TALLAHASSEE, Fla. Republican presidential hopeful Fred Thompson seemed taken by surprise when asked Tuesday about oil drilling in the Everglades, apparently unaware it's been a major Florida issue. Before answering, he laughed at the question. "Gosh, no one has told me that there's any major reserves in the Everglades, but maybe that's one of the things I need to learn while I'm down here," Thompson said after talking over state issues with Gov. Charlie Crist.

Hmmm?
I wasn’t aware of there being any Everglades reserves either. I guess this means I can’t be President.
There’s oil in the everglades?
I guess that makes two of us.
So was I, and I usually keep up on these things. The enviro-fools have so much of the US locked down, nobody knows anymore. When are we gonna tell these overgrown children to STFU and go away?
This old story got a lot of play back in mid-September, when this article came out.
What’s your agenda? Hmmmm???
![]()
Well, you can color me also unaware of such a thing,
and I used to live just an hour away from the glades.
Are you trolling for a zot?
This is old news.
I first heard about it two or three weeks ago.
The date of the story you linked to is Sept. 18.
So hmmm... yourself.
And he wants to be my president!!!!!!
The truth is that we don’t really know much about how much oil there is in Florida, because we can’t drill here.
It probably is one of those things that has a very intense local interest that decreases as you get farther away (like the lost atomic warhead off Savannah!)
It’s news to me, I thought it was all off shore. Hell, I give him credit for being honest.
Hmmmm. Honesty in a politician? Can’t have that....
Well, I was unaware too. It seems that there is estimated to be about 40 million barrels beneath the Everglades. Enough for two days’ US consumption.
In contrast, there are estimated to be about 10 billion barrels of oil in ANWR.
This story is almost a month old. I recall the initial discussion most of the Freepers from Fl also were unaware and it seemed more like Thompson was simply avoiding stepping into a reporter’s trap.
I lived in Florida for 4 years and was not aware of the issue. Even if true, it would be a one in a trillion chance any would ever be allowed to be recovered.
LOL!
He’s revealing himself to be more of a lightweight every day. But I’ll look forward to watching him on Law & Order in the 2009 season.
“I guess that makes two of us.”
I guess that makes 280 million of us...
“Theres oil in the everglades?
I guess that makes two of us.”
Make it 3!
He was pretty deft at covering his butt, though. :)
LOL!!
might have been a very cautious answer to a setup question.....I dunno, but found this:
U.S. Overvalued Everglades Land Rights by $80 Mln, Report Says
By Ryan J. Donmoyer
June 8 (Bloomberg) — The Bush administration’s offer in 2002 to overpay a prominent Florida family for oil and gas rights on Everglades land by as much as $80 million was ``at best, foolish and, at worst, complicit,’’ the Interior Department’s inspector general said today.
In a report to the Senate Finance Committee, Inspector General Earl Devaney said the department nearly tripled earlier estimates of the value of the mineral rights. The agreement wasn’t completed and lawmakers said today that Devaney’s report would scuttle it.
Devaney said in an interview he found no evidence political influence affected the Interior Department’s decision. Instead, he placed much of the responsibility on the land’s owners, the Collier family, who had ``better lawyers and better negotiators’’ than the government.
President George W. Bush announced in May 2002 that the federal government would pay $120 million in cash plus an undetermined amount in tax deductions to prevent the Collier family’s privately held Collier Resources Co. from drilling for oil and gas on 400,000 acres of land it owns in what he called ``critical parts of the Everglades.’’ Two previous government assessments valued the rights between $5 million and $68 million. snipped

This is an old story, and it is still just as incredibly stupid as it was when it was new. Gee, Fred doesn’t know about some obcsure piece of information that only Floridians are likely to know about....oh how horrible, we must not elect him president he is so unaware....LOL!
After Mitt’s awful display today regarding the Rush debacle, and Fred’s outstanding performance, dredging up this old meaningless garbage against Fred is incredibly desparate.
Brass tacks. I’m tired of the sleazy tactics of the Axis of Desperation.
I never heard of it, either. Is someone actually drilling there? Or are they just talking about it and getting the envirowackos all excited? Like the Gulf of Mexico and ANWR.
An aside, when hunting in the Everglades, not only do you come upon oil dericks, but SAM sites too. Bet Fred Thompson didn't know there where SAM sites in FL.
BFD.

“Houston, we have a troll.”
she/he is a new sign up from the ron paul army sent here to trash all other republicans running for president.
I’m a native, 7th generation Floridian, I was unaware of it, and I keep up with the news. I know there’s been big controversies about drilling offshore in the Gulf, but the Everglades oil is news to me.
(The only mention I can ever remember of oil in the Everglades was the oil slick left when a jet crashed there.)
Ditto, didn’t know about it either.
I've been out all day. What did Mitt do? Punt?
“Enough for two days US consumption.”
What about for Florida? If they had a refinery down there it might be cost worthy to use it in their state for a period. They might be able to sell it cheap and accumulate some tax revenue from it for infrastructure projects. If this were possible and the greens were blocking it because an alligator might lose its home, then they need to be challenged. Just speculating here...
I live near the Everglades, news to me.
Check AFreeCountry74's posting history...looks like a paul supporter and very possibly a second screen name
The date of this article is September 18; over two weeks ago. It was discussed extensively on FR at the time. Your post does not make it clear that this is old news. Zot bait?
He’s probably unaware of the natural gas under Lake Erie, too. I’m more interested in what he thinks we should do with our domestic oil and gas than if he knows where each field exists. Dumb reporting.
Mmmm, Fred isn't alligator and exotic creature focused?
Who would have thunk it? LOL!
Nice try though... thanks for playing!
Ron who? LOL
I didn’t know about Oil in the Everglades either.
Gotcha politics is stupid.
I didn't know about any oil down there either.
He either went looking for this article or had it bookmarked and decided to trot it out tonihgt.
Notice how he purposely omitted the article date in the thread header.......
Wow, someone who actually is truthful! How refreshing that Fred will honestly say, he doesn’t know about something instead of making some kind of slick answer to get by. Has oil in the Everglades been in the news a lot? I just live here in Florida, and oil reserves way out in the Gulf of Mexico have been talked about. Guess the environmentalists will keep us from getting that oil, but Cuba is certainly getting it!
Oh, you're refering to ValueJet Flt. #592.
Yeah, that one left a wealthy layer of hycrocarbon compounds on the water surface at the crash site.
