Looks like Fred hit the target with his remarks at the NRA convention. This from a Giuliani blogger:

Thompson: The Only Difference Between NYC and SC is "Geography"

Showing off his amazing handle on the nuances of public policy, Fred Thompson declared at an NRA speech that the only difference between New York City and South Carolina is geography. From The New York Post's Charles Hurt.

One argument Giuliani makes is that different gun laws are needed for New York City than, say, South Carolina.

Thompson shot that down, saying, "My philosophy does not depend upon my geography."

The first question Thompson got from the audience after the speech was whether gun rights should be different in New York than elsewhere.

"Nope," he answered.

After the applause died down, he added, "It's more than coincidental that so many places that have such crime rates have the toughest gun restrictions in America."

Beware, voters, Fred Thompson is a zealot. He seems to actually be one of those people who thinks if everyone was packing a concealed weapon there would be no crime. New York City is the safest big city in America and Rudy Giuliani made it that way. Fred Thompson has never reduced crime anywhere. Not in South Carolina, not in New York City. He has never done it. He does not understand how to do it. Fred Thompson should enjoy attacking Rudy's crime fighting record while he's skipping debates. Let's see him try to pull that when he's sharing the stage with America's Mayor.

Enough

In the Comments to this post last Friday, Reader Fast Eddie made this astute observation about the Stupid Party and its supporters:

The Stupid Party, on the other hand, nominates a purist who then can’t draw any of the moderate crowd. Or, failing to nominate the perfect conservative, they stay home to demonstrate their displeasure.
And that’s the troof.

I’d like to suggest a radical thought to conservatives in this country, when it comes time to select our representatives: There’s no such thing as a perfect candidate.

Instead, I’d like to put forward a radical concept, that of: “Enough.”

In other words, we’re never going to find a candidate who is religious enough, who supports gun ownership enough, who can stand up to the U.N. enough, who lowers taxes enough, and so on, with sufficient passion to satisfy Evangelical Christians, the gun dorks at RKBA, the isolationists, and the “no-taxes-at all” supporters, respectively.

And frankly, I’m not sure that we’d be comfortable with such a candidate, either. I certainly wouldn’t.

What we need to find in the primaries is a Stupid Party candidate who is religious “enough” for most conservatives; against high taxes “enough” to satisfy, say, the Heritage Foundation; hostile “enough” to Big Government, and pro-gun ownership “enough” to satisfy, say, me (this may come as a shock to the GFW Set, but I’m actually a moderate on the topic of the Second Amendment).

If we look at the current crop of Stupid Party front-runners, Giuliani fails on several issues, and makes the grade only on law-and-order and foreign policy; McCain fails dismally on most, scoring high only on the War On Terrorist Bastards; Romney fails on just about every point; and Thompson scores reasonably well in almost every area. (I’m leaving off the minor candidates, because they’re unelectable.)

I’m not saying this because I’m a Fred supporter: I’m a Fred supporter because he satisfies most of the criteria I want to see in a candidate. Is he the perfect candidate? No. Duncan Hunter is my perfect candidate—but Hunter is, sadly, unelectable, and I want to see a Republican President-elect in 2008, and not a socialist one.

And that’s just for the primaries.

I can say all this with confidence, knowing that the Evil Party is going to nominate what for them is a “centrist”, but whose embodiment is Hillary Clinton: a godless, tax-’em-till-they-bleed, gun-hating, U.N.-worshipping, Big Government Nanny socialist. The other Evil Party candidates are even worse than she is.

All we conservatives have to do, as Fast Eddie reminds us, is to find an acceptable candidate, and not be blinded by ideological purity.

Top story...

...from americasmayor2008.blogspot.com... gee, I wonder who he’s supporting.

That was perhaps one of the most nonsensical arguments against Sen. Thompson yet.

