Senate to consider ratification of U.N. Law of the Sea Treaty
One News Now ^ | September 27, 2007 | Chad Groening

A national defense analyst says it's absolutely crazy that Pentagon officials will push the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to recommend the quick ratification of the U.N. Law of the Sea Treaty.

Cliff Kincaid, president of America's Survival, has already expressed his concerns that the Chinese have been using their huge trade advantage with the U.S. to build up their navy, while the U.S. Navy plans to further reduce the number of ships in its fleet. (See earlier article) But Kincaid says instead of changing course and rebuilding to counter the Chinese threat, top Naval officials, including Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Mike Mullen, want to depend on a piece of paper to keep America secure.

"We've got U.S. Navy leaders who are going before the Senate of the United States telling them rather than build more ships we need to sign a treaty. [They're saying] we need to ratify the so-called U.N. Law of the Sea Treaty. Frankly, I don't see how a piece of paper from the U.N. -- an anti-American agency to boot -- is going to help us," he laments.

Kincaid states by taking that route, the U.S. would be putting its security in the hands of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea. "We're simply going to get out-voted, and all the decisions under this International Law of the Sea Tribunal are going to go against us. It's simply craziness. It's worse than that -- it's a delusion. And yet this is [what's staring us] in the face now," he says.

According to Kincaid all the witnesses at the September 27 hearing are pro-treaty. He says another hearing is scheduled to follow and a quick Senate vote on the pact is then predicted.

Which is precisely why the Pentagon (read liberal entrenched bureaucrats)hated Rumsfeld.

Regardless of what you believe about his leadership on Iraq, the long knives at the Pentagon, hated his guts and did everything necessary to rid themselves of him.

Here’s an idea........why don’t we just get rid of our Navy and have the Chinese protect us? Maybe we should get rid of all of our military? Then sit back and let the Democrats figure out how to take care of this country. Globalization is going to kill this country.

So... what does the treaty do? Lots of fear and loathing and gnashing of teeth, but a poverty of facts.

So what’s in this treaty?

Maybe we should all start signing over pay checks over to Uncle Sam.

For one thing, the treaty established a U.N. Seabed Authority, to which member countries must pay a fee to develop mineral resources in international waters. In effect, the U.N. gets a dedicated source of revenue.

For another thing, the treaty created an International Tribunal to resolve disputes, presumably occurring between signatories in international waters over such things as mineral rights. There is a good chance this tribunal will be stacked against us.

There are also other FreeRepublic posts that go into greater detail about the provisions of the treaty.

Bush wants to sign this. It’s a bipartisan rape going on here.

We know the U.N. Are you trying to say that you think something wonderful will come out of it?

Seriously bud, check yourself in if there’s no one else around.

If Lybia and Syria can become the chairs of terrorism and human rights commissions, what’s to stop the U.N. from installing Iran’s leader as the chair of the Sea Bed commission?

Do we even need to debate this one? Seriously?

(not directed at you)
