3 die in explosion at Hamas headquarters
The Jerusalem Post ^ | 10/02/07 | Yaakov Katz

Three Hamas police officers were killed and two wounded after sundown Tuesday when a car exploded outside a Hamas security headquarters building in Gaza City, hospital and security officials said. At first Hamas blamed Israel, but later said it was unclear what caused the blast.

The car exploded went off on the Gaza beachfront near the Hamas marine police force building.

The Hamas-controlled Gaza Interior Ministry released a statement saying the car was hit by an Israeli naval vessel offshore, killing three marine police officers.

But later, the Hamas government backed away, releasing a statement saying, "Investigations are still under way to determine what caused the blast, who was behind it and who was killed."

The IDF said it was not involved.

Witnesses reported gunfire in the area after the blast, indicating an internal clash. Israel's Channel 10 TV quoted Israeli military officials as saying Palestinian militants fired an anti-tank rocket at the car.

I believe it was back in the 80’s in Lebanon when they tried to get a major terrorist. My recollection is they missed him.

Hell, when was the first time Israel employed a car bomb?

It predates the State of Israel, but happened on January 12, 1947, when Zionists of the Lehi under Avraham Stern drove a truckload of explosives into a British police station in Haifa, Palestine, killing four and injuring 140. Lehi truck and car bombs were used both for assassination of individual targets and to kill and terrorize occupants of British Palestine as well.

See Mike Davis's Buda's Wagon: A Brief History of the Car Bomb for additional details and instances since.

When was the last time that Israel employed a car bomb?

The classic and best-documented example would have been following the Munich Olympic Massacre in 1972, during the Israeli retaliatory killings/assassinations variously referred to as The Wrath of God or the Caesarea Operations, in one of which Mohammad Boudia, the Algerian-born director of operations for Black September in France known for disguises and womanizing met his end. On June 28, 1973, Boudia was assassinated in Paris by a pressure activated car bomb packed with heavy nuts and bolts placed under his car seat by Israeli agents.

I am corrected.

My suspicion was that this was a PLA job.

But maybe not...

Remember that in the Middle East the aphorism The enemy of my enemy is my friend does indeed sometimes apply.

But it usually has an identifiable half-life.
