DENVER It wasn't a reckless obsession with liquor, drugs and gunplay that made the late Hunter S. Thompson the undisputed king of Gonzo journalism, his wife says. Instead, it was old-fashioned principles such as working hard and telling the truth, enlivened by the glee Thompson took from learning and from being right.

After his death, Anita Thompson said, she got stacks of e-mails and letters from young people who thought they could duplicate his success by mimicking his infamous consumption.
"They wrote me these letters about drinking bottles of Wild Turkey and doing grams of cocaine," said Thompson, a tall, outgoing, slender woman with shoulder-length dirty blond hair and a ready smile who munched on a salad during an interview at a Denver hotel. "And I realized, OK, I need to correct that."

As your attorney, I advise let it rest.
I just channeled him, and he says:
“Do as I say, not as I do. I mean, do as my wife says, not as I did. I mean, well, you get the picture.”
The check is not in the mail.
His incredible substance abuse had finally gotten the better of him by the end. A lot of his writing for ESPN was barely coherent.
In his prime though he was very good though.
He was a moron who killed himself because Bush got re-elected.
No offense to you, but yawn.
I’m not faulting you for posting this at all, but I could care less about this schmuck.
She needed to correct something, or she hoped to augment her income?
It’s actually a good thing. Thompson started out as a disciplined journalist who got caught up in the time and place.
I didn't post this for caring about Thompson or his widow but for the message that you have to apply yourself and work to succeed at anything.
In the words of Bluto said to Flounder (John Belushi in Animal House) -
“My advice to you, is drink heavily!”
When I was in Senior High, I had bought one of his new works, Hells Angels, and I thought that he was pretty cool.
But the downward spiral was pretty dramatic.
What a waste of a life.
Is this any way to remember a Cold War era US Air Force Veteran?
Or, more importantly from the AP's point of view, from being left.
Decimom, I make no value judgement about your post at all. You should be able to post anything you like, for whatever reason you like. I made my thoughts of this guy known, but I really don’t have a negative opinion regarding you for posting this.
Thanks for allowing me the opportunity to make that clear.
Okay, that does it! I will! LOL (DoughtyOne leaves keyboard for another brewsky, not telling poster that he intended to have a number of others before the sun comes up.)
=( :->)-
Hells Angels is a great read. When Thompson wasn’t making crap up about Nixon he could really write.
No problem. Just want my intentions to be more clear lest they be misunderstood.
“I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence or insanity to anyone, but they’ve always worked for me.”
As long as you sing some version of the lyrics to “Louie, Louie” while consuming.
;-)
Good choice. Any lyric is as good as any other.

Didja ever notice that liberal "truth tellers" only tell the truth about their political opposites.......and that they have no truths to spout when it comes to the crimes of their political soulmates?
Didja ever notice that their worship of 'free speech' comes to a screeching halt when their political opposites would like to say something........that there's always a valid reason like 'stopping hate' to support the suppression of said speech?
Didja ever notice they can't wait longer than one week for a military action to be successful........but they'll wait decades for a welfare action (i.e. War on Poverty) and support it regardless of how ineffective it is?
Yeah, he was a good writer in spite of his habits, not because of them. At least he was until his habits dragged him down.

Say what you will about the demented genius of Hunter S., but he will always have a place in my life, and was certainly an early influence on me. Part of my very twisted sense of humor (and not a small part of my twisted sense of reality) can be directly attributed to Hunter and his Songs of the Doomed...
You’ll need another fifty years before Hunter thomson can be truly appreciated.
"Freedom is something that dies unless it's used."
He killed himself because he had completely ruined his health and his popularity had fallen away. Like Hemmingway at the end, he could barely write a sentence that pleased him.
Let’s face it. This guy racked his brain with drugs and drink and hadn’t written anything halfway good for the last 30 years of his life. I suppose he wrote some clever stuff when younger but crazy old druggies have zero appeal
Not to mention the Left, which he had spent his life defending, turned on him. I think he was more of a libertarian. Drugs, cigarettes, politically incorrect speech, guns (oh, my did he love guns). He knew that he had fighting for the "wrong side" by the end of his life. He was obviously anti-Bush but he was really feeble in defending people like Clinton.