“Beware, voters, Fred Thompson is a zealot. He seems to actually be one of those people who thinks if everyone was packing a concealed weapon there would be no crime. “

Hilarious desperate straw-man rhetoric that sounds like a Democrat!

Of course, Fred does seem to believe that where law-abiding people are not denied the right to carry a pistol, that crime is substantially lower.

Has anyone made sense of the Hunter zealots’ latest attack of “Thompson said it, but Hunter said it first”? I mean, not only is it juvenile, but doesn’t it imply that Thompson and Hunter are much, much closer on the issues than they pretend?

And then, to follow that up, why should we then abandon the guy who’s actually made headway to support Mr. 1%?

“the only difference between New York City and South Carolina is geography.”

That statement really chaps my hide.

I think their latest meme is Fred doesn’t have any core principles of his own. He’s “stealing” ideas from other candidates. We all know how lazy he is...

Unlike Hillary, who is not polarizing in any way.

The Corrupt Party has a different set of issues than the Stupid Party does.

...He seems to actually be one of those people who thinks if everyone was packing a concealed weapon there would be no make that "appreciably less" crime......

I lived in NYC, and trust me, I'd rather be caught with my weapon than without it. Never had to pull the pocket piece, but racking the trusty 12-gauge had a remarkable effect on the sbs in my hall, and the arresting officers whio actually showed up to arrest the perps emitted nary a peep.

Rootie's administration absolutely lowered crime in NYC and got public safety to a very acceptable level, (for NYC). But, the Police Chief who pulled off the miracle made one mistake: he got more and better headlines than Rootie. He had to go. Fortunately his policies continued. Rootie deserves a lot of credit for the policy, it's a serious character defect that he demanded all of it.

Pollster Zogby's laughs off Fred Thompson's chances

Posted by David Postman at 10:03 AM

Pollster John Zogby went through his quick take on the leading presidential candidates during his talk last week at the Association of Washington Business conference. I wasn't able to post on it at the time, but I was particularly struck by his dismissal of Fred Thompson as a serious contender for the GOP nomination. As he made his way though the pros and cons of each candidate, Zogby said:

Fred Thompson. This will not take long. I don't see it. I don't see it, I've never seen it. He's finally announced. He's received a bounce in the polls.

Pros: He has an impressive resume. He comes from a good state. He's very tall. You'll recall that John Kerry was very tall as well. He also has some leading Bush consultants working for him.

Cons: You know, I love it when these guys go out there and compare themselves to Ronald Reagan. ... Don't even bother comparing yourself. Ronald Reagan alive was not even Ronald Reagan today. ... You lose in comparison. Don't go down that road unless you can really match the real thing. And Fred Thompson is not the real thing.

I'm sorry if there any Thompson buttons out there. It is a very dull campaign speech. He has given little reason for running. He wants a small government. Yeah. Who's the big government candidate in the primaries? You know? He's fallen short on fundraising. Watch for the Freddie Fizzle.

Let me just tell you on a very personal note. If he should go places in this campaign, I want his job on Law and Order because for 12 seconds a week I get to open a door and say: 'I think you're going to have to find more evidence Jack. That's how the system works.'

It was not a bad imitation of Thompson as Arthur Branch.
Now, if Fred Thompson is elected president, this was only for entertainment purposes.

The Zogby brothers are Arabs & democrats, so a Fred Thompson in the White House naturally doesn’t sit well with them. I believe they’re pushing a Hillary versus Rudy matchup, ‘natch.

I note that the very first Pro in Zogby’s list is that Fred has an impressive resume.

As opposed to the Hunter supporters and Romney supporters who say he’s done nothing. Or what has he done? Or, that doesn’t count. Nice to see some acknowledgement of that, even if it is from someone who doesn’t support Fred.

So many things that are said about Fred are opposites, so they all can’t figure out what the truth is.

Very wimpy from Zogby, all just DNC/detractor talking points. This says to me that Fred is doing exceptionally well and that Zogby knows it.
