HANOI - A bridge under construction collapsed in southern Vietnam on Wednesday, killing at least 60 workers, and 100 others were missing, a contractor and police said.
State-run Vietnam TV showed footage of the damage to the collapsed concrete and steel structure in Can Tho City and reported that people were still trapped in the rubble.
A contractor with China State Construction Engineering Corp, one of the firms involved in the construction of the bridge, said by telephone that 60 people were dead.
"They are still pulling out bodies from the rubble, I could hear the screams," the contractor said from Can Tho, which is 170 km (105 miles) south of the commercial centre of Ho Chi Minh City.
Police said there were about 100 workers directly under the section of the bridge over the Hau river where the scaffolding collapsed at about 08:30 a.m. (0130 GMT) at the start of a shift. About 150 workers were on the bridge surface, a Can Tho police officer said.
"The figures of victims are still being updated but as many as 100 could be dead or missing for now," the officer said by telephone.
The cause of the collapse on a section of the 2.75 km (1.7 miles) long bridge was not immediately known, but Vietnam TV reported that rains may have softened the foundation.
The bridge was being built at a cost of $300 million to be finished next year.
Most of the workers were Vietnamese but the contractor said that less than 10 Filipinos and Japanese workers were unaccounted for.

Where’s OSHA!?!
Wasn’t Can Tho a target in N VietNam during the war?
LOL
OSHA, hell. Where’s FEMA?
Bush’s fault.
Beat me to it.
It’s Lyndon Johnson’s fault it took so long.
Perhaps a target in South Viet Nam. It's apparently south of Saigon. "105 miles) south of the commercial centre of Ho Chi Minh City."
Prayers for the victims.
making sure you see this
Okay, how did Bush, Cheney, Rove and Rumsfeld manage this one?
Lead paint?
China is starting a world war, and we don't even see it!
Building bridges in the Delta has got to be tricky. There is no hard ground there. It's like the Sunshine Skyway over the mouth of Tampa Bay, no bedrock to anchor the pylons. It didn't take much to knock one span down years ago.
darn, I cant be “In before the ‘Bush’s fault’ comment.”
Innocent people are Dying! PULL OUT NOW!
Curfew was 2200 hrs. in Saigon. It was fun driving the Old Man's black Navy sedan around Saigon during curfew. I was flying his Bird and MP's would salute the vehicle while rolling back the barricades.
I was in radio contact and would appear back at "Embassy Row" when the bridge game broke up.
Driving in Saigon during the daytime was always a thriller and "hit and runs" were frequent. Cowboys and gunslingers all, exchanging information after an accident involved a simple display of one's weapon to the opposition and then a quick "di di mau".
Ditto.
b, thanks for your service.
Wow! They've come a long way from bamboo and vines.
Where's William Holden!?!
FMCDH(BITS)

I agree.
the bridge fell apart faster than a Chinese motorcycle...........
A friend of mine in Cam Duc has a Chinese bike that he has had for 3 years. He babies it . It still runs but the exhaust is cracked and the plastic is cracked or gone everywhere. The screws have to be tightened every couple of days and the threads are worn out now. I donated some epoxy I had brought with me when I was there in May for some of those. It will not go much farther.
While I was there I saw several Hondas I might have seen when I was there in the War, mid sixties models, dingy looking but all there and running just fine.

Chinese made dog food, toys - and now concrete?
We worked around Can Tho several times way back when. A bridge was needed badly.
Bamboo and vines were stronger.
> Wasnt Can Tho a target in N VietNam during the war?
No, Can Tho is deep in the South in the Mekong Delta, several hundred miles South of Saigon. My wife’s family lives there.
BUSH’S FAULT! LOUSY INFRASTRUCTURE!
Charlie’s Fault!
Having a Guinness I suspect.
Glad someone understands the the LBJ era. But have you noticed that LBJ is never blamed for anything that went wrong during the Vietnam era? In fact, it's difficult to find anything in America's Democrat Party controlled media that associates LBJ or the Democrat Party with the Vietnam War. The war is always associated with Nixon and the Republican Party -- even though it was Nixon that got America out of the war! LBJ and the Democrat Party are never ever associated with the war.
Same thing with JFK too! And the Bay of Pigs fiasco is never blamed on Kennedy and the Democrats but on some behind the scenes, nebulous right-wing entities.
I went to your About page, and will say that I very much enjoyed your writing of your travels in and about Viet Nam...............
:}
My old work light sparked and smoked when I plugged it in, so I bought a work light at Home Chinese Depot. The porcelain light socket was cracked. I took it back and got another. The cheapo pot metal connector on the leg was broken.
The 4$$hole guy from electrical tried to blame me for breaking the socket and then asked me if I got frustrated and kicked the second one and broke it.
Needless to say, I did not get a third chinese work lamp. I plugged in an old floor lamp and put a 200 W bulb in it.
Needless to say, I can’t wait for the new Lowe’s to open so I can buy my chinese $h1t merchandise from different people.
