English won't be Bakersfield's official language

Bakersfield, Calif. (AP) --

A bid to make English the official language of this San Joaquin Valley city failed after much debate.

The city council also shot down on Wednesday another proposal that would have made clear that Bakersfield is not a sanctuary for illegal immigrants, but it approved a resolution calling on the federal government to enact immigration reform.

After the meeting, opponents of the English-only and the sanctuary resolutions praised the council for making the "morally correct" decision.

. . . Famed labor leader Dolores Huerta, who spoke to city council members, called the defeated resolutions "hateful" and "divisive."

“And in time, people may find themselves with the understanding that no one is going to fix this problem for us until we begin to revolt against it.”

BTTT!

We need to defend our country in anyway we can.

We can no longer depend on our “leaders” to do it for us.

For some reason the words of Thomas Paine — “these are the times that try mens souls” — come to mind.

The hispanic gangbangers are so thick in an old neighborhood in the town where I grew up that no one goes there anymore, especially at night. This was a neighborhood of legal immigrants from Italy and Yugoslavia, and most have been scared out of their lifetime homes.

The leaders of this country have done everything they can to start a race war in America, and they will probably succeed. Martial law, here we come!

“The leaders of this country have done everything they can to start a race war in America, and they will probably succeed. Martial law, here we come!”

I think you are right.

However, we should not allow these “leaders” (traitors) to manipulate us into race wars, thereby allowing them to justify Martial law.

We need to do what we can to save the country — while avoiding the aforementioned trap.

Glad to know I wasn't the only one to read that and take it seriously. Kind of like all those liberals bugging Charlton Heston for guns when the LA riots were running rampant - the libs learn they were wrong all along and come crying with their heads bowed.

Let them reap what they sowed.

Having an offical language has helped move them toward unity and progress.

English did the same for India as well.

All of the discussion about and the founding documents of this nation are in English, and the concepts thereof may not survive translation. But then that is the aim of those who would keep these people doing jobs 'Americans would not do'.

It is as much a disservice to not teach the (legal) immigrants English as it is to teach 'Ebonics', neither of which will get them a decent job.

The illegals should be sent home.

Oh, they’re coming, but English is the official language in the State of North Dakota.

When I think of Bakersfield I think of Buck Owens.

Me, too. Fifty years ago, the only other language than English considered would have been 'Okie'... (8^D)

Out in the fields Okies used to what the Mexicans are doing now. FWIW I am not a country music fan but I like Buck Owens, Dwight Yokum affectionately “stole” from him. Buck is Bakersfield is indelibly etched in my mind

I used to watch Buck on TV (and the Buckaroos) as a youngster. I still like that kind of music. I have worked with a crowd of Okies in the oil patch, good folks, all.

We should have froze that moment in time. USA hasn’t gotten any better since then and Bakersfield is much much worse

The Valley has gone pretty far downhill, hasn't it. Van Nuys 60 years ago and today. The last thing it needs is more immigration.

Okay got a story that happened just last night.
Lamont is one of our small perimeter towns that is 07% hispanic. A friend of ours, a legal immigrant, owns a restaurant out there that we go to to eat all the time.
Yesterday we had reservations for the extended family and us at 6 pm.
Our daughter, and her 2 kids were stopped by a CHP on the corner of Panama and Fairfax which is about 1/2 mile outside of town. He wanted to know where she was going. She told him to dinner and he asked why. She told him to the name of the restaurant and he asked why. She talked to him a few minutes and then drove on to the restaurant and told us about it.
About halfway thru dinner the CHP showed up at the restaurant and it was someone hubby knew so we talked to him.
He said he saw a pretty blonde in a brand new car headed into town and wanted to make sure she wasn’t lost and was safe.
Even the cop knew that she shouldn’t be there, especially after dark.

Dumb response.
Kern County is one of the most conservative places left in California.

“Like where? Where can we go anymore? I live in the Valley, the same area the other Freeper was talking about. The same things are happening here as where you are. Where can any of us go where it’s still nice and the invasion isn’t happening, and it isn’t likely to happen in the future? (Other than expensive, gated communities?) I wish someone would tell me.”

Simple. Leave California to rot. Move to another state where elected officials actually insist on enforcing the law. An article came out today in USA Today, clearly showing that in these states, illegals are packing up and moving, either to sanctuary states, or back to Mexico.

You should go to a place where the law is actually enforced. If Californians started leaving the state in a greater exodus over this issue, there’d be some changes there.

>>It is therefore the Spanish language preference of Ms. Huerta and her ilk that is divisive.<<

Presumably, Ms. Huerta would likewise call a traffic ordinance requiring that motorists all drive on the right side of the street “divisive.”
