Have we, citizens of the republic, gotten to the point that we can no longer, as eloquently and truthfully as Gen. Sanchez did, state our views for fear that someone else will take them “out of context”? If so, we are indeed doomed!”

True words, ImpBill.

I’m sure if General Sanchez had taken the opposing view, he would be the darling of the forum for that reason alone.

And also you shouldn't be disheartened because Sanchez commanded for a year - three years ago! IF things were going badly NOW you'd be hearing about that, not a speech.

It's scary that the American people (not you I mean the sheeple) will be demoralized by a speech when the war obviously is going well now.

Retired because he COULDN`T GET THE JOB DONE !

No, he retired because of the Abu Ghraib scandal. He has admitted that was the reason many times in the past.

He should have given them comments involving the press. The moment he suggested the war is a disaster, he wrote the headlines.

Stupid. A GO who can’t handle the press, in today’s environment, in not qualified.

I have purposely, to date, on this thread, not stated my views on the good General's views.

But I will go out on a limb here and state, unequivocally, that I find little in what he has said that I can find serious disagreement.

But the point is that he has both the inalienable and earned right to his views and more so to state them!

Well I guess you, as he, are certainly welcome to your opinion.

Sad we (the Republic) has gotten to this Orwellian point.

Have a great day!

By the bye, he is a retired GO, with the same rights as all citizens, including you. It was a right, he put on hold for a long time while wearing the uniform. As I asked another detractor, from what the citizen Sanchez said, are we who serve simply to get disappeared after we complete our honorable service?

Inferring that he should have never been a "GO" begs me to silently question your bonifides, other than just being another citizen stating their view, on this forum? Rhetorical question!

I didn’t want to say this earlier because of all the negative comments hurled General Sanchez’s way, and it would have been lost among all the negative comments.

I worked with then “Major” Sanchez in the same office (DCSIM) here in Panama. I never met a more kinder, intelligent, and finer gentleman than this man. He never once embarrassed his soldiers by scolding them in front of anybody. (If he did scold someone...I’ll never know.) He treated everybody, from the lowest to the highest, with great respect. He was always in a positive mood and had a wonderful sense of humor. He made everyone around him feel good.

At that time, he was thinking about maybe leaving the army and going back to Texas and do something else. He didn’t have his sights on becoming general. He wasn’t power hunger.

I don’t know what happened after that. He must have met up with a mentor who convinced him to stay on, and that was it. I think I know who his mentor was; but since I’m not sure, I won’t speculate. The next thing I knew, he was a general in Iraq.

Anyway, I feel very lucky to have worked with him.

He also had a lovely wife, and his beautiful 2-year old little girl could already read. Talk about smarts.

He couldn’t get the job done? Well, that is not surprising considering everyone in our military is constantly being maligned by the Media, the Democratic party, lawyers, moveon.org and many many other entities.

It’s great that General Sanchez hit the media hard but because he should have known that part would not be reported he left open the new old slogan for the media,”what is winning?”. WE ARE WINNING NOW. WE WERE NOT WINNING UNDER GENERAL SANCHEZ.

Wrong, you`re going with the flow in this thread.

Sanchez was the Green zone General ok, get that?

Sanchez`s policy was disaster, unsecured supply lines/

convoys with non-combat troops, sitting ducks,

being blown to bits by ieds, a non-agressive plan

to destroy roving bands of thugs and militias, deciding

virtually the day he took command it was hopeless.

Come on, get real. Was it any wonder he was placed in

limbo, not given another position and certainly not

another star?

Get real you guys. Sour grapes Sanchez can go join all

the other luminaries like Clark, Zinni,Hoar,Batiste,

Newbold, etc. The rogues gallery emasculated Generals

who have no concept of going for the jugular.

Please don’t confuse the issue. Yes, he has the RIGHT to give a speech and say whatever he wants. But NO! Not everything that is legal is wise.

No one here has said he did anything illegal, or that his actions should be illegal. Many, including myself, have said his actions were stupid. And being stupid about the press & politics should disqualify you from becoming a GO. A General who shoots his mouth off to the press can create significant problems that others in the military then need to clean up.

My apologies to General Sanchez. I took yesterday’s reports at face value and assumed he was shilling for a future Clinton administration.

We could continue this, but alas, I fear to no satisfactory end.

He is a LTG (US Army Retired.

He is today, a citizen just like you and I, no longer bound by his oath, giving up some of the civilian freedoms he and others fought and bleed to insure.

Not only do I disagree with your premise, I beg other retired General Officers with his experience to step up to the plate and state their opinions. I may not agree with them, but that is my choice, as yours. But to say what you imply is indeed folly.

Have you read, re-read, and contemplated on "what" he said? Keeping it all in context?

Sir, there are many of us patriotic "old soldiers" out here that absolutely will find no fault in the message contained in the speech.

You may disagree, but please don't question, as you do, his credentials. Many in the media, as he stated, knowing absolutely nothing about him played that game.

This battle for the survival of Western Civilization is too important.

Anyway, I have spent way too much time, this morning on this topic. I appreciate the manner in which we have responded, one to the other. Too many of these responses include the use of the invective.

Just as the good General ended his remarks:

Thank you for this opportunity

May God bless you and may God bless America.

Praise be to the Lord, my rock who trains my fingers for battle and my hands for war.

Thank You.

You are correct that Bremer was in charge of the events largely credited with creating the insurgency (dissolving the Iraqi army and de-Baathification) and that these events occured while Sanchez was in command in Iraq and over the objections of the military.

Do you have a source for your contention that Bremer was appointed by Powell? He reported to Rumsfeld.

I agree with everything you have said.

Please read my post #50.

It is particularly upsetting that those who are maligning an honorable man on these threads did not know him and did not work with him. But that is not important apparently.

These are the same media type folks about which he is talking. Not knowing the subject but getting the story in on the front page is all that matters even if it is wrong/a lie. The heck with the truth.

WE WERE NOT WINNING UNDER GENERAL SANCHEZ.

Yes we were. Saddam being captured and his two sons killed wasn't progress? Those successes happened on his watch.
