The award of the Nobel Peace Prize to Al Gore and the UNs top climate panel on Friday has prompted a fresh chorus of criticism from global warming skepticswith one dubbing the award a political gimmick. The former vice-president has an Oscar for his film on climate change, An Inconvenient Truth, and the Nobel prize proved a laurel too far for some of his detractors.
Czech President Vaclav Klaus cast doubt on Gores contribution to the cause of peace, the ostensible purpose of the Norwegian prize. In a statement, the climate change sceptic said he was a bit surprised that Al Gore has received a peace prize because the connection between his activities and world peace are vague and not very clear. In Norway, the main opposition party expressed its surprise at the decision. Gjermund Hagesaether, from the far-right Progress Party, said: We believe it is strange to give the prize to Al Gore for having made a film on climate that is subjective, one-sided and full of one-sided assertions.
In France, a sour note was sounded by a leading French climate sceptic, former Socialist education minister and award-winning geochemist Claude Allegre. He brushed off Fridays announcement as a political gimmick, saying: The amount of nonsense in Al Gores film! Its all politics, its designed to intervene in American politics. Its scandalous. Theres a presidential election upcoming in the United States, and its well known that Gore wants to run.
And one of the worlds foremost meteorologists called the theory that helped Al Gore win a share of the Nobel prize the product of people who dont understand how the atmosphere works. Dr William Gray, a pioneer in the science of seasonal hurricane forecasts, spoke to a packed lecture hall at the University of North Carolina and said humans were not responsible for global warming. Were brainwashing our children, said Gray, 78, a longtime professor at Colorado State University. Theyre going to the Gore movie and being fed all this. Its ridiculous.
As if you didn’t already have enough stories to PING your list to...
Everyone needs to be reminded about BIG OIL Al and how little he cares about the environment when it lines his pockets.

The Inconvenient Truth Al Gore Hopes You Forget!
So, I wake up this morning to hear Al Gore has won an Oscar for trying to save the world!
Then I went out and shoveled 18 of his global warming out of my driveway.
First question: Why didnt he do anything to try to save the environment during his 8 years as Vice President and how many years as a senator?
Some say the Vice President has no power, cant make policy, blah, blah.
Next question: Then why was he able to pull off selling one of our few oil reserves at Elk Hills in California to his big oil buddies at the expense of the environment and fuel reserves. This story was widely reported, but that was 10 years ago. How soon we forget.
http://www.corpwatch.org/article.php?id=468
[snip]Occidentals planned drilling of the Elk Hills doesnt only threaten the memory of the Kitanemuk [Indian tribe}. Environmentalists say a rare species of fox, lizard and the kangaroo rat would also be threatened by Oxys plans. A lawsuit has been filed under the Endangered Species Act. But none of that has given pause to Occidental or the politician who helped engineer the sale of the drilling rights to the federally-owned Elk Hills. That politician is Al Gore.
Gore recommended that the Elk Hills be sold as part of his 1995 Reinventing Government National Performance Review program. Gore-confidant (and former campaign manager) Tony Cohelo served on the board of directors of the private company hired to assess the sales environmental consequences. The sale was a windfall for Oxy. Within weeks of the announced purchase Occidental stock rose ten percent.
That was good news for Gore. Despite controversy over Dick Cheneys plans to keep stock options if elected, most Americans dont know that we already have a vice president with oil company stocks. Before the Elk Hills sale, Al Gore controlled between $250,000-$500,000 of Occidental stock (he is executor of a trust that he says goes only to his mother, but will revert to him upon her death). After the sale, Gore began disclosing between $500,000 and $1 million of his significantly more valuable stock.
Nowhere is Al Gores environmental hypocrisy more glaring than when it comes to his relationship with Occidental. While on the one hand talking tough about his big oil opponents and waxing poetic about indigenous peoples in his 1992 book Earth in the Balance, the Elk Hills sale and other deals show that money has always been more important to Al Gore than ideals.

The Nobel Prize is awarded by NORWAY, not Sweden.
Icecap (http://www.icecap.us/) is a great site for keeping up to date on both the scientific and political stories on global warming. Stories posted there do not question global climate changes but try to bring scientific understanding to the global warming hype by exposing unscientific studies and presenting alternative interpretations to charges of man-caused global warming.
