Additionally, Duke has always had a lot of Asians. All the top tier schools do. Those are the kids with the high test scores and great grades! My son is in the class of ‘09 which is pre-Nifong and there are a ton of Asians in his class.
Lest you think I am some kind of Brodhead synchophant, I gave them an ear full about the 88 faculty and their pathetic “listening” ad when they surveyed all the parents in the spring. I read Durham in Wonderland every day throughout the entire ordeal. It is frustrating to me that there are many FR posters who have jumped onto a bandwagon about which they know nothing. Just b/c Duke is a top tier school with a great reputation, they are very quick to trash it broadly (no pun intended) rather than target those who genuinely deserve the criticism (the 88). It is very much like the class warfare that the Dims attempt in every election cycle. The entire faculty is something like 1500 people. There are many who are wonderful, thoughtful professors.

"Not true, meathead." and "Youre a bigotted clown ..."

And you sweetheart, have all the charm of a used piece of toilet paper, and your comprehension skill are less.

I do not care about the families that did get a raw deal, because they are pushing one themselves.

Their beef is with the VOTERS and not the TAXPAYERS.

Suing the taxpayers for more than their legal costs is wrong.

Maybe in your twisted little world two wrongs make a right, but they don't in mine. Now go home and get your shine box.

I think it's wonderful that there is legal recourse if you are stupid enough to pour coffee on your lap, but if you are minding your own business - and some of the the lacrosse players were not even at the party - and you are placed in jeopardy of 30 years' imprisonment because of the intentional malicious acts of a politician, Mark was here feels free to second guess you for taking it seriously. After the fact, he knows that you did not in fact get jailed or even indicted - so he thinks that the you suffered no harm at all.

But you know that if Mark was here had been in your shoes, he would now be demanding a pound of flesh nearest the heart, from everyone in Durham.

Au contraire , Mr Perspicacity. Taxpayers are voters, and all voters pay taxes either directly or indirectly. You vote for evil and you get caught, you pay the piper. A jury can award punitive costs and in this case, they will. Otherwise, these elected miscreants will pull the same thing again and again. You don't have to abide a corrupt local government; you can always move.

20 % in the Class of '010 and over 40% in the Class of '011. Not exactly "expected".. (The other Ivies are around 15 %)

Oh, and I believe the undergrad proffesor faculty is like 500 not 1500, and 120 or so out of 500 seems really high, IMO (the notorious 88 plus some of the 87 who signed the Jan4 letter)

The problem with Duke is the radical faculty rules the roost and is determined to control the endownment there. No humanities prof is hired that they dont vet. And their goal is to infiltrate the other disciplines too. I wouldnt spend 45 k a year sending my kid to that school, but that's just me..

I am referring to the 1890 incident.

In other words, too little too late.

As to you comments on tobacco, I am appreciative to the Indians for introducing the Whiteman to tobacco. Any object or material can be used or abused. I have enjoyed tobacco responsibly for most of my life and it brings me great pleasure. The same can be said for firearms.

Taxpayers are voters,

Illegals pay taxes, like sales taxes, yet they are not voters.

Voters and Taxpayers are two distinct groups sharing many of the same members.

Those who elected Nifong are the proper target. Not going after the proper target, but a different target because it has deeper pockets, (and you can get away with it), is simply wrong.

I believe that voting is more than an opinion poll. It is a serious responsibility, and those who vote should be actually held responsible.

Sure the adults who went to Duke got a raw deal, from a corrupt liberal establishment, it is obvious. They should have settled for their legal costs and the destruction of Nifong. They went too far in seeking punitive damages from the wrong party.

Hi Barnacle, I was just using the whiney logic in reverse. I should have put sarcasm after my statement. Maybe your tobacco is clouding your perception.

By whiney logic, it is the blame the whiteman for bringing in diseases to the Indians. Mostly, it is from activists who want to stir up trouble between races who repeat things like that.

PS, the 2nd amendment is the best amendment. My 45 cal sig, in stainless is close at hand.

Have fun, but go light on the tobacco. It was 3 packs a day, camel, non-filter, when I quit. Lucky I did, my wife to be would not have given me a second look.

