Plan Uses Taxes to Fight Climate Change
The Washington Post ^ | September 26, 2007 | H. JOSEF HEBERT

Posted on 09/26/2007 5:18:12 PM PDT by magellan

WASHINGTON -- Dealing with global warming will be painful, says one of the most powerful Democrats in Congress. To back up his claim he is proposing a recipe many people won't like a 50-cent gasoline tax, a carbon tax and scaling back tax breaks for some home owners.

"I'm trying to have everybody understand that this is going to cost and that it's going to have a measure of pain that you're not going to like," Rep. John Dingell, who is marking his 52nd year in Congress, said Wednesday in an interview with The Associated Press.

Note there is no plan to use the taxes to fix the environment, it is simply a plan to punish people.

If the theory is a $0.50 gas tax would reduce consumption, what does Dingell think a doubling of gas prices of the last few years have done?

If Dingellberry's proposal used the taxes to fund nuclear power plants, I might feel differently.

So they went from talking about tax CUTS a year a go (so they could win the 2006 elections) to talking tax HIKES. I guess I am surprised they lasted this long.

The Dems really ought to let everyone know that they want to raise gas taxes 50 cents a gallon and take away tax breaks for homeowners. The voters should be very happy to hear that.

Besides the fact that this pol wants to increase taxes to 'fix' something that has not even been proven to exist (human caused global warming), it is yet more proof that the mental midgets we call politicians have only one solution for everything: raise taxes..

They already take 3,000,000,000,000 dollars a year from us. But, not enough. They want it all and if that means fabricating stories to get it, no problem. After all, they are politicians.

The more they tax you, the more control they have over you. They don’t need a reason for the tax.........just take it. Our government is in the taking mood and we have too much freedom for them. The people of this country need to take control back. This is our country, not theirs.

Aww, come on, this is the same methodology that has been used on cigarette prices for a number of years by the many states. Raise the taxes, people gripe, they don’t get up in arms...

Oh, wait, that’s right, these morons are targetting the largest group of voters out there. Then again, if Bush signs it, it becomes a Republican raise.

It’s climate change. Not global warming.

Unless the earth remains perfectly stable in temperature (which it never has) we will be punished for our energy-using sins.

This climate change garbage has little to do with weather and much to do with power and control.

Rep. John Dingell, who is marking his 52nd year in Congress

I call again for all politicians to let us know exactly what prescription drugs they are on.

Is it not interesting that a large segment of the senior population in this country have problems with dementia, forgetfullness, their minds slowing down, but no one in congress!!

Is it not interesting that the vast majority of seniors in this country are on multiple prescriptions, and many of these prescriptions have side effects that alter brain function for the worse, but no one in congress!!

It is time for the peeples to know what prescriptions all politicians are on. We need to know if they are using prescriptions that are altering their decision making processes. If a politician that can decide law, that can confiscate my money, that can make decisions of life and death is taking a prescription that alters brain function, we the peeples should know about it!

And yes, I am talking only about legal drugs here.

People need to write their Congressmen and demand no new taxes. It worked with the immigration bill....we proved that. Close down the switchboard at the White House again. They haven’t even proven that there is Global Warming yet but they want to tax us on it. It’s not Global Warming....it’s the money they want.

I wouldn't. The government just needs to get out of the way, and keep the environ-nazis away too. The power companies, and power districts* will build the plants.

*Nebraska has no private power companies, but at one time they had nuclear plants at twoo different sites, and earlier had the first plant to pump nuclear generated power into the grid. That one has since been converted to fossile fuel, it was never designed for a long life.

One reason why the 17th Amendment should never have passed. In a world without the 17th, Senators appointed by poor and conservative states would oppose such dubious House shenanigans and, hopefully, stop them dead in their tracks.

I think the late great Steve Goodman put it best:

"And I saw the boss come a-walkin' down along the factory line,
He said, "We all have to tighten up our belts."
But he didn't look any thinner than he did a year ago
And I wonder just how hungry that man felt.

He knows it ain't too hard to get along with somebody else's troubles,
They don't make you lose any sleep at night.
Just as long as fate is out there burstin'somebody' else's bubbles.
Everything is gonna be alright.

Dingell is doing our work for us, folks. He's trying to illustrate to his clueless Dem colleagues how raising taxes will be a very politically unpopular decision. I'm no fan of his but, in this case, I think he's on to something.

Bear in mind that he represents a big auto-making region and really doesn't want to see the golden goose slain on the altar of global warming.

52 years?!?! Another example of desperately needed term limits.

8 for presidents, 12-18 for senators, 12-18 for congressmen. No pensions, no lifetime health insurance, no automatic or self-approved pay raises.

“Dealing with global warming will be painful, says one of the most powerful Democrats in Congress”

No, HEARING about Glo-Bull warming, the invented false science that is really just Liberal politics dressed up in bogus technical sounding “reports”, is what is painful.

I swear the Glo-Bull warming zealots are kind of like the flagellants during the Black plague, except that it isn’t themselves that must experience the pair of self sacrifice, it is the “little people” who must be whipped and scarred. If only the little people will listen to and sacrifice as the enlightened zealots want, heaven itself will come to Earth under THEIR pious leadership.

But isn’t that always the way with Libs/Socialists/Communists? Their proscription's apply to everyone but themselves, naturally. They are much too important to give up their private jets, industrial sized mansions or Hummers. We just need to accept that some people are more equal than others, and enlightened Libs are more equal than anyone. They certainly do.

Sometimes the law defends plunder and participates in it. Thus the beneficiaries are spared the shame and danger that their acts would otherwise involve... But how is this legal plunder to be identified? Quite simply. See if the law takes from some persons what belongs to them and gives it to the other persons to whom it doesn't belong. See if the law benefits one citizen at the expense of another by doing what the citizen himself cannot do without committing a crime. Then abolish that law without delay. ...
