Haggard’s Escort Alleges That Craig Visited Him Too
the moderate voice ^ | 10-7-07 | Joe Gandelman

Posted on 10/07/2007 1:19:40 PM PDT by AdamSelene235

Question: What’s harder to get rid of than a cold? Answer: The Republicans getting rid of Senator Larry Craig.

It’s a story with (wide stance) legs. And a new allegation:

The male escort responsible for the downfall of Christian evangelist leader Ted Haggard is now alleging that embattled Senator Larry Craig also came to see him.

While promoting his new book during a radio interview with KNWQ-AM in Palm Springs Wednesday night, Mike Jones hesitated from making the allegation on the air.

Management for the radio station says Jones told them he would reveal something about Idaho Senator Larry Craig on the “Bulldog Bill Feingold Show.”

While he hesitated doing so on the air, a NewsChannel 3 camera was rolling when he made the accusation during a commercial break.

Feingold asked whether the Senator had seen Jones in a hotel room.

Jones responded, “No, he came to see me.”

Jones then added, “His travel records to Denver have been documented. That’s what I wanted to say.”

NewsChannel 3 asked Senator Craig’s office to comment on the allegations that Craig came to Denver to see Jones, who calls himself a gay escort.

Craig’s office said in response, “Mike Jones’ allegations are completely false.”

An allegation that will prove to be true? Or an allegation made to capitalize on a big story? No matter what, it remains an allegation.

But the case of Craig and the GOP is starting to resemble the classic comedy movie, “What About Bob.”

In that film, a psychiatrist played by Richard Dreyfus can’t get rid of his patient, played by Murray. Each time he thinks it’s over and he’s gotten rid of him, he shows up. And as the patient gets stronger, the psychiatrist gets weaker.

In case you’ve been on Mars — or visiting the Minneapolis airport restroom where Craig was arrested which has become a big tourist attraction (are pay toilets in its future?) — Craig, who pleaded guilty to disorderly bathroom conduct, had first said he would resign. But then he changed his mind about resigning and said he would wait to see what happened in his effort to try to get his guilty plea withdrawn. The judge said no so now Craig changed his mind about resigning if he lost in court and says he’ll stick out it out for the remainder of his term.

“As I continued to work for Idaho over the past three weeks here in the Senate, I have seen that it is possible for me to work here effectively,” Craig said in a statement. “I will continue my effort to clear my name in the Senate Ethics Committee - something that is not possible if I am not serving in the Senate.”

…..”I believe the best thing for him to do is keep his word,” said Sen. John Ensign of Nevada, chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee.

“It’s embarrassing for the Senate, it’s embarrassing for his party,” Ensign said.

Other GOP senators agreed. “He ought to keep his word,” said Sen. Tom Coburn of Oklahoma. And Sen. Norm Coleman of Minnesota said, “I thought the original decision was the right thing to do.”

(“Keeping his word”? Isn’t that asking Craig to do something politicians don’t do? )

The betting now is that GOPers will try to force Craig out via Senate Ethics Committee hearings, but that vote can’t lead to his expulsion — only censure – and there are no signs Craig intends to leave before he intends to leave.

Meanwhile, Craig’s decision to dig in his heels (versus tapping his foot three times which got him into trouble at the airport) has thrown the GOP in Idaho into a state of dismay:

“A lot of Republicans in Idaho think they need to sit down on a good shrink’s couch right now,” said Tracy Lotz, a vice-chairman of the state Republican Party until last year. “We’re in shock.”

Unaccustomed to political relevance, Idaho has endured more than a month of political parody - and that was before Craig provided new material by saying he would stay in office, after all.

Some profess a respect for Craig for showing an indigenous “moxie” in telling off the national Republicans who tried to force him out, and some insist he has done nothing wrong. Yet it is also clear from interviews with people across the state that Craig has lost considerable support as he attempts to finish out his term.

Many people say his repeated revision of his plans to serve and not serve has served only himself and has ruined his credibility.

“He’s using politics, and that’s not really what his roots are,” said Jim Warren, superintendent of the Midvale School District, where Craig, 62, attended a one-room schoolhouse until he was in the seventh grade. “People here really pride themselves on keeping their word.”

Right now the outlook is for Craig to remain with his name still in the headlines as the committee hearings unfold. Craig might also be expected to take some strong political stand or make some comments that help him be more known again as a Republican politician versus someone who hurriedly left a stall without flushing when a police credential was flashed at him.

One theory is that Craig and his associates believe he has nothing to lose if he stays. His state will surely vote for a Republican to succeed him, no matter whether it’s one who is appointed or one who follows him after his term. And, the theory goes, the jokes have run their course.

Perhaps, but the Larry Craig jokes still rage on the internet in sites such as THIS, THIS and THIS. There is even a site with the Top 10 Larry Craig Bathroom Pick Up Lines.

Craig, Haggard, Foley, Vitter, the Oral Roberts U scandal. Jeesh.

