That one on Baseball was a crock and a half... Pete Hamill reminiscing how his old man took him by the hand to Ebbetts Field. I doubt if that ever happened. I knew the Hamills. The old man was always passed out in Farrell’s. He never took anyone to a baseball game.

I’ve long stopped watching Burns’ propaganda pieces because regardless of the ostensible topic, the underlying theme was always the same and can be summed up succinctly: “Hate America and Hate Whitey.”

Even more aggravating is the sound track. If I hear Boogey Woogey Bugle Boy one more time....

I reached my limit last night, so haven’t seen any of tonight’s episode. Its a very distorted view of WWII in my opinion. A real victim fest with the Military and American society taking most of the blame for visiting this misery on the American people. Funny, I thought that the Germans and the Japanese had something to do with it.

I don’t have a problem showing viewers the horrors of war, although unless you have lived it, you can never really understand. But I do object to the way he manipulated the stories, the narrative, and the visuals to advance a message so foundly embraced by today’s “anti-war” left. The problem with these folks is that they are not really “anti-war”, just anti-military and anti-America.

The criticism of our country and our Armed Forces is never ending, but you will wait in vain to hear any condemnation of of Stalin, Mao, Ho Chi Minh, Pol Pot, or any of the other left wing tyrants who murdered untold millions.

Excellent! That sums up the works of Ken Burns in a nutshell.

Frank Capra’s “Why We Fight” (1943) is better viewing. Seven volumes on vhs, 4 discs dvd.

Burns likes to hook people in and give the the ole sucker punch. I started watching his series about American Jazz. At first it was superb, then about the third episode he brought in lynching and racism. I was done with it.

Picked up the bias early. Haven’t watched since. The libs really hate us. And they hate the US.

I'm watching it now ... I've seen bits and pieces of the other episodes. I'm not impressed.

Neither is explained. Only that a lot of people got killed in the mean time.

I agree. Burns seems fascinated with death tolls.

When describing the "Allied bombing of Germany" tonight, the narrator said that 500,000 German civilians were killed and (you could see this coming) women and children were hardest hit.

Damn those mean ol' Allies.

Burns could weave racism into a documentary about sliced bread.

The mission of the 101st Airborne Division was to take Carentan and thus link Omaha and Utah into a continuous beachhead. It took an all-out commitment from the airborne infantry. One of the critical actions was led by Lt. Col. Robert Cole, CO of the 3rd Battalion, 502nd PIR.

Cole was twenty-nine years of age, an Army brat and a 1939 West Point graduate, born and trained to lead.

Less than five years from 'butter bar' to Lt. Col. and in command of a battalion.

In early 1940 the US Army totaled 175,000. A little over a year later it totaled 1,400,000. Almost 10 times the number of officers were needed immediately. A West Point graduate had at least been thoroughly trained in the theory of warfare.

I bet a whole lot of majors and LTCs in 1941 and 1942 were “recent” graduates, if you define recent as a year or two. Under the circumstances, where are you going to get officers that are any better qualified for senior rank?

I watched it last night for the first and last time...I am very much into WWII history and have done a good amount of research, reading a lot of Ambrose and other things....

within ten minutes I could sense the blame-America- we are just as bad as the enemy, vibe coming from this documentary...

It was very obvious after watching 5 minutes that The War was a bunch of liberal, racist crap. The only program I watch on the public channel is the one about antiques.

The plodding pace of the series doesn’t work for me. It worked for the Civil War one, but it is aggravating here.

I agree. There's no rhythm to it. The scene jumps from Germany to Japan to Iwo Jima to Germany again. It's a jumbled mess.

Sheesh, the narrator is talking about Japan now: Allied bombing forced 8 million Japanese from there homes.

Those Allies must have been the worst people in the world. /s

I do the same. “band of brothers” is as good as it gets. “the color of war” is another to watch over and over also. only in his warped little liberal dreams could burns hope to produce something as excellent as these two WW2 series.

Watching a film about the U.S. military and patriotism on public television is like the people who read the N.Y.Times to get the ‘news’.Thank goodness I do neither.

That's the nut of it. I won't watch PBS unless it is music -- good music.
