I found that extremely interesting... in a global non-takeover way. This may not turn out as the players wish.

I don’t like it either. Still, what would you do if you were Turkey. 30 of their citizens have recently been killed due to incursions onto their soil. Either they are wrong about who did it, or they have every right to be righteously pissed about it.

You are correct to point out the Kurdish region has been one of the best regions of the nation. And look, the last thing I want is for the Kurds to have problems. I will say that if the Kurds want to avoid this they should either come down on their own, or assure Turkey they don’t think the insurgents did come from Iraq, and then pledge their involvement in getting to the bottom of it.

These two groups need to work together despite their long term disagreements.

betcha the turks are not willing to take on the 20 million kurds that live in turkey, much less than the kurdistan regional government. since the hq of the pkk is in iran, let them have at em.

BTW, why aren’t the Kurdish leaders smacking down their own, so this doesn’t get blown out of proportion?

That is what I have been wondering. They have an excellent Military in the Kurdish North, so excellent they don't want help from the regular Iraqi Military.

It would be in their best interests to wipe out the rebels. They are no better than terrorists.

I doubt the Kurdish leadership is actually involved, but they could help ease tensions.

I think you are right about both of those items in your last sentence.

“I wonder - what would we do if we were in their place?”

If Mexico killed 13 of our soldiers we would court martial the dead soldiers.

Too many here are fooled by them. I wonder what their comments were on FR in '03 when turkey denied us access to Northern Iraq? I'll bet they're whistling a different tune now. Turkey our friend, pfft, what utter hog-wash.

Let's see about those bases when they're told thank you but no thank you on their joining the EU.

Our side of the isle is going to have to start playing hardball at some point. That point should have been when Bush took office. He give Bill a pass and the rest is history. We tried to play nice, and we got our arses handed to us, and still are.

Thompson has some fire in the belly and so does Hunter. These guys could clean the place up if they were the team and won.

I agree with your comments.

Ouch! Closer to the truth than I'd like.

But if you were a citizen of Turkey, how would you want your government to respond?

i’m aware of all that. frankly since there are Republicans who have signed on to this as well over the years (Dennis Hastert tried to bring it to the floor as well), i think it is more and issue of coming through for the Armenians. it has been tried and tried and tried - and never passed. no guarantee it will be this time.

No one, other than Turkey is saying it is the wrong thing to do, it's just the wrong time to do it.  How about we condemn England for Imperialism while were at it? It serves no good right now and only hurts us. It's not like turkey is going anywhere, we can pass meaningless resolutions about something that happened 100 years ago later. Are we trying to get someone told before they die or something?

as much as i detest the Dems and their war against this war, i don’t this this is calculated as part of it.

It is part of the Left's plan, why else do it, the Left has never had any respect for History, they go to great lengths to re-write history every chance they get. The Left is completely committed to our defeat in Iraq and this is a golden opportunity for them, they can do something Al Qaeda and the rest of the Islamic Jehadist cant, cut off our supply lines.

The only way the Left can get elected is to discredit the Right, they have to make conservatives look incompetent in order to run against us. They have no other choice because they know they can't actually run on their agenda, if they ever told the American People what it is they plan to do if they get in power (kill babies, promote homo-sexuality, raise taxes, outlaw Christianity, remove the 2nd Amendment,  turn our country over to Socialism, etc.) the American People wouldn't elect them to take out the trash let alone hold public office.

by the way, i have a cousin at Centcom and one in Kuwait, both in the Air Force and working hard to win this war.

Tell them "thanks for their service" for me and let them know that they, and all of their bothers and sisters in arms, are in our daily thoughts and prayers.

Well, I’d like to think you’re right. I’m not convinced of that. I would really prefer for the PKK to come out and condemn the actions of the few, and promise to take care of this situation themselves. If they could cooperate with Turkey when Turkey is the injured party, it would go a very long way toward resolving this issue.

...when turkey denied us access to Northern Iraq?

Many of us here were astonished at Turkey's decision not to let us enter through their area when the war began. It cost us a lot of time and lives. Of Iraqis as well as our own personnel. Plus slowed down the process immensely.

A lot of Kurdistan is in Southern Turkey, and they were afraid of losing some of it. Foolish paranoid move on their part IMO. They would love to invade Northern Iraq and take over the Oil deposits there.

The Turkish government that engaged in those actions against the Armenians was the Sultanate. Mustafa Kemal overthrew that government and turkey has been a different sort of country ever since. Pelosi et al are trying to push Turkey back into the Islamist fold in their ongoing effort to Defeat the United States.

Polosi is an idiot I agree, but the genocide of the Armenian Christians by the Turkish isamofascists did occur

Can you share your sources here? Genocide is defined as being:
The systematic and planned extermination of an entire national, racial, political, or ethnic group.
Thanks

The Kurds have followed their self-interest just like Turkey has, as it relates to this war. The Kurds were glad to cooperate because it gave legitimacy to their semi-autonomy. Yes they are still a part of Iraq, but they are pretty much running things in their region as I understand it.

Turkey has allowed us overflights and ground routes. For all the talk of Turkey not being our friend, they have none-the-less been allowing us to use their assetts for our purposes. Now maybe it hasn’t been to the extent we would like, but they have been helping.

It has wanted to enter the Kurdish north since the war started. It has not done so at our request. It’s citizens have been attacked and it has every right to be angry about it.

Overall, I don’t disagree with your comments as much as this probably seems, but I just don’t think it’s right to treat Turkey like Syria or Iran. It simply isn’t the same and we should acknowledge that.

I washed my hands of them when they did that and I haven't looked back since. From that moment on I knew where Turkey's loyalties belonged and it wasn't with us.

They would love to invade Northern Iraq and take over the Oil deposits there.

Kirkuk and Mosul. They want them desperately.