Actually, the Peace Prize is awarded by big government socialists in Norway. The real awards do come from Sweden (science, etc).
Democrats Praise Gore Nobel Prize [semi-satire]
Oct. 13, 2007
“The Nobel Committee’s recognition of Vice President Gore shines a bright light on the most inconvenient truth of all — the selection of George Bush as president has endangered the peace and prosperity of the entire planet,” said presidential candidate, former senator John Edwards (D-N.C.). America can make amends in 2008 by electing me because I will appoint Mr. Gore World Environmental Czar.
Presidential contender Senator Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) applauded Al Gore for winning the Nobel Peace Prize. “I am glad to see that Als post-political career has been so successful, Clinton said. He has taken the moral high ground, soaring above the slings and arrows of the political battlefield. We wish him continued success in his educational efforts and hope he will be able to resist pressures to run for president.
Former president Jimmy Carter disagreed with Clintons aspiration for Gores future. As a previous Nobel Peace Prize laureate, I think winning this prize makes Mr. Gore the best qualified person in America to be president, Carter declaimed. I have called him numerous times to suggest that he run and even offered him my endorsement.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) issued a statement congratulating Gore for winning the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize, saying, By making ‘An Inconvenient Truth,’ he has done more for humanity than any other human being. The United States must now act. The New Direction Congress is completing work on a landmark energy bill that is our first step toward taking America back to a simpler, more frugal way of living and saving our planet.
Gore has been a frequent critic of Bush’s environmental policy, urging him last month to follow the example set by the late Republican President Ronald Reagan who, Gore says has taken personal action to reduce his contribution to global warming.
This was the second Nobel Peace prize awarded to a leading Democratic critic during Bush’s administration. The 2002 prize went to former President Jimmy Carter for his masterful handling of the Iranian hostage crisis during his presidency. In November of 1979, the new Iranian government under Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini invaded the U.S. embassy and took over 60 Americans hostage for over 400 days. The Nobel committee commended Carter for his patience under duress that enabled the crisis to be brought to a peaceful conclusion in January of 1981.
In related news, former president Carter said that if he had it to do over, he wouldnt have changed a single thing he did as president, citing his Nobel Prize as proof that he couldnt possibly have done a better job.

The Nobel Prize is awarded by NORWAY, not Sweden.
You are correct, sir. The original story got it wrong, too. Crap...
The Nobel is a private award - nothing we can do to influence it - maybe not buy Nobel products but there are no alternatives to their main money royalty source - the blasting cap.
The film claims that low-lying inhabited Pacific atolls "are being inundated because of anthropogenic global warming" but the judge ruled there was no evidence of any evacuation having yet happened.
The documentary speaks of global warming "shutting down the Ocean Conveyor" - the process by which the Gulf Stream is carried over the North Atlantic to western Europe. Citing the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the judge said that it was "very unlikely" that the Ocean Conveyor, also known as the Meridional Overturning Circulation, would shut down in the future, though it might slow down.
Mr Gore claims that two graphs, one plotting a rise in C02 and the other the rise in temperature over a period of 650,000 years, showed "an exact fit". The judge said that, although there was general scientific agreement that there was a connection, "the two graphs do not establish what Mr Gore asserts".
Mr Gore says the disappearance of snow on Mt Kilimanjaro was directly attributable to global warming, but the judge ruled that it scientists have not established that the recession of snow on Mt Kilimanjaro is primarily attributable to human-induced climate change.
The film contends that the drying up of Lake Chad is a prime example of a catastrophic result of global warming but the judge said there was insufficient evidence, and that "it is apparently considered to be far more likely to result from other factors, such as population increase and over-grazing, and regional climate variability."
Mr Gore blames Hurricane Katrina and the consequent devastation in New Orleans on global warming, but the judge ruled there was "insufficient evidence to show that".
Mr Gore cites a scientific study that shows, for the first time, that polar bears were being found after drowning from "swimming long distances - up to 60 miles - to find the ice" The judge said: "The only scientific study that either side before me can find is one which indicates that four polar bears have recently been found drowned because of a storm."That was not to say there might not in future be drowning-related deaths of bears if the trend of regression of pack ice continued - "but it plainly does not support Mr Gore's description".
