SYLACAUGA, Ala. -- Sylacauga community leaders are preparing to boycott the city's school system.
During a community meeting Sunday night, area pastors asked parents to pull their kids out of school this week.
Organizers are protesting what they consider inequality in the teaching ranks.
They said fewer than 10 percent of the city's teachers are black while black students make up 38 percent of the district's enrollment.
The boycott is expected to start this morning with organizers hoping to keep more than 200 students out of the classroom for the rest of the week.
And of those, how many applied to become teachers in that district? The school can't hire qualified black teachers if none apply.
And the solution... have the children of "your community" NOT report to school.
Cause and effect, people....
Are they saying white teachers cannot teach black students?
Or not enough qualified black teachers are applying for jobs in this area??
s/off
As long as the parents teach them at home this is a good thing.
they are not children - they’re PAWNS!!!
Ha! What if white fans boycotted the NBA until they have racial balance? We really need to start that movement, and considering the NBA kinda sucks anyway...
50% of elementary students are boys and only about 6% of elementary school teachers are men. Where is the outrage?
... [crickets chirping] ...
Just the kind of argument I was looking for... thanks for nailing it.
Oooh, boycott schools!
I live near Sylacauga and my county has an even smaller percentage of black teachers compared to black students (about 20%). This has been discussed before and the problem is black teachers do not/will not apply to teach in a small town. Efforts have been made to recruit black teachers, but with only marginal success.
Probably about the same situation in Sylacauga, which had a population of 12,616 for the 2000 census.
Sylacauga, Alabama, is Jim Nabors’ birthplace. Maybe the black kids can’t understand teachers who sound like Gomer Pyle?
Hiring anyone according to their race is, be definition, a racist act. Being a good teacher is not connected in any way to the amount of pigment in someone’s skin.
On the other hand, I must remember that there are rules for “white” people (act guilty for racism and be quiet) and different rules for “nonwhite” people (make demands and never take responsibility). Therefore, I’m the racist for even bringing up the subject. I’ve got to remember that. </sarcasm>
The kids will really get screwed in the end because then when they finally get black teachers, they will notice that they are not as smart as the white teachers and then complain that their ‘black’ schools are unequal.
The boycott isn't working.
And they will have the parity they want. The teachers will be black, and they will learn something too!
I hope they try homeschooling just for that one week. It will open their eyes. Don’t need to rely on the state to meet your “school” requirements.
There are bad teachers in every race, and there are also a lot of teachers who feel no sense of responsibility to their home town. They’re certainly being smart to choose the best living/working/paying conditions that they can, which is apparently not Sylacauga.
Some Blacks are stupid and the boycott proves it.
Well I’ll join you, that’s two of us.