The site College Board.com has statistics that compare schools with the same criteria. It states that Duke has 20% Asians. Most Ivys are around 15%. Stanford and MIT are above 25% and UCLA and Berkeley are 45%.
The 1500 faculty number includes the law and medical faculty IIRC.
I don’t disagree that “their” goal is to infiltrate the faculty at Duke with leftists but I am saying that it is no different at other top tier schools. Houston Baker went to Vanderbilt after all, and they welcomed him with open arms. Another extremist 88 member went to Cornell. State schools are hardly immune either as is illustrated by the school up the road from me: CU. They are trying to fire Ward Churchill but it is extraordinarily difficult and has been an arduous and expensive fight. Unless you are prepared to send your child to Hillsdale or one of the very small church sponsored schools, you are going to find these types on campus. Academia is the last bastion of the 60s liberals.

BTW, I agree with Jay Bilas that Brodhead would make a wonderful English department chair but has come up short as president. He is a delightful man: extremely bright, articulate and creative. His writing is exceptional. However, the most important role of college presidents these days is development (major gifts). I do not know how well he fulfilled that role. I suspect when the trustees sit down to discuss his continued employment as president, his development track record will be front and center.

"I am saying that it is no different at other top tier schools"

The combination of town-gown and radical left faculty makes Duke unique and "dangerous", IMO. If I had to pick an Ivy, I'd pick Princeton; this nonsense would never have happened there ( or at most of the Ivies for that matter)

Oh,and College Board wouldnt print the makeup of the Class of '011 alone; you'd have to read the Duke Alumni mag for that info. Why in the world Duke's makeup has to look like the California State schools, I can't imagine.

Actually, I could not disagree with you more. The Ivys are ripe for this very attitude and behavior IMO. Look at Harvard with Cornell West and the Larry Summers fiasco. Penn had the infamous “Water Buffalo” incident where a student was expelled after telling some black women to “shut up you water buffaloes!”. He was deemed a racist and expelled. Fortunately, he eventually won on appeal but not without much expense and determination. Yale had to give back a $20 million gift b/c they did not institute the Western Civ program the Bass family had intended the gift to support. Dartmouth is in a huge fight with their alumni b/c they were making decisions that were detrimental to the school (in the alumnae’s opinion). Trustees have been replaced on the board, people are threatening bylaw changes- it’s chaos!
I have read about some super lefties at Princeton but I don't recall their names. Brodhead himself came from Yale. IMO, the Ivory Tower nature of the Ivys makes it easy for these situations to occur.

There's nothing wrong with my perception.

As to tobacco, as I said, I have used it responsibly. That is to say, an occasional cigar.

I guess I was referring to getting three student athletes framed by a rogue DA while the faculty, local neighbors, mayor's office, police department, and University administration either abetted or said nothing. Duke and Durham have been a tinderbox for a long time and have been written up in various college books even before this incident.(not that this could be predicted, of course)

As nutty as the Ivies are and infiltrated with PC wingnuts as they are, I doubt this would have happened in Princeton , New Jersey or Rhode Island or any of the other places. For crying out loud, you have local Durham cops throwing college kids into the brink with crack heads and rapists just for carrying an open beer can while local thugs with unlicensed guns get only a warning! Only in Durham!

Of course I wasn’t referring to Nifong and Gottleib, etc. That was a perfect storm that happened b/c of a rogue DA. The situation was made worse, however, by the 88 faculty and Brodhead (plus some other administrators). I wasn’t clear- my bad.
It was the uber lefty professors at the Ivys that I was referring to.
I think that we should also agree to disagree although we likely agree on most things (including this).

That comment was supposed to humorous.

I was recently at my uncle’s 101st birthday. He gave up smoking at 94 so that he would not die young. Or did I say that already?

That is humorous. Good for your uncle. I hope you have the same genes as he has.

Humorous but true.

I hope not to have his genes, his wife was my mom’s sister.

That would mean he wasn’t really my uncle.

Take it easy and enjoy life, even though my three pack a day camel cigarette non-filter habit was fun, I am glad that phase of my life is over.

Consider taking up different pastimes to replace tobacco. Pastimes like going to the gun range, watching Flash Gordon on the SCI-FI channel, exercise in moderation, hitting a pleasant bar at happy hour and enjoying freewings. The taste of a good beer is so much better without that tobacco. Yes, I am a reform smoker. Anyhow, you have to want to quit before you do. Good luck.