Mr Gore said that coral reefs all over the world were being bleached because of global warming and other factors. Again citing the IPCC, the judge agreed that, if temperatures were to rise by 1-3 degrees centigrade, there would be increased coral bleaching and mortality, unless the coral could adapt. However, he ruled that separating the impacts of stresses due to climate change from other stresses, such as over-fishing, and pollution was difficult.
Nobel Prize shall from now on be referred to as the Goebbels Prize.
I thought it was a non publically funded award funded by Nobel's royalty money?
If so is it not more accurate to state it is awarded in Norway but not from the Norwegian state?
Why is the Nobel Peace Prize awarded in Oslo and all the other Nobel Prizes in Stockholm?
Alfred Nobel left no explanation as to why the prize for peace was to be awarded by a Norwegian committee while the other four prizes were to be handled by Swedish committees. In the will he wrote:
"The prizes for physics and chemistry shall be awarded by the Swedish Academy of Sciences; that for physiology or medical works by the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm; that for literature by the Academy in Stockholm, and that for champions of peace by a committee of five persons to be elected by the Norwegian Storting."
Peace Prize for fighting the weatherman?
The judge;s ruling has to do with showing the ‘documentary’ to a captive audience like a school room. If shown in a theater or if you buy the DVD for home use there is no such restriction because it is Gore’s opinion and his understanding of the so called facts and you are a willing participant in his so called truth. But a school kid can’t be forced to watch it and think it was the gospel truth without those few disclaimers.
See post #17. Learn something new on FR all the time. Anyone know what the “Norwegian Storting” is?
...for the Peace Prize, the Norwegian Nobel Committee consists of five members elected by the Norwegian Storting (the Norwegian parliament).

OK, but I assume the money for the prizes do not come from the Norwegian tax payers but from Nobel's royalty money held in trust.
Klaus is a vocal critic of the notion that any global warming is anthropogenic (man-caused). "Global warming is a false myth and every serious person and scientist says so."[4] He has also criticized the IPCC climate panel as a group of politicized scientists with one-sided opinions and one-sided assignments. He has said that other top-level politicians do not expose their doubts about global warming because "a whip of political correctness strangles their voices." [5]
In addition he says "Environmentalism should belong in the social sciences" along with other "isms" such as communism, feminism, and liberalism. President Klaus said that "environmentalism is a religion" and, in an answer to the questions of the U.S. Congressmen, a "modern counterpart of communism" that seeks to change peoples' habits and economic systems.[6]
In an article for Financial Times, Klaus called ambitious environmentalism "the biggest threat to freedom, democracy, the market economy and prosperity", hinted that parts of the present political and scientific debate on the environment are suppressing freedom and democracy, and asked for readers opposing the term "scientific consensus", saying that "it is always achieved only by a loud minority, never by a silent majority".[7] He had a Q&A session with some internet readers following the article [8]. He wrote that "Environmentalism, not preservation of nature (and of environment), is a leftist ideology.... Environmentalism is indeed a vehicle for bringing us socialist government at the global level. Again, my life in communism makes me oversensitive in this respect." He reiterated these statements at the local premiere of Martin Durkin's The Great Global Warming Swindle in June 2007, becoming the first head of state to endorse this movie. [9]
Will a Republican representative propose the 9 disclaimers before Algore's fiction is presented to US grade schoolers?
Thanks!
Gimmick or not, we should all be happy and encourage the warmers’ wizard to run for President on the Green ticket. Ralph as VP.
The award did not so much elevate Al Gore as it did erode the value of the award itself. Now we know with certainty that basically any crackpot can win a Nobel prize as long as they subscribe to the proper ideology.
In fact, his activities if anything are contributing to war, not peace. If you have two political classes one of which is determined and able to impose draconian restrictions on the other's lifestyle, even returning it to a Dark Ages subsistence living standard, there WILL BE a war. Not might be. Will be.
And yet again, we see the insight of Godwin's Law.
I googled “global warming crap” and got 10+ pages of hits. Maybe people are not as stupid as I fear.
