Air America Launches Nationwide Atheism Program
CNSNews.com ^ | October 08, 2007 | Nathan Burchfiel

Posted on 10/08/2007 1:54:05 AM PDT by Hillarys Gate Cult

The liberal talk radio network Air America announced this week it will launch a nationwide show focusing on atheism. The first national show will feature Christopher Hitchens, author of "God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything."

The Freethought Radio Program, hosted by the co-presidents of the Freedom From Religion Foundation, has been airing on Air America's Madison, Wis., affiliate since April 2006.

On Saturday, Oct. 6, the show will begin airing on 14 other affiliates from Palm Springs, Fla., to Eugene, Ore., and on XM Satellite radio.

"You can turn on the radio or TV 24/7 to be preached at," Annie Laurie Gaylor, co-president of the FFRF, said in a statement. "This is one hour a week of the public airwaves that offers an alternative."

Gaylor said the program "offers irreverent views, news, music and interviews," including a regular news feature called "Theocracy Alert."

Peter Sprigg, vice president for policy at the Family Research Council, noted that atheists have the same free speech rights as all Americans. Yet, as he told Cybercast News Service, "I doubt atheist radio will be any more popular than liberal radio."

"Conservative talk radio dominates, as do Christian radio programs," he said. "I don't think Dr. James Dobson, with Focus on the Family, has anything to worry about from atheist radio."

Sprigg further said that liberals often claim that one can be a Christian and a liberal at the same, but, in his view, the step to promote atheism on the airwaves is indicative perhaps that liberalism is incompatible with traditional religious belief.

Laughing at these "people's" stupidity doesn't even seem to be enough anymore.

AAR just lost all four Hawaii affiliates with no fanfare or news about it.

I'm an atheist and you couldn't pay me to listen to this.

I don't have the time to listen to whiney libs braying about how they're persecuted because 90+% of the population believes in God and they don't. I imagine it will have a lot of call-ins from people who were "given dirty looks" and "weren't invited to social events" and other such horrors because of their heroic non-belif.

This is probably being put on only so the rest of AA's lineup seems less boring.

I am ashamed of Madison, where I was born and which is right next door to Middleton, where I was raised. Middleton was chosen this past summer by Money Magazine as the best place in USA to live and work.
Guess they missed the contamination of Air America on the local airwaves, huh????

The thing I don’t understand...if God doesn’t exist, why would you want to waste your time talking about Him? Oh wait, that’s because 15% of atheists actually don’t believe and the other 85% are emotionally mad and angry at God and Christianity.

They are highly sensitive about what they consider to be a fantasy. So much so they devote a lot of energy towards eradicating it from the American landscape.

We already have college radio for that, and I think most Americans would rather be preached at than preached against. And I thought Air America Radio was supposed to be out of business. Will somebody tell me what's going on, inasmuch as they've never broadcast from a city where I could pick up their signal?

Not long ago, I was driving through a part of Texas that had very little radio reception. I finally ended up with a signal from some station that was airing a repeat broadcast of some air America program.

While the program itself was stupid beyond belief, two things struck me. One was that they had very few callers, and the other was that they had very few paying sponsors. Most of their breaks were filled with public service announcements.

This is actually kindof a confirmation of my belief that truly religious people are grounded in conservatism, and athiests are more likely to favor liberal leftist beliefs.

I won’t go into this in depth now, but I do believe a very good case could be made for this concept.

Q: How can you make a small fortune with Air America Radio?

A: Start with a large one.

As near as I can gather, one of the Hawaii stations they listed only carried Al Franken, and he left at the start of the year. The others appear to have switched to only local programming.

I have a love/hate relationship with Christopher Hitchens. I’m wondering how he’ll do. While atheist, he is very articulate and powerful with his pro-war views.

I’m pretty sure that both members of the Air America audience are vehemently anti-war. I wonder if they’ll spend their time cursing him out about the war instead of kvetching about atheism...?

AAR was saved in the same way it started, by liberals with more money than sense. The latest “save” was a shell game to screw their creditors, and it worked. The bankruptcy judge let them get away with it.

Anyone who became an AAR creditor deserved what they got.

I know what you mean. Until recently I would grudgingly listen to him and occasionally read his material. Smart guy.

My attitude changed during his last visit to the Michael Medved show. He stated twice that Jesus never existed, never walked the face of the earth. Also, the title of his latest book, about Mother Teresa is "Missionary Position", a cheap shot to the memory of an incredible woman.

