causal drinking is wrong) but for this example- Why not get rid of AAA? Afterall they must have been abused as Children, so their drunkeness is OK, too?
