Teens Held Without Bond in Girl's Slaying
Carthage — Tight security surrounds three teens charged with killing a 12-year-old girl in her Moore County home last week.
Van Roger Smith Jr., 16, Sherrod Nicholas Harrison, 19, and Michael Graham Currie, 18, all of Cameron, have been charged with first-degree murder and breaking and entering in the death of Emily Elizabeth Haddock. Emily was dead Friday in her home on Marks Road outside of Vass, authorities said.
She had stayed home from school with strep throat and was alone when someone broke into the house and, surprised to find someone inside, shot her several times with a .22-caliber handgun, authorities said. Two of the teens lived on Marks Road about six miles from the Haddock home.
Harnett County authorities located a stolen .22-caliber handgun on Monday in a car with stolen plates in the Carolina Hills area of the county. The gun had been stolen last Thursday from a home, and authorities said it might be the weapon used in the slaying. Perry Ross Schiro, 19, of Cameron, was charged with burglary, larceny and possession of stolen property in connection with the gun.
One of the three teens charged in the slaying also is considered a "person of interest" in an attempted break-in last Friday about a mile from the Haddock home, authorities said. The three teens made their first court appearance Tuesday morning and were appointed attorneys.
A bond hearing is scheduled for Wednesday in District Court, but authorities have declined to disclose the time of the hearing for security reason. The teens were being held without bond Tuesday in the Moore County Detention Center.

Are these incidents becoming more common? Drudge has another clearly racial teen beating linked on his page today. Is the racial climate deteriorating in the USA? If so, why? Times are pretty good for jobs. All races are featured prominently in the media, lots of rich black role models out there. Why the hate? Even inter-racial marraige is a common every-day occurance. I honestly think most white do not harbor hatred of blacks in their hearts at this point, either.

What started out with considerable nobility in Selma, Alabama, has been going sour ever since LBJ decided to take advantage of the movement for his own political purposes. When young people should be learning that all men are created equal ina the sight of God, instead they are learning that one race is guilty and the other is entitled. This is not a healthy thing to teach people.

IMO these perps deserve the death penalty. That being said, I do not think the evidence points to this being a killing based on race. No, it was a murder that was deemed necessary to cover up a burglery.
They didn’t want to face the penalty for burglery, so they sentenced the girl to death.
For that they should pay the ultimate price.
Don’t give me the “they were minors” defense. They were old enough to know they wouldn’t want to die. They knew better.
Put them on trial. Convict them. Excute them.

Your scenario sounds believable, but if the girl had been a 12 year old black girl would they have still killed her? I suspect that hatred of whites contributed to the utter contempt they showed for the life of this poor girl.

Once again, we need to start putting these scum away. Cops and juries don't take "non-violent" crimes seriously enough. I'd bet $100 no one dusted for prints or otherwise thoroughly investigated the attempted break-in. Impossible to say, but had they pursued that case with vigor and shaken the trees sufficiently, maybe the perps would have laid low (or possibly have been caught) and not attempted another break-in, and the girl would still be alive.
Probably correct. Unfortunately, there seem to be a lot of FReepers lately who are itching to find a racial aspect to any crime -- it almost seems like they have a "revenge" motive.

At 12, had my daughter been home alone, she would have access to several firearms, and the skill to use them properly.
It may be a shame to raise kids as warriors, but in a world full of barbarians I see no other choice.

Jack, if black crime was primarily black on white, I’d have more sympathy for your arguement. In light of what takes place all the time, I don’t doubt at all that these kids would gun down one of their own under the same circumstances.

This is obviously not a hate crime and probably would not be persecuted as such were the race of the Victim and perps reversed.
This was a robbery gone bad they did not enter to kill a while person they thought they were going into an empty home.

Sure, there are still individuals that maintain the old hatreds. But, most of us do not go looking for someone to hate, like in the KKK days.
I don’t know if it was a hate crime. It doesn’t matter. She is still dead. It was just a stupid crime, because those kids haven’t been taught any better than to take what they want, and murder to try and cover it up.
My heart goes out to the families involved, not just the girl’s family. All of these kids need a mother at home, and a father to lead the family.

I am not seeking revenge on anyone. I’m sorry if you find my posting or comments ugly. I find the situation ugly. I think there is an obvious racial component of much crime today - but it’s the issue we are not allowed to discuss without being called racist.
Again, I’m not suggesting that the killers sought out a girl of a different race to kill, but that stumbling on her I suspect it was far easier to do because of the racial divide that still exists in the USA.

I guess my final take is that I don’t like “hate crime” laws because it is immaterial. Punish the action, not the imputed thougts behind them.
Whether or not they had a racist bone in their bodies, the killers still shot this little girl. In the end, that’s all the crime that we need to make it a tragedy and to describe their punishment.
Hate crime laws divdide us, because it requries the law to get into someone’s brain. And we can’t do that, opinions and views always differ.

You are so right. It was back in the 1960’s that I was in a very racial mixed school. The black kids were told by their parents that the white kids “owed” them and would ask for money from you before you got in line to buy a snack or something. The learning of the ‘shake down” was going on way back then.
That is why the hate is there. You don’t have to do anything to get jumped and beat up. I witnessed such goings on way back then. I know better.

You misunderstand.....since any crime committed by a white on a minority can now be considered a “hate crime” (which is often done)....likewise such crimes committed by minorities on whites are “hate crimes”
Liberals tend to find reasons why apparent hate crimes are not hate crimes.
Until hate crimes laws are equally enforced, these laws are always a joke. Should we have to form a White Civil Rights movement to see equal enforcement of laws?
Well, this happened in the Raleigh/Durham area. Another crime with three alleged perpetrators and one victim (and no doubt we have victim this time), just the latest in a long history of children being victimized by adults and older teens.
I’m waiting for the Duke Gang of 88 to take out full page ads decrying the continuing victimization of children by adults, and anticipate large demonstrations and many outside activist descending upon the area. And, of course, 24/7 media coverage for at least a week or two. I’m sure CNN is blanketing their programs with the story as I type.

No doubt they are scum but they did not kill her because she was white, nor did they kill her to intimidate a group of people.
There is no need for the hate crime designation in the crime. They committed murder, pure and simple. When you are committing a crime and you kill someone simply because the only threat the represent to you is that they might identify you then it’s murder.
How on Earth have we come to the point where a crime such as that described here is not murder. I might be wrong, but in my mind it’s the kind of crime the death penalty was invented to handle.
As a matter of fact I don’t care if one of them was only 16, he took part in a heinous crime and there is absolutely no reason that he should not pay the ultimate price for it.
