Question for grown-ups: Who deserves government-subsidized health insurance?
http://michellemalkin.com/ ^

Posted on 10/12/2007 10:36:22 AM PDT by WBL 1952

I received an unsolicited e-mail this week from a neighbor of the Frost family, the family held up by Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, and the entitlement expansionist Democrats. He wrote:

They’re good people. Terribly misguided, pathetically leftist buffoons, but still good people. It was a terrible accident and Bonnie is quite beat up with guilt over the events. Lots of neighbors pitched in to cook meals and help out… Bonnie works half time doing freelance editorial work and Halsey, an incredibly disorganized lovable goofball, just can’t seem to hold down a proper job or, when he’s tried, to run a proper company. He’s a millwork carpenter and does great work installing custom interior and exterior trimwork and cabinetry. He should be making great money but can’t get out of his way…

…Still, we make choices, right? They have three vehicles - a nice new volvo SUV, a Suburban, and his F250 Ford Pickup work truck, a nice house, and all four kids go to private school. Not sure where the money comes from, but they don’t make all that much. Should they be the poster child for S-CHIP? Heck no….

This Frost family seems to be better off net worth ways than the vast majority of Americans.

The Frost's own "a nice new volvo SUV, a Suburban, and his F250 Ford Pickup work truck

And THEY think THEY should be on the SCHIP program???....Hey, Frosts....sell one of your vehicles, invest the money, and use it to pay your medical insurance (and use the car insurance $$ you save, too)...

Who is entitled, due to their need, the fruits of someone else’s ability?

Only those within your own family, and anyone else you VOLUNTARILY decide to support.

A man is required to support his own family. He is also urged (NOT FORCED) to voluntarily contribute to charity.

They already qualified for the SCHIP program.

They should be the poster children for Pres. Bush’s veto. If they qualified, why is there any need to expand the program?

Who deserves government-subsidized health insurance?

What we need is more private sector business moved to the public sector where people aren't greedy empire-builders but have only selfless public good in mind. Public servants know best and act best. Ask Chavez, Castro, Putin, whoever is in charge in Myanmar.

“Freelance,” as I suspected. Sounds like she read one of those “become a medical transcriptionist” work-at-home ads. I know someone who did just that, who also had a “loveable goofball” spouse. (Too proud to punch a clock or earn a paycheck.)
I’m compassionate, but the more I hear about these people the less I sympathize. A brand new Volvo, now.
They are definitely gaming the system, extracting the max in goodies and showing the minimum of income. Probably quite legal, but nearing the level of contemptible.
If they can milk the system like that, imagine what they could be sucking out of their parents.

“This Frost family seems to be better off net worth ways than the vast
majority of Americans.”

It appears that the Frosts are just “connected” enough to get plenty
of goodies from the government and their wealthy family members.

They aren’t royalty.
But they are doing pretty good by “Average American” standards.

Oh, it's not all that hard to understand. His REPORTED income is only $45,000.

In the trades, there is a little phenomenon known as "side jobs", jobs which pay in cash and leave no paper trail. This also helps lovable goofballs like Halsey keep their taxes low by underreporting income.

When you have lots of unreported , untaxed cash income, you can afford a few luxuries...

Leftists don’t understand this concept.

Many of them just don’t see the difference between charity and forced wealth distribution.

I guess it’s because they view the government as all benevolent instead of how the founders saw it - nothing but force.

“Government is not reason; it is not eloquent; it is force. Like fire, it is a dangerous servant and a fearful master.” - George Washington

I think that only a small portion of people that are truly disabled to should get health insurance.

People who are blind, deaf, brain damaged. True disabilities.

I think that it is our responsibility to help those that truly cannot help themselves.

If they are able to work, then a portion of the salary should go towards the health insurance.

What about the disabled, really disabled? The people that truly cannot take care of themselves and have no family to provide for them. Down syndrome adults, blind people, etc.

