SAN FRANCISCO - -- Mayor Gavin Newsom, attending Fleet Week festivities on the Marina Green today, lashed out at conservative critics who mocked San Francisco's consideration of a measure to ban the flight of the Navy's Blue Angels over the city during this week's celebration.
He cited that criticism and reports that the city turned down a U.S. Marine request to make a television recruitment commercial in the Financial District as examples of what he called exploitation by conservatives who don't "allow the facts to get in their way.
"Shame on the extreme right," Newsom told The Chronicle. "I am sick and tired of this city being depicted as anti-military. The extreme right exploits the exception when I believe there is a predominant respect in this city for the military, vets and those serving today."
The mayor praised the Board of Supervisors for rejecting the proposed Blue Angels flight ban by Supervisor Chris Daly late last month, and he said the Marines "were offered multiple locations" in the city to shoot their commercial before they ended up selecting the Marin County site of Kirby Cove close by the Golden Gate Bridge.
Citing the proposed Blue Angels ban, Newsom said he thought that the issue of safety - which Daly cited when making the case for his ban - was a valid one to raise in the wake of the death of a member of the famed flight demonstration team in a crash earlier this year. Since the team was established in 1946, Daly said 26 of its members had died in crashes.
But Newsom said initiatives such as the proposed Blue Angels flight ban play into the hands of conservative commentators

B.S.
If it quacks like a duck, it’s a duck, despite it’s protestations.
General Frank Hummel shouldn’t have diverted the rockets.
Even the liberals like the Blue Angels. I overheard people today criticizing Bush’s Iraq policy in one breath, and reacting to the Angels like excited little kids in the next. Genuine military haters are actually pretty rare, even here.
They should buzz closer.
When they start hollering this loud, you know you’re getting close to the target.
Yeah, Newsom, just like you rejected the USS Iowa tie-up in San Francisco, you pinko scum. Ban gun ownership, ban the military, ban American history and give free sex-change operations to city employees.
You are a real American, alright. POS.
“Shame on the extreme right,” Newsom told The Chronicle. “I am sick and tired of this city being depicted as anti-military. The extreme right exploits the exception when I believe there is a predominant respect in this city for the military, vets and those serving today.”
Oh really, Mr. Newsom?
Perhaps a quick read of this article will refresh your memory:

Deal with it.

Nice pic!
Good Ol’ Mayor Gastric Nuisance.. sigh .. He’s shameless.
where’s a FRank Jordan when ya need him? Oh that’s right , in the shower. :-)
The Blue Angels will have a special formation when they fly over San Fransissysco —
The Missing Fag Formation.
I’ve seen so many airhead liberals state “We are the REAL conservatives!”
To which I reply- at least they admit “conservative = good”, which is clearly implied in their claim.
Gavin Newsome, you are the High Priest of Modern Soddom and Gomorrah, that earthquake cannot come soon enough.....
Great picture, submariner!
Does my mmemory play games with me? Did the City Council of San Francisco declare the city a military free zone, or did it not? If it did, does that not close the discussion?
They need to fence in all these degenerates in San Fransicko... get the military and all the good people out before the 8.0 hits and it slides into the sea.
How do you ask a man to be the last one to die for the ungrateful?
If Bush is the stupid evil genius that the Angry Left believes he is, no doubt he's had Dick Cheney order a "cutout" added to the program of the ballistic missile defense site in Alaska that would allow North Korea to nuke the bastards. Then we can rebuild San Francsico and ship Americans in.
“We support the military. We just don’t want them in our city.”
Pure 100% Bull cocka. What a liar, everyone knows san fran is sick.
Umm...Gavin? You might wish to check with the people who elected you first. They have different ideas.
Him and Shep would make a lovely couple.
Oh, I know there are probably people there that like watching the planes. Like people enjoy watching a woman walk a tightrope. They ooh and aah and enjoy the entertainment. Doesn’t mean they respect the intent and purpose of the military, though, just because someone likes an air show.
60% of the voters in SF want to ban military recruiting in schools.
Proposition I/College Not Combat
Anti military actions by city government reflect a "Military Free Zone" attitude but I don't think they actually voted on that specific designation.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - August 2005. The USS Iowa joined in battles from World War II to Korea to the Persian Gulf. It carried President Franklin Roosevelt home from the Teheran conference of allied leaders, and four decades later, suffered one of the nation's most deadly military accidents. Veterans groups and history buffs had hoped that tourists in San Francisco could walk the same teak decks where sailors dodged Japanese machine-gun fire and fired 16-inch guns that helped win battles across the South Pacific.
Instead, it appears that the retired battleship is headed about 80 miles inland, to Stockton, a gritty agricultural port town on the San Joaquin River and home of California's annual asparagus festival.
Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., a former San Francisco mayor, helped secure $3 million to tow the Iowa from Rhode Island to the Bay Area in 2001 in hopes of making touristy Fisherman's Wharf its new home.
But city supervisors voted 8-3 last month to oppose taking in the ship, citing local opposition to the Iraq war and the military's stance on gays, among other things.
"If I was going to commit any kind of money in recognition of war, then it should be toward peace, given what our war is in Iraq right now," Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi said.
At least a 10.2
Newsom’s posing as the Mayor heading a pro-military city government for Fleet Week in the same way that Arnold turns into a right-winger in his speeches at California Republican Party events. Then he reverts to his normal RINO self.
Hey Mayor Dipstick you ran ALL of the military bases out of the Bay. Lost thousands of good jobs. Have hundreds of acres of taxpayers built facilities sitting empty - except for occasional use by the Mythbusters. Then every year you wank about the Blue Angels.
I will not even drive through what used to be one of the most beautiful locations on the Earth because you and your ilk have turned it into a cesspool.
If only Mason and Goodspeed weren’t so damn good at their jobs....
So that’s what it looked like close up. We watched from Pt. Richmond today with binoculars.
Libs will never respect our military.
And they hate the sight of our Flag.
Thanks for the link. I live here and even I didn't know about this quote:
As Supervisor Chris Daly so forthrightly put it, "I am sad to say I am not proud of the history of the United States of America since the 1940s." That's an awful lot of ground to write off, but there you have it.
Of what country? Iran? North Korea? Myanmar?
We honor the soldiers in typical left wing fashion: by spitting on them.
BALONEY....I do even remember what it was like in the 60’s returning from SEA....
Gruesome Newsome mentions that 26 Blue Angels have been killed in accidents since they were founded in 1946.
To my knowledge, not a single civilian was killed in any of those crashes, correct? Therefore, his lame argument about public safety is bogus.
If the shoe fits, etc., etc.
Oh please after their Folsom Street Parade, why doesn’t the city climb into the cess pool where they belong.
Then stop being anti-military.
“Here in San Francisco, we stand firmly behind our military men and women...and we’re always ready to offer them a reacharound while we’re at it.”
OOPS ... did a search. Guess not. What a disappointment.
