Jailed '93 WTC bomber claims he's now a Christian (new updates)
New York Daily News ^ | October 12, 2007 | James Gordon Meek

WASHINGTON - Muslim terrorist Ramzi Yousef once bombed the World Trade Center for Allah, but now he purports to have found Jesus and converted to Christianity, according to new reports.

The Daily News recently learned that Yousef has shaved his beard, stopped reading the Muslim holy book, the Koran, and now eats pork, which is forbidden in Islam.

Yousef, the nephew of 9/11 mastermind Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, was convicted and is serving a life term for detonating a truck bomb under the twin towers in 1993 and plotting to blow up U.S.-bound airliners over the Pacific.

But since his capture in 1995, the Muslim extremist has given up his religion, CBS' "60 Minutes" will report on Sunday.

The revelation came when the TV news show was allowed unprecedented access to the Supermax federal prison in Florence, Colo., which houses hardened terrorists such as Yousef, Al Qaeda hijacking plotter Zacarias Moussaoui, shoe bomber Richard Reid and "Unabomber" Theodore Kaczynski.

Told of the alleged religious conversion, former New York federal prosecutor Andrew McCarthy wondered, "Does Christianity get a vote" on whether to accept him?

McCarthy, who put Yousef on the stand as a witness in the terrorism prosecution of the "Blind Sheik," Omar Abdel-Rahman, said the Pakistani thug has lived a "bad life of barbarity."

"It could be sincere. On the other hand, the Prophet Muhammed said war is deceit," he said.

Robert Hood, who served as warden from 2002 to 2005, told CBS that Yousef has a "Charlie Manson look," referring to the cult leader. If Yousef is playing Christian convert, "He's playing a game with someone."

"60 Minutes" also interviewed corrections officer Barbara Batulis, who said that when news of the 9/11 attacks spread among the terrorist prisoners, "We had a lot of them jump up and down,...scream and yell and clap and they were very excited."

The wardens also have administered 900 force-feedings on other Al Qaeda terrorists who went on repeated hunger strikes.

I know this has been discussed around here, but this story adds some detail to the Yousef info (in bold above) that seems to give it some credence. I'm starting to lean toward thinking that this is legitimate.

That said, even if true this obviously doesn't change the fact that he needs to spend the rest of his life in that prison (since the death penalty wasn't available).

Converted to Christianity...well, then he should be a more positive
influence in his prison environment.

"Andrew McCarthy wondered, does Christianity get a vote?"

No, Andy, we do not, nor should we. If he accepts Christ as his personal Savior that's all the vote he needs. If he doesn't, then God will deal with that at a later date.

Oh I'm well aware of that. I'm not sure what he would hope to accomplish in this case though, and I'm not aware of other Muslims going as far as eating pork as part of their taqiyya. I'm not sure what to think here, but I'm keeping an open mind.

I agree. I hope this story is true, but color me a skeptic. I've heard, just recently, of muslims pretending to convert. Lets pray that he has seriously decided to turn his life over to Christ.

If his conversion is true then he’s extremely blessed to be able to glorify the LORD in HIS mercy rather than glorifying HIS wrath. Sounds like he made a wise direction change in the path he’s walking to eternity.

We are instructed to pray for our enemies. Some of the greatest testimonies I’ve ever heard are from Japanese Christian converts after WWII. They couldn’t believe that in captivity Christians would pray FOR their captors even before being tortured and killed.

I hope for his soul he is sincere.

Whether someone has really accepted the Lord can be seen by his fruits (deeds). Muslims who convert to Christianity and live a Christian live are Christians. Think about Walid Shoebat. He was an islamic terrorist, but now he is an anti-terrorist Christian.

My wife is of Iranian birth, and was born nominally Muslim. But since 30 years she is an Evangelical Christian (although matter of factly she never was a practicing muslim but highly secular before embracing Jesus Christ).

As I understand it, he’s a nephew of Khaled Sheikh Mohammed.

Keep him in Supermax for the rest of his life.

While I wish his conversion were true, the previous warden said he had eyes like Charlie Manson.