The US might not deserve the Democratic flood they're likely about to get, but the GOP sure as hell deserves to drown in it. I've never been more disgusted with the Christian right than I am right now.

Everyone has demons and human weaknesses but this is clearly above average deviance for ANY group, much less one who spouts Christian morals.

The male escort ... Mike Jones hesitated from making the allegation on the air.

Maybe I'm not with the times. What's a male escort? I've heard of female escorts where men rent a woman date to show up at (mens?) events. But, I seem to read these are just modern day names for protitutes.

Where would Mike Jones escort Craig to? Isn't Jones simply a homosexual prostitute.

The story becomes more bizarre as Bill Murray gets dragged into this story as a simile to Jones.

Indeed it is. But the "few bad apples" defense wears a little thin when this stuff happens again. And again. And AGAIN!

Hell, to my knowledge, Larry Flynt and his bottom feeders have never been found to have made an accusation like this that was false! I'm getting tired of sticking up for this crowd as essentially good and being embarassed by s**t like this over and over.

I am Catholic and yes I was disgusted, extremely. But the foibles of sick priests were an internal matter for the Church and didn't and don't threaten the philosophical direction of my country.

When the leaders of the political bloc that are a cornerstone of support for the conservative movement engage in this behavior at these disproportionate levels, I'm sorry, that's condemnable to me. And if the patience of a broken glass Republican like me is at its limit, what's an independent guy thinking right now?

We're not talking about simple adultery with these cases. Pick your headline for the past couple years: this is perversion, drugs, and illegality. If one can't live up to the ideals he espouses any better than that, they have no business leading the movement.

Honestly, aren't you sick to death of being blindsided with stories and having to make apologies for this stuff?! Call a spade a spade.

The list among Democrats appears longer. The mayors of San Francisco. Governors of New Jersey. Barney Frank. Ted Kennedy - remember "the sandwhich"?

Since you included also OR, there are worse characters among supporters of Democrats. Fore example, Lou Pearlman of the "boy band" fame who is charged with fraud and who went after young boys as stated in recent TV interviews by one guy to whom he allegedly exposed himself. Then there is the hypocrite Flynt who has been accused of perversions far greater than Craig's acts.

You have a point with Vitter, Haggard, and the Oral Roberts University. However, I think it is unfair to throw Craig and Foley into the category of the Religious Right. I could be wrong but I think Foley was more of a moderate Republican Congressman and Sen. Craig while running as a conservative (fiscal and social) was not particularily known as a Christian Conservative. So, yes, I do think we need to be more carefull to weed out hypocrites but I think a lot of the scandles are more accurately considered Republican Scandles than Christian Conservative Scandles.

Craig has nothing left to lose and everything to gain. He’s merely borrowing a leaf from the Masters; Clinton, Gerry Studds, O.J.

Simply deny you did anything wrong and tell your critics to go jump. Act accordingly and watch the rest of the world gradually fall in line. When re-election rolls around your constituents may have just gotten used to the idea. In Craig’s case at least,(unlike all the others) it actually does seem to have been “just about sex.”

Shamelessness wins.

It was Frank's gay boyfriend who was busted for running a gay bordello out of Frank's house. Frank said he didn't know it was going on and as far as I know was never busted or prosecuted in any way over the event. I'm not defending Barney just trying to set the record straight.

I hate to ask, for so many reasons, but what was the sandwich with Kennedy?

It was actually just drunken boorishness. Years ago, Kennedy & Chris Dodd cornered a waitress in a restaurant and forcibly pinned her between themselves - aka the "sandwich" - with obvious sexual connotations.

I've no love lost for either of those two wastes of flesh, but that's not really a valid counterpoint to the level of misbehavior we're talking about here.

News flash: if you're "half" of our political coalition, we are the other "half." That's sort of a mathematical necessity. And I'm sure Giuliani supporters feel real welcome in your fold right now. But no, in your eyes, the only ones being "attacked" are you self-proclaimed martyrs in the Evangelical movement.

I'm telling you: you guys can write me off as a "troll" all you wish. You can believe me when I say I would have no problem voting, in a general election, for Brownback, Huckabee, Hunter, or Tancredo, or whomever, or not. In a perfect world, my choice would be Hunter. But I possess something you apparently don't: a survival instinct, so I'm not supporting sure fire losers in a primary.

You are sewing the seeds of your own demise in whining about double standards with these lurid stories instead of forcefully comdemning the people involved and insisting on a house cleaning.

They shouldn't. At this point, I could vote for any of the Republicans on the ballot EXCEPT Rudy. I

don't have a religious test - I consider both Mitt and Fred to be members of cults, but I'm supporting Fred in the primaries at this point, and would be willing to support Mitt if he turns out to be the nominee.

I'm not a single issue guy, either. I don't like CFR, but I'll tap McCain if he's on the ballot next November. Huckabee made a fool of himself on the outside smoking ban, so I don't back him in the primary, even though he is one of the strongest supporters of Christian views.
