London: Undercover police officers have been ordered to put up no-smoking signs in their unmarked cars.
Detectives on stake-outs are also banned from having a cigarette in their vehicle under new anti-smoking laws.
Ministers say officers carrying out surveillance are not exempt from the new smoking legislation which came into force on July 1.
However, MPs raised concerns that covert operations could be blown by criminals spotting no smoking signs.
Shadow home secretary David Davis said: "Whilst everyone understands the need for a smoke-free environment, it seems to me that this legislation has gone beyond common sense."
Liberal Democrat home affairs spokesman Nick Clegg called for undercover police cars to be exempt from the smoking sign legislation.
He said: "It's obvious that these rules should have some common sense exemptions. Hopefully those responsible for this rule can be made to come quickly to their senses."
However, the government said no-smoking signs should not hamper the police.
Maybe these unmarked cars should sport big signs that say “suspects must never be spoken to in a cross or disrespectful fashion”.
I hate to be so honest about this, but it all comes down to pushy women and feminized men coming up with these incredibly stupid, unbelievably fascistic ideas and turning them into public policy. This has to stop, or the West is dead.

My wife has said for years that a woman not "allowing" their husbands to smoke in their own home is more about control than about the actual smoke. And she's a woman, so I'll take her word on it.

Who ever thought this up have to be pretty darned stupid. Cop wants cigarette gets out puffs a few gets back in the car is or will be a dead give away when they are on stake out for those that are aware of the new rule.
