Thompson to Dobson (take a hike)
NRO ^ | 10/4/2007 | Byron York

Posted on 10/04/2007 5:25:13 AM PDT by Neville72

It hasn't gotten much comment yet, but in his interview on Fox last night, Fred Thompson rather emphatically told Focus on the Family chief James Dobson to take a hike. Host Sean Hannity asked Thompson about Dobson, who has attacked Thompson and made it clear he would not support a Thompson candidacy. "Don't read too much into the Dobson thing," Thompson told Hannity, continuing:

A gentleman who has never met me, who has never talked to me, I've never talked to him on the phone. I did have one of his aides call me up and kind of apologize, the first time he attacked me and said I wasn't a Christian…

I don't know the gentleman. I do know that I have a lot of people who are of strong faith and are involved in the same organizations that he is in, that I've met with, Jeri and I both have met with, and I like to think that we have some strong friendships and support there…

Hannity then asked: "Would you want to have a conversation with Dr. Dobson? Do you think that might help?"

I have no idea. I don't particularly care to have a conversation with him. If he wants to call up and apologize again, that's ok with me. But I'm not going to dance to anybody's tune.

Good for Fred.

About time someone put this jackass in his place.

I bet this all started because Fred wouldn't pimp one of his books.

Why do I think that Fred is unlikely to pull a Trent Lott, now or ever?

Isn’t that what Freepers want?

A man with the courage of his convictions, with values and beliefs we can rely upon?

That man is Fred Thompson.

"...Dobson said he didn’t believe Thompson to be a Christian...

I bet there are more people who believe this about Dobson than Fred.

"Now Christians are going back to sulking in the corner."

Not this one. Not only will I not sulk in the corner. I will actively vote for WHICHEVER republican ultimately wins the nomination. It is my firm belief, and indisputable fact, that failure to do so is a de facto vote for whichever traitor ultimately represents worldwide marxism, er the demorats, in the general election.

sulking in the corner

or leaving the Republican Party?
There is much at stake in this election
I would not attempt to drive stakes into
the Christian Right if I were a candidate.....

God moves in mysterious ways.
and if angered....I do not want to be around God .... said the angels....?

I am a Christian and I do not demand that my president publicly declare his faith

I want a president that will uphold the Constitution, defend our borders and stay out of my wallet.

I figure if that president believes in the Constitution I will still be able to worship in my church.

Mr. Dobson has the right to say what he does not speak for me, I make up my own mind and I would hope his followers will do the same.

Besides, Jimmy Carter claims himself as a Christian and we are not impressed.

If someone I had never met and didn’t know made a public statement, or a statement that he knew would go public, that I was not a Christian.....I would have told that person AND the horse he rode in on, to take a hike too.

Sound stupid to you, eh? I think what is even more stupid is for some self-appointed master of all things Christian to label someone not a Christian. Let me tell you something. For years, I have tired of the self-obsessed born-agains and their holier than thou sctick. The ones who judge you because your level of Christianity can never measure up to theirs. I have seen those people in the Protestant and Catholic faiths and they sicken me. I had one born-again tell me years ago that Catholics pray to a different God. And I really had my fill of them when stationed in Naples, Italy. They were as thick as flys there and worse than the airport Kirsnas.

Here's another thing that will probably piss people off. I admire anyone who believes in God but I swear I will never vote for another born-again Christian in my life. I think being born-again is part of Bush's probelm concerning the Dems and his inability to take it to them like he should. Fred may or may not get the Presidency but I get the feeling he is doing it his way. And if he goes down, he'll go down like a man, keeping his dignity and honor intact!

I don’t see where he said, “Take a hike.”

Is NRO misrepresenting Fred’s response so as to denigrate Dobson?

Now Christians are going back to sulking in the corner.

Not this Christian. As much as I like Dr. Dobson for his support for family issues, he doesn't tell me who to vote for.

“Third party.”

Hogwash. If Dobson were to do that (1)the majority of social conservatives would ignore him and vote for conservative Thompson anyway and (2) Dobson would forever consign himself to being irrelevant.

Since when have “Christians” taken orders from this self-appointed jacka$$. Especially when other Christian leaders(Land et al) have publicly supported Thompson.

I certainly will vote for Thompson should he be the nominee. I will vote for whomever the Party chooses to run because to not vote and hand the WH to the liberals is unthinkable.

My take is that Thompson may be more conservative than is apparent at this time. And if he is no more conservative than he appears now, I can still vote for him. More importantly, I think he is electable.

I think he can retain enough of the conservative vote to make a difference in the election outcome. Although it shouldn’t be the case, he’ll probably draw some “moderate” democrat votes because of his Hollywood celebrity. Most Christians will vote for him—even zealots like Dobson—because they dang well know what will happen if Hildebeast wins. Remember, the best the Clintoon did was 48% of the electorate. He won because of conservative disenchantment with the Pubbie candidates.

Fred is a great communicator and seems to have the heart to be confrontational when necessary. I’m so sick and tired of Bush allowing the Dems to define him. His non response to their outrageous claims, assertions or whatever has only encouraged more of the same.

I suppose it sounded clever when you were writing that.

If Fred is a Christian, where does he attend church?

I’m inclined to vote for Fred, but there is evidence that he doesn’t place faith in God and fellowship with believers very high on his priority list.

Have you looked at the Constitution Party?

I wrote the above and then I went to the website and the first sentence involved James Dobson planning a campaign strategy.....so never mind