As even Godwin pointed out, some references are appropriate, as was this one. The propaganda that surrounds global warming is shameful and for Nobel to reward that propaganda is beyond words.
That was GREAT!!!!
Whenever talking to a liberal about Gore... say, “I think he should have gotten the Nobel Prize in Science!!! Why would they give him a peace prize? He is so smart.”
Drum beat the Science spin.
The Nobel Peace Prize has nothing to do with GW or any other pseudo-scientific cant. Algore is full of baloney, but he is a Nobel Prize winner full of baloney.
No it wasn't. You just couldn't think of any way to express your words describing what you think is propaganda so you used the most extreme example you could think of. This is exactly the trap that Godwin was talking about. You couldn't resist its pull any more than you can resist gravity. That is why Godwin's Law has such insight into social commentary.
This is exactly the same type of thinking people use for when they say 'Bushitler.' Those people don't like Bush, but don't have the imagination to say how they feel. So they equate him with the evilest thing they can think of and consider themselves clever.
The Nobel Peace Prize has lost credibility over the years by showing “too much leg” as to its ideology. It should be noted that the year 2007 will mark the end of the Global Warming Hoax. Other than that, Rush Limbaugh should demand a recount!
Sent an email to the UK producer Friday asking when or if the movie (original or re-edited) was going to be released in the US. Currently the only place (besides E-bay) to get a copy is some organization called the "Nicene Council." I do have a personal copy which I downloaded from the internet before Google and You Tube took down the copy due to copyright complaints. If anyone has some better info on its showing in the US, it would be good to share.
I think your assumptions are in error - Nobel's royalties are still paid regardless of the ownership of his company and even the blasting caps made by competitors contains patents that pay out royalties to Nobel even if not made by Nobel's original company.
I know this will shock you but Martin Durkin who produced the documentary is a Marxist!!! In England the leading anti-Global Warming is a myth organization are Marxists!!!!!
http://www.monbiot.com/archives/1997/12/18/the-revolution-has-been-televised/
Martin Durkin, the director of the three programmes, describes himself as a Marxist: the only brand of Marxism which follows the line the series takes is the RCPs. The husband of his deputy, Against Natures assistant producer, is the co-author of the RCPs manifesto and Books Editor of Living Marxism.
Line by line, point by point, Against Nature follows the agenda laid down by the RCP. Greens, both the series and Living Marxism maintain, present themselves as radicals, but are really doom-mongering imperialists, engaged in the deification of Nature and the rejection of human progress. Global warming is nothing to worry about, while sustainable development is a conspiracy against people. Greens have plotted with the film industry to make science terrifying. Genetic engineering and human cloning are not to be feared but cherished, as they will liberate humanity from nature.
Thank the dear Lord that people from around the world see the same things that we do, (about Albore). Has the media or anyone ever asked just where he got his information from? What credentials make him an expert in this field? To my knowledge he NEVER attended a university and received a degree in this field, and IF he didn’t, that initself will blow holes in his story. How does he know how much ice is there to begin with. Then how does he know how much water will come from the melted ice, and how high it will make the sea level rise? That’s a big mystery to me. Does anyone know how he got the knowledge to figure this out, cuz I just don’t think he’s smart enough. LOL
Any patents there may have been have to have expired by now.
Irrespective of Durkin's political ideology, the film had a impressive lineup of anti-anthropogenic global warming advocates including scientists in several fields and at least one British MP.
From your link and related to a 1997 series ("Against Nature"):
It is inconceivable that Channel 4s top decision-makers also belong to the party. But many television executives hate environmentalism. They see it as a grim memento mori at the bottom of the picture, spoiling the good news about cars, clothes and consumerism. So when the film-makers suggested an all-out assault on environmentalists, their proposal fell on fertile ground. The revolution, as the RCP sees it, has been televised.
Well they want a candidate that #1) Hates Bush, #2) Further’s left wing causes and #3) advocates peace.
I nominate Osama bin Ladin for next year’s prize.
Thanks for posting all of those links.

To award Gore the Nobel for writing, producing, directing and starring in a movie making false claims is laughable if not downright humiliating.
