Is this because the National Enquirer and the Weekly World News found the documents to be fakes and the sources unreliable?

rather had to go to the NYT, the Weekly World News did not find it credible.
Rather did a number of drugs “in the name of journalistic research”. He claims that he got things like heroin for his research from the Houston police department.
If I recall, the AP ran with the same story the same week and did just as much denial of any controvesy but it has been forgotten as Rather has been vocal about “fake but accurate”.

- The only thing we have to thank Rather for happened in 1995 when he asked for, and got, Connie Chung’s scalp over her attempt to supplant him as the anchor on the Oklahoma City bombing story. Before then, it looked like the sneaky little rat was in line to take over the evening news and after that she never worked long anywhere else.
IMHO, Dan Rather is a “has been” that never was!
I always felt like he was the neighbor who'd rather be getting online looking up pics of guys in women's clothing.