I don’t think we should provide for healthy adults, but there is a segment of our population that cannot take care of themselves because of disabilities and I don’t think they should be left alone to fend for themselves.

He could have been bartering as well. A great kitchen carpentry job might be worth a new SUV of your choice at the local dealership--especially if the dealer is the brother-in-law of the homeowner with the new kitchen cabinets.

Are you prepared to pick up a gun and demand the money from your neighbor to help the disabled person.

If not then you are not truly compassionate, according to the libs.

They’re too cowardly to walk up to you and steal the money out of your wallet - they just empower the government, the only entity that can legally use deadly force or the threat thereof, to steal money from you.

With all the publicity they've gained, and now that they've become a tool of the Liberals, it is unfortunate that an IRS investigation into how they afford their lifestyle, and how they STILL "qualify" for taxpayer-subsidized payment for their Medical Plan is not going to happen. The result would be major mileage in the MSM about "mean-spirited Republican Right Wing Extremists trying to persecute "working class families, etc."

The potential for abuse in ALL government-run programs is evidenced by the amount of Cadillacs lined up in front of welfare offices in EVERY major urban area of this Country.

Sad, but the purchase of votes from the entitlements' crowd is rift with fraud and abuse, all at Taxapayer expense to assure a dependent-class that votes for the Socialists every election. They want their benefits to just keep on comin'.

Very, Right or Left, few people would disagree in extreme cases. (Ok maybe the Left would disagree if the person was conservative.) The issue mainly applies to the general case. If a person is capable of work, but just doesn't make enough to be able to afford cable.

That is what Charity is for, Government should not be a charity.

The main problem with charity is that it's unreliable, inconsistent and unequal. Often, the person who gets the most charity is the person who is most effecting in 'selling' his own supposed afflictions. Instead of setting up a black and white either-or situation, we should work at solving the problem with as little recourse to government as possible. The 'problem' in general being people who need help, but don't get it for whatever reason. If we can do that, this will undermine the rationale for more government programs.

This needs to be repeated loudly across America. The mentality of at least 50% of this country is that they are owed something. It ridiculous that a family with 3 vehicles and a nice house to boot, didn’t have insurance. I hope this comes back to bite the dems.

I believe you meant the law says you have to--but in the real world most folks don't obey the law here.

There is a massive underground economy, but by its very nature it is hard to measure.

Barter is a significant "tool of the trade" because the transaction is hard to trace.

If a majority of our country wanted to take care of the disabled, then that’s what we should do.

I wouldn’t fight for it if I was the only one because it would be a losing battle.

However, I stand up for the disabled.

My daughter is disabled, and she is lucky to have parents that have been able to provide for her.

I really feel for the kids and disabled adults who don’t have family to help them.

As a community, I think we should help those in need.

I have little sympathy for illegals or adults who have a healthy body and brain. I don’t think they should get healthcare.

I think that you are wrong about that. Lots of autistic kids were just locked away in institutions in the past.

We’ve made great strides in the way disabled people are treated in this country where instead of being locked away they are educated and become contributing members of our society.

What I think is amazing is how an illegal alien can get more help than a disabled legal citizen of our country gets.

My daughter is disabled. We currently get zero help from the government for her. She qualifies for free and appropriate education, but the public schools failed her.

We pay for private school with a special reading program, speech therapy, occupational therapy, and every other therapy she gets. We do not get any tax breaks for this.

We pay tons of taxes, and we don’t have enough money to pay for all of my daughter’s therapies. Insurance will only pay for 24 speech, physical, and occupational therapy sessions per year. That’s just 1 session every other week. My daughter goes to speech twice a week (and needs more).

Basically, if you pay taxes it means you make enough money to not qualify for any programs for a special needs kid.

I’m not asking for my daughter to be taken care of. However, I would prefer that my tax dollars go to take care of other disabled legal citizens and not to illegal aliens or abled bodied men/women.