Deception. Disinformation. Cover: Western operational terms and techniques. But, Islamic terrorists have their own terms: taqiyya (pronounced tark-e-ya) : precautionary dissimulation or deception and keeping one’s convictions secret and a synonymous term, kitman: mental reservation and dissimulation or concealment of malevolent intentions...

I wonder if he thinks we should have taken a vote before letting Paul into the “religion”. After all, he killed a lot of Christians before his conversion.

Christians everywhere should pray his conversion is genuine though, as we should pray for all to convert. After all, life in prision is nothing compared to an eternity in heaven (or hell).

He may be a genuine convert, or he may be under the misapprehension that he will be treated more leniently if he converts.

I have read a number of prison conversion stories. Some of them are truly moving. But just because someone repents his crimes and converts and becomes a Christian and joins the Prison Fellowship and helps to convert others doesn’t mean that he is let out of jail. He still has to serve out his sentence.

There are many such cases, and that’s the way it has to be. Such genuine converts have the joy of Christ in their souls and the blessings of grace, not a get out of jail free card.

Probably, if they were let out of jail, they would not repeat their crimes, because their lives have been genuinely transformed. But too bad, they still have to serve out their sentences. God will reward them, and indeed rewards them even as they continue to live the sufferings of imprisonment, but justice must follow its course.

I don’t know if Yousef understands that. Maybe he is a genuine convert, but I’d need to see a lot more than this before I believed it.

Yep, I hope he’s sincere. It would be great.

Nonetheless, he is so dangerous, and hoped to kill 50,000 at the WTC’s in 1993, so he should never, never, ever be let out of Supermax.

And, if he IS sincere, he’ll live longer that way, because his former associates would love to kill him if it is true.

yes it does by implicit definition - including a justification for burning people alive - which was also done to William Tyndale, but the New Testament provides for nothing like that at all, in contrast. (nor should it, of course)

It’s considered OK for a muslim to kill an infidel, even if it’s another muslim

HADITH Sahih Bukhari [4:52:283] Narrated Abu Juhaifa:
I asked Ali, “Do you have the knowledge of any Divine Inspiration besides what is in Allah’s Book?” ‘Ali replied, “...we have what is written in this paper as well.” I asked, “What is written in this paper?” He replied, “...the judgment that no Muslim should be killed for killing an infidel.”

HADITH Sahih Bukhari [4:52:260] Narrated Ikrima:
Ali burnt some people and this news reached Ibn ‘Abbas, who said, “Had I been in his place I would not have burnt them, as the Prophet said, ‘Don’t punish (anybody) with Allah’s Punishment.’ No doubt, I would have killed them, for the Prophet said, ‘If somebody (a Muslim) discards his religion, kill him.’ “

HADITH Sahih Bukhari [6:61:577] Narrated ‘Ali:
I heard the Prophet saying, “In the last days (of the world) there will appear young people with foolish thoughts and ideas. They will give good talks, but they will go out of Islam as an arrow goes out of its game, their faith will not exceed their throats. So, wherever you find them, kill them, for there will be a reward for their killers on the Day of Resurrection.”

HADITH Sahih Bukhari [9:84:64] Narrated ‘Ali:
Whenever I tell you a narration from Allah’s Apostle, by Allah, I would rather fall down from the sky than ascribe a false statement to him, but if I tell you something between me and you (not a Hadith) then it was indeed a trick (i.e., I may say things just to cheat my enemy). No doubt I heard Allah’s Apostle saying, “During the last days there will appear some young foolish people who will say the best words but their faith will not go beyond their throats (i.e. they will have no faith) and will go out from (leave) their religion as an arrow goes out of the game. So, where-ever you find them, kill them, for who-ever kills them shall have reward on the Day of Resurrection.”

My opinion: he, his lawyers, and the so-called mainstream media are teaming up to push an agenda to try and make us feel sorry for him. I can't imagine how "60 Minutes" would have even learned of this unless his lawyers went out of their way to notify them.

In any event, even if it really is true, I'm not particularly moved.

I’m glad he accepted Christ as his personal savior and I look forward to spending some time in Heaven with him trying to understand him.

In the meantime, he has some Al Jazeera evangelical videos to make, and he’s got to serve his sentence.

I would hope that Brother Andrew’s ministry, Open Doors, would be given access to him and the new message of Peace could be transmitted through the moslem world.
