The Ugly Side of the G.O.P.
New York Times ^ | September 25, 2007 | Bob Herbert

Posted on 09/25/2007 6:17:42 PM PDT by Lorianne

I applaud the thousands of people, many of them poor, who traveled from around the country to protest in Jena, La., last week. But what I’d really like to see is a million angry protesters marching on the headquarters of the National Republican Party in Washington.

Enough is enough. Last week the Republicans showed once again just how anti-black their party really is.

And in other news, NPR spiked an interview George W. Bush did with Juan Williams regarding race-issues. Go figure.

what the heck does being republican have to do with Jena???

If this was 6 white guys beaing up a black man there would be national marches and rioting AGAINST THE 6 ATTACKERS

Here they want to defend the attackers because they ‘were charged too hard’

Once again if they were white they would be CALLING For attempted murder charges.

I’ve taken your advice not to read it, but the headline begs the question, “Does the mention of a GOP bad side indicate that a Dem actually thinks the GOP has a good side?”, or was it an oversight?

Bob Herbert will be beating his racist drum until the day he dies. The President could personally call him up, ask for his advice, praise him in public, award him something like the Freedom Medal, and Herbert would probably respond with something like “F-YOU WHITEY!”

Let me recall. Orville Faubus was a Democrat when he opposed the integration of Little Rock High. George Wallace was a Democrat when he stood in the door of the University of Alabama to block integration. The south at the time the Civil Rights Bill was passed by the GOP was solid Democrat and staunch segregation. Without the support of the GOP in congress there would not have been a Civil Rights Bill. Seems that this clown chooses to ignore these facts.

These clowns are so transparent. The NY Times has a bloody nose from the Petraeus fiasco so they trot out the race issue to deflect the criticism.

Kindly allow me to add, a certain tall fellow with a stove-pipe hat who literally gave his life to free blacks from slavery. Seems he was a Republican. President Dwight D. Eisenhower, who as a general worked hard for integration of the armed forces, was the one who sent the 101st to Little Rock to enforce the integration order. A Republican.

For all the other comments about the despicable Bob Herbert, he is also a bald-faced liar.

“The radio and television personality Tavis Smiley worked for a year to have a pair of these debates televised on PBS, one for the Democratic candidates and the other for the Republicans. The Democratic debate was held in June, and all the major candidates participated.”

“The Republican debate is scheduled for Thursday. But Rudy Giuliani, John McCain, Mitt Romney and Fred Thompson have all told Mr. Smiley: “No way, baby.”

“They won’t be there. They can’t be bothered debating issues that might be of interest to black Americans. After all, they’re Republicans.”

This fool is totally transparent. When the Black caucus scheduled a debate on Fox, one of the first ones and sure to get attention, who suddenly took off? The democrats.

In 1981, during the first year of Mr. Reagan’s presidency, the late Lee Atwater gave an interview to a political science professor at Case Western Reserve University, explaining the evolution of the Southern strategy:

“You start out in 1954 by saying, ‘N---r, n---r, n---r,’ ” said Atwater. “By 1968, you can’t say ‘nigger’ — that hurts you. Backfires. So you say stuff like forced busing, states’ rights, and all that stuff. You’re getting so abstract now [that] you’re talking about cutting taxes, and all these things you’re talking about are totally economic things, and a byproduct of them is [that] blacks get hurt worse than whites.”

Damn, Atwater really said that.

If so, that is vile and disgusting.

trying to run down the pedigree of the quote and I find it strange. The "Case Western Reserve professor" is Alexander Lamis ( why didn't Herbert attribute the name?) who published a book Southern politics in the 1990's in 1998. He sat on this quote for over 15 years until long after Atwater was dead???? Furthermore, at least according to the reviews on Amazon , Lamis edited the book with several other contributors , and Lamis only wrote the first and last chapters, so since Herbert gives no details, hard to know if it was really an original interview of Lamis. (Used books available at Amazon fron $23). Herbert, per Google has shopped the quote before, several years ago. This time a CBS blogger has picked it up. Pretty hard to get the context here, since Atwater would have really been broad-brushing to link 1954 southern Political rhetoric to 1981. What is always obfuscated in discussions of the turn from D to R in southern presidential voting is the fact that the D's moved away from national security emphasis and cultural conservatism during those same years. Thus the southern whites moving away from the D's are really more like the Reagan Democrats than they are recalcitrant racists, as the leftists have been allowed to demonize them for years, most shamefully Gore on the wimp Kemp in the '92 VP debate.

As I recall Al Gore first used Willie Horton ads in the Rat Party (formerly the traditional, patriotic Democratic Party) primary. A group separate from the Bush campaign paid for the ads in the general election -- as is their right I believe, but Rats say no I guess.

Republicans improperly threw black voters off the rolls in Florida in the contested presidential election of 2000, and sent Florida state troopers into the homes of black voters to intimidate them in 2004.

Sure, Herbert is one angry liar and scumbag but he is apparently stupid as well. Why should Republicans care about "issues that concern minorities" (presumably, how to grab more "free" money, "free" stuff, and government "jobs", all paid for by government confiscation from hard-working traditional American families, ie., Republicans) when they get so few votes from minorities? When Republicans offer an olive branch (charter schools and school vouchers, for example) the branch is jerked away and turned into a spanking switch.

Blacks as a group are firmly in the pockets of their Democrat slavemasters, and they seem to be very comfortable there. Herbert is a perfect case in point. Republicans can see this as clearly as anybody else. If Republicans are smart, they'll stick with representing those hard-working, traditional American families who just want government out of their faces and out of their wallets. Blacks who want to join in, as many already have, are always more than welcome.

Do agree with this quote from Herbert?

This is the party of the Southern strategy — the party that ran, like panting dogs, after the votes of segregationist whites who were repelled by the very idea of giving equal treatment to blacks. Ronald Reagan, George H.W. (Willie Horton) Bush, George W. (Compassionate Conservative) Bush — they all ran with that lousy pack.

How many people of color did Clinton appoint to positions of power as compared to President Bush?