I see no reason to listen or read any further material from this man.

>>I thought A America was long gone.

In many places it is. In New England at one point it was
on in: Boston (2 stations), Western MA (3 small
stations—Springfield, Greenfield, Northampton), New Haven CT, Providence RI, Brattleboro VT, Burlington VT, and Portland ME.

Now it’s only on the western MA stations and Brattleboro.
Dec 21 marks the first anniversary of it leaving Boston,
and the libs are still trying, in vain, to get it back.

It has been dropped nationwide in many cities (San
Diego may be next, with KLSD—those are the call
letters believe it or not!) or moved to much
weaker frequencies. Can’t sell ad time, can’t get ratings.

There are sites and yahoo groups devoted to getting it back on in cities like Akron, OH; Boston, MA; New Haven,
and more. So far such efforts have not worked. Stations
have dumped prog talk for sports, Spanish (in Boston),
and even conservative talk (Columbus).

The folks at NonStopRadio.com can’t seem to get the year
straight. It’s only 2007, folks:

>>RED ALERT: SAN DIEGO
KLSD AM IS SCHEDULED TO BE FLIPPED BY 10/15/2008 (sic)!
Several reliable sources place the loss of KLSD in San Diego anywhere from now through Monday, October 15th. More must be done, and must be done immediately!

I think they actually do have an alleged show about religion on Sundays...just checked the AAR site and saw info about it. Note the last part:
>>State of Belief is based on the proposition that religion has a positive and healing role to play in the life of the nation. The show explains and explores that role by illustrating the vast diversity of beliefs in America – the most religiously diverse country in the world – while exposing and critiquing both the political manipulation of religion for partisan purposes and the religious manipulation of government for sectarian purposes.

I wonder if they're talking about Islam or Christianity in that respect?

It is a nice sounding theory that when you separate the Christian Church from the state, you get stability, but it does not pass the common sense test.

For instance, I know it is the first words out of any atheist mouth when you try to talk with them about Jesus, “Explain the Inquisition,” and “Look how evil the church was!” and “Look what they did in the name of Jesus!”

It is true that about 500 years ago, Christian fanatics killed about 10,000 people over a 100 year time period (about 100/year) in the name of the Roman Catholic church. It is a shame on the record of an organization that claims to be promoting the ministry of Christ. Now compare this record to the example of the countries that have officially done away with religion. To the countries that have outright banned religion and imprisoned those who try to practice it (the ultimate test of the theory of separation of church and state).

Yes, I am talking about Communist countries. In the Communist Manifesto, Engel and Marx declared, “Communism abolishes all religion.” In my father’s lifetime, the numbers of people that officially atheist countries have murdered in the name of no-religion is staggering; the USSR slaughtered 20 million, China slaughtered 10 million, Communist Cambodia slaughtered 2 million, Communist North Korea has/continues to murder untold numbers, Communist Cuba has/continues to murder untold numbers, the list goes on.

The grand total is over 50 million dead in the last 80-year time span (over 600,000/year). Even comparing the worst time of “Christian Persecution” to an average time of a just one country that has officially and forcefully separated church and state, the conclusion is obvious: Christianity has a huge calming influence on government.

Pope Benedict XVI said it in his speech in Regensburg - violence in the name of religion is inherently irrational (as well as evil).

Atheists and narcissistic people like Elton John, love to hark back to the dark days of Christian sectarian violence, but it is Christian Europe with its underpinnings of Judaic law that brought forth western civilization. The bad is infinitesimal compared to the good in western civilization. We had better resolve to defend it.

The death of Christianity would bring forth the worst in humanity including gay people like Elton John having no protections whatsoever. He would be the first to be singled out for extermination if his idiotic wishes were to come true.

Let me tell you a secret and that is; THERE ARE NO ATHEISTS. In their heart, every atheists really believes in God. It is a part of the human condition imposed by our creator. Professed atheists always reveal their true beliefs when under fire — I am talking about soldiers in the trenches and those that witnessed what happened on 911. They all found God. There are no atheists — those that profess to be such are simply lying and will continue to do so until the heat is applied.

Smart does not make one consider wisdom.

Agreed. It doesn't matter how much horsepower you have under the hood if you aren't steering correctly.

Case in point: Andrea Dworkin. I read some of her writing years ago in which she claimed that heterosexual sex was violence perpetrated by men against women in an effort to humiliate and dominate them. I felt mentally contaminated by her twisted reasoning. I took the news of her death with some relief, as if some sadistic dictator had died.
