I think The Spectator used the loaded description of WWIII to sell the article. It sure got my attention.

“Why not intercept the ship...”?

Could be that the containers that held the Nuke material were leaky, and we could track them like a torch holder down a Mtn path at night, we could watch the entire Syrian system where all of the stuff was stored, and how robust the defenses were.

With WMD, think of a the root system of a tree, you can see the tree plainly enough, but if you want to kill it, you have to strike at the roots to get the job done.

Not to mention the fact that disposing of it in deep water would be preferable to the potential loss of it on land.

"It could not have been a transfer of chemical or biological weapons; Syria is already known to possess the most abundant stockpiles in the region."

Theirs plus Saddam's.

the old military adage comes to mind: "Those who know aren't talkin'......those who don't, won't shut-up."....no insult implied to Freepers, only to "the usual suspects". :)

The number of NoKo & other technicians killed in this raid was around 20-40 from reports made late in September.

Truly this was a very big event.

do you mean the ones still in NK who sold chia-head out in connection with the 6-ways and dismantling? I think it is entirely possible that some or even a good bit of the intel that set this whole thing in motion originated in NK.....the process there has become uncharacteristically sweet over the last few months, don’t you think?

Wasn't September 6 the same day that Russian bombers were intercepted in UK airspace? I don't think we knew about the Israeli raid at the time.

A gesture intended to scare the west from dealing harshly with the terrorist nations of Syria and Iran?

Good recap of what we pretty much already know, otherwise this piece is just more idle speculation because nobody is talking yet...

I really don't know what the he!! happened, but I can tell you one thing for sure. I'd be pi$$ off if I bought $750 million of equipment from a vendor, and the damn stuff didn't work as advertised.

Not only do we own the night, we also own Syrian and Persian AD systems. And by definition, your's too Pootie Poot.

Soon the excrement will hit the oscillator...in a big way.

How do they figure?

Just a guess, of course. But the article is careful to mention 'least likely' events. What about a more likely event? Like, what if the cargo was a real live, North Korean, nuclear warhead and what if, during the raid, it had gone off? Then, with Israeli jets in the air - you know what that would have looked like. Assad and Ahmadinnerjacket would have retaliated, plus who knows what else would have happened.

We came so close to World War Three that day

Wasn't "World War Three" the "Cold War," the war Reagan won?

We are currently in the midst of World War IV.

If they were tracking a high stakes nuclear cargo, why not intercept it on the high seas and not wait until it is unloaded and dispersed.

This part of the story does not make sense.

I had the same thought...the ship just simply
‘disappeared”...a rogue wave hit the ship...

If you were conducting a drug sting, would you arrest the lowly runner selling it or wait until it reached the head honcho?

If Isreal destroyed the cargo while it was still at sea, then Isreal would’ve deprived itself of a good reason to demonstrate the worthlessness of Syria’s air defense system.

While the Syrians would like nuclear weapons, the North Korean technology was not very good as evidenced by their own nuclear fizzle. Besides Syria is a virtual puppet state for Iran, who has its own highly advanced nuclear program. The dirty bomb scenario seems more plausible. Whatever happened probably saved the world from a nuclear conflict in the Middle East.

To avoid the mountain of lies about where it was going. There are enough idiots in this world, that if the shipment was destroyed at sea and Syria denied knowing anything about it, the idiots would believe it, or at least give Syria the benefit of the doubt. Also, why give Syrians who work on these nuclear programs the idea that they'll get enough warning to get away to safety if their activities are detected? Much better to leave the whole lot of them (i.e. those that survived, probably mostly in other locations) the idea that if they keep working in this business, they could be killed or horribly maimed and irradiated at any second.

It was important for them to learn that their detection 'eyes' are useless. It was important that the shipment got to it's destination so that they couldn't claim innocence = and that Israel and or the US could track anything they do and could wipe out anything anywhere in their country and be gone before they even knew it. It was important to let them know they are toothless.

And at the same time, Iran and NK got the same message.

It maybe that the operation deterred a disastrous nuclear attack on Israel or ? = which could have set the world on fire.

It may be that we are DAMNED fortunate Al Gore or John Kerry are not president - and we damn well better be sure clinton doesn't get back to the WH.

Some of us said it before, and it bears repeating: We cannot again get hung up on one issue. which takes our eye off the ball.

You can be sure that the strategy that worked so well for the democrats last election = Misdirecting ALL the focus to THE BORDER - is going to be used again. Enough republicans swallowed the bait to put them in power. Let's not get fooled again.

The border is a top issue - but will be a mute issue if we don't win the WOT.
