Giant Ocean Pipes a Quickfix to Warming?
The Times of India ^ | September 28, 2007 | Reuters

(LONDON) -- A series of giant pipes in the oceans to mix surface and deeper water could be an emergency fix for the Earth's damaged climate system, the scientist behind the Gaia theory said on Wednesday.

James Lovelock, whose Gaia hypothesis that Earth is a living entity has fuelled controversy for three decades, thinks the stakes are so high that radical solutions must be tried even if they ultimately fail.

In a letter to the journal Nature, he proposes vertical pipes 100 to 200 meters long and 10 metres wide be placed in the sea, so that wave motion pumps up water and fertilizes algae on the surface.

This algal bloom would push down carbon dioxide levels and also produce dimethyl sulphide, helping to seed sunlight-reflecting clouds.

"If we can't heal the planet directly, we may be able to help the planet heal itself," Lovelock, of the University of Oxford, and co-author Chris Rapley, from London's Science Museum, said. The two scientists argued it was unlikely any of the well-intentioned technical or social schemes for limiting carbon would restore the planet's status quo.

International climate experts have warned that global warming, blamed mainly on greenhouse gases emitted by burning fossil fuels, will bring more droughts, heatwaves, floods and rising sea levels.

Commenting on Lovelock's idea, Brian Hoskins, professor of meteorology at the University of Reading, said it was scientifically sound but there were huge unknowns. "This is the latest in a line of geo-engineering solutions," he said.

Feverish & bloated, you say? Give two asprin, administer a mineral oil enema, and call me in the morning.

As for Lovelock; yes, definitely a terminal case.

So give us another billion or so and we'll come up with some more nifty, unproven, but scientifically sound, solutions.

What a buncha BS!!

There should be a race between this idea and the other one where we "seed" the ocean with iron. Yeah, right.

LOL! - I think we can file this one where that giant-fans-to-blow-pollution-out-of-Mexico-City idea is being kept.

Well, that part is right. Giant fans blow. So do 'Niner fans and Warrior fans.

IS THIS STUPID OR WHAT!!!!!!!! The mere human has no reason to try and change Our Creator's Creation. What's happening to this earth is SOP. Man has had NOTHING to do with it.

Ahh, but how much global warming will go into the production and implementation of this idea?

Wouldn’t it be easier to just have everyone, all at once, leave their refrigerator doors open for a half an hour or so?

Or maybe we could begin using Gasex as a cattle feed additive?

Or maybe we could get everyone on the planet to jump off their dressers at noon, thereby producing a series of 24 jolts driving the earth slightly away from the sun.

Or maybe all of the above, once a week, mandated and enforced by the UN, until the problem is solved. Whether it works or not.

"The Millenial Project Colonizing the Galaxy in Eight Easy Steps" by Marwhall T Savage" uses OTEC to generate electricity, mine the ocean, support aquaculture and many other technologies to colonize the Galaxy.

Arthur Clarke's Intro to this book says, "I am completely awed and I don't awe easily, by the author's command of a dozen engineering disciplines and his amazing knowledge of scientific and technical literature."

Loons who haven't a clue, "Read Alglobus", believe that they can lead us when they can't fathom the rules of Ring Around the Rosey.

Read Savage's "Star Trek" and see how Earth and the Galaxy can benefit from his skills!

So there I was, driving up I-35 north of Austin TX.
There was a billboard with 2 choices:
* head in the sand about global warming
* ready to search for solutions to solve the global warming problem (or some such insane banter) As if it is a forgone conclusion that we are all doomed!
You either have to believe their side of the argument, or you have your “head in the sand”.
Not surprising considering there are a whole bunch of “educated” nut-jobs who call Austin TX home.
I bet the caveman show will be a big hit in Austin!!!

Naw! This will never work. I heard Rush Limbaugh talking about another plan to dump millions of tons of iron in the oceans. Supposed to alter carbon produced by the algae or something.

Hummm! All of the ships sunk during WWII didn't do it? But that is a lot of ocean to cover isn't it? Maybe all the cars in junkyards throughout the world could be dumped in the oceans. Might even raise the level of the oceans. /sacrasm off

I don’t think that’s what the guy had in mind, but certainly one could use a heat pipe operating between the ocean depths and the surface to power the pumps to do what he is proposing. Not sure wave motion will be sufficient to do what he is proposing.

Nothing new under the sun.

Judges 3:7 And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD, and forgat the LORD their God, and served Baalim and the groves (money and nature worship).

"he proposes vertical pipes 100 to 200 meters long and 10 metres wide be placed in the sea, so that wave motion pumps up water and fertilizes algae on the surface."

And, if you run the cold 200 meter water through a surface heat exchanger, you can generate tiny amounts of electric energy. I have no idea what that did to the algae that came with the cold water.

(Normal currents play hell with a 200 metre 600 foot "pipe" by the way)

fix for the Earth's damaged climate system

If the article described what part of the climate system is damaged perhaps some creditability could be achieved and then those annoying continental plate’s shifting problems could be tackled.

I've always said that global warming, whatever the cause, is simply an engineering problem. There are any number of ways to lower global temperatures if and when we want to.

The problem, of course, is that the global warming cheerleaders don't want a real solution to warming. Fixing the problem is not on their agenda.

They're like tax man from the old Creedence song "Fortunate Son": When you ask, how much should you destroy the Western economy, they only answer, 'more, more, more'.

The mere human has no reason to try and change Our Creator's Creation.

That's the whole point, The reason why the left is embracing "global warming" is because it is anti-God. They can say they don't believe in God without actually saying it.
