New health tax introduced in Canada (Vanity)

Posted on 10/12/2007 12:53:28 PM PDT by Maneesh

The great liberal welfare state to our north that is essentially defined by "We are not USA" and we have universal health care will soon have a health tax. The confiscatory tax rates already in place were not enough and the Liberals which won resoundingly in Ontario ran on a platform of introducing a health tax on top of the already high taxes which pay for their universal health care. This "health tax" will kick in at incomes of $25,000 / yr and higher and could be upto $4,000 / yr. So they are essentially throwing more money into a very inefficient socialist program thinking that will fix it ! They have essentially started a brand new tax and once you start it you can always increase it.

Hillary is taking notice and if you want to see our future ask anyone in Canada that has had to use their health care system for a serious issue. The sheeple in Canada have been so conditioned that there was hardly a protest for this new tax. And then they say that health care is free in Canada !!!

So they’ll pay more and STILL have to run to the US for more timely surgery.

Apparently the Canadian government has run across a short-fall, no doubt in part inspired by the Canadians who cross the south border whenever they need something taken care of urgently. So when people leave the system, you prop it up further with taxes and make it harder for them to leave by stealing their money. Brilliant!

I thought I’d mention the fact that my French friend who is working in Canada railed on their healthcare system endlessly. It’s apparently much more inefficient than even the French system—quite an accomplishment.

Whoever gave you that story garbled it completely. The health tax is $750 per year and was introduced by the Ontario Liberals in 2004. The feds have no plans for such a tax and the word is that they intend to bring in major tax cuts next year.

Your analysis about health care is “dead on”.

I thought one of the best lines in the debate in Dearborn, MI was from Guliani.. He said if we have socialized medicine in the USA, where will the Canadians go ?

Canadians have been so conditioned to “free” health care as a right that they will keep paying more taxes to keep this dinosaur alive, they are emotionally invested in it too deep.

This is not a fed tax but a health tax only in Ontario. It is yet a proposal but 2 days ago the libs won big in Ontario and so will make this law. The Ontario provincial govt will run this, not the feds who seem to have more sense with Stephen Harper in charge.

At $4000 a year you could pay for your own private plan!

There's a double-whammy in this. Not only is this a new tax, Canada has one of the world's most expensive tax collection systems per unit of revenue.

The United States, in contrast, has one of the lowest cost tax collection systems per unit of revenue (which doesn't mean it couldn't and shouldn't be even lower). The Canadian tax collection system (both Provincial and federal) continues to rise in cost.

When the Canadians elected to shift their revenue collection apparatus from the private sector (patients paying insurers, et al), they added to the total costs incurred to provide medical care.

Folks who propagandize for the Canadian system (and for the one like it they propose here) always neglect to include in the "administrative cost" column the costs of collecting revenues to run the system.

Ontario's action here shows that the brain infection has continued to spread.

Shortly, once the cost of collecting tax exceeds the value of the revenue received to pay for medical care, the whole place is going to have to be shut down. We should begin preparing ourselves to repel refugees from the Great White North.

Time to build a wall Fur Shur.

I've read a lot of stupid about Canadian health care on FR. This isn't the worst , just the latest , as in 3 years late.

Oct 07, 2007 Opposition leaders have questioned why McGuinty – whose decision to bring in the tax broke a key 2003 election promise not to raise taxes – still plans to keep it in place given that the province is running a surplus.

There are, interestingly enough, private medical insurance plans to cover medical care not provided in their universal health care system.

That would include dentistry, boob jobs, face lifts (hear that Nancy, that sort of thing is not free), and probably all that other stuff insurers and HMOs in the US won't cover either.

Turns out the Canadian "universal health care system" really isn't universal, and doesn't cover things that are important to your career.

That is an excellent and often neglected point. We are talking about billions of dollars in collection and the govt certainly will not do it efficiently. The base argument is “should be give over this key sector of the economy to the govt”. In Canada, the libs have essentially won the argument and we are perilously close to that same situation in the USA. Perhaps this new tax in Ontario will wake up some people here.

The Red Tories proposed even more health care spending and they got walloped.

This is on the way to America nobody who is paying attention can deny it. It maybe disguised or obfuscated with nice terminology but the reality is that we already have essentially a one payer system. Ask any MD or health care practitioner and they will tell you that insurance payments are based right off Medicare or within a small percent of it. Medicare (read the Government)currently dictates pricing.

This is only one more step in Sovietization of America. I wish I had confidence that the people will rise up and stop this abomination but that would take alot more than what we are doing. Even though we have an armed populace we will not defend our principles, they will continue to erode over time. The tax-man commeth for your money then for you. They have already defined you and your beliefs as hateful and radical. They convince more and more people each day of it. I hope Im wrong but some fights just can't be won playing nice. To dramatic? maybe but I can't stop that feeling that's its the beginning of the end.

There’s enough stupidity in the healthcare system as it stands- no need to make stuff up. I never claimed that our system is not completely meritless, only that this particular story is not true.

A lot of the evidence does point towards your conclusion. One option is to give up in despair but I have just chosen to die fighting socialism in my own way. It is never ending education of the population because if America falls so does the rest of the free world. This is the last hope of the free world and we have to do whatever it takes to keep the flame of freedom alive here.
