City Hikes Boy Scouts' Rent by $199,999 over Gay Ban (Philadelphia)
Philadelphia Inquirer ^ | 10/18/2007 | Joseph A. Slobodzian

The Boy Scouts of America's refusal to bend its rules to permit gay scouts will cost the organization's local chapter $200,000 a year if it wishes to keep its headquarters in a city-owned building on Logan Square.

Representatives of the Boy Scouts of America's Cradle of Liberty Council were notified that to remain in their 79-year-old landmark headquarters, they needed to pay the city a "fair market" rent, Fairmount Park Commission president Robert N.C. Nix said yesterday. Currently, the rent is $1 a year....

Rent control in Philly, like other jurisdictions, only applies to residential leases.

” I am not sure the Scouts need to be 200k a year but One Dollar is ridiculous. The Scouts do not need to be receiving Welfare from the city. Raise the rent.”

Well, thinking that the “subsidy” to the BSA comes back as the world’s best bargain in social services, compared to most of the gov’t programs.

"ut why should the scouts get free land from the city?"

Why should womens shelters, community clubs, Sports clubs etc etc etc. There's a very long list that get "free" land/building use from cities. Screw them all I say, especially sports clubs. They suck hundreds of millions out of the cities...Screw them all, why should tax payers subsidize privately owned franchises, owned by rich elitists who rake in countless millions from them. They can pay their own way, pay rent, build their own stadiums, pay for the roads and sewer services, the policing, and everything else they burden the city's taxpayers with.

"Currently, the rent is $1 a year...."

But I'll bet they would rent the space to homosexual organizations for the original $!/year amount.

"The LAND is the city’s, but the BUILDING belong to the Scouts."

The Scouts could still meet someplace else while they litigate this building/land problem.

Why should they be charged any more than the average rate the city charges other groups for rent?

Philadelphia has always been corrupt and unsafe but lately they also want to become a mecca for rump rangers.

Good should the Scouts leave they should blow up the building!

Do you understand commercial real estate?

If a tenant improves a landlord's property the improvements become the property of the landlord.

“Again, no private organization, no matter their agenda, should get Free Land from the Tax Payer.

Not the Boy Scouts
Not the Girl Scouts”

Nor the U.S. Military.

Fidel is closely watching so he can push us out of Gitmo. He only gets $10 a year.

Let me underline this as a common occurrence across the nation. This is exactly the same thing that happened to the Scout facilities in San Diego. The scouts spent millions of dollars to improve the facility that is open to other organizations on a first-come/first-serve basis a fair part of the year.

There was a lawsuit by a family of athiests as I recall who have never even tried to use the facility - and they forced the city to order the scouts out or pay “fair market” rent for the property.

Understand that the scouts received the property with the understanding that they would make improvements to the property, and would receive a break on the lease because of the money they have put into the property to make the improvements.

Also note that San Diego has other similar arrangements with the Girl Scouts and other organizations. The BSA is specifically being targeted because of their requirement of being spiritual.

I imagine that Phili had a similar arrangement, i.e. you make improvements to the property on your dime in liu of rent. Now they renig on the agreement. I assume this gives the scouts the right to tear down the building as they leave? Serve the city right!

Then you may need to look into the fact that they did not receive “free land”. How do you think this country was settled before real estate laws and land ownership?

Practically every building on the Eastern Seaboard built during the colonial eras were built on “free land”.

The BSA improved the land at their cost, maintained the building at their cost, paid for utilities at their cost and now the city wants to capitalize on the BSA’s investment for the last 80 years.

The rent might be $1 per year, but the maintenance of the building, grounds and utilities run a whole bunch more. The same can be said of the Balboa Park Scout camp in San Diego where the Scouts operate and maintain the facility. It is open to the public as well as use by the Scouts. Chase the Scouts out and the liability will fall on the taxpayers. There plenty of church organizations that would be happy to host the Scouts. It's the taxpayers and public that enjoy use of the facilities at the Scout's expense that will be fleeced for this support of the perverted gays.

There are private parties in Southern California that are hosting the Scouts on their property to put them out of reach of the shrill leftists that seek to run them off any use of "public" property. The Scouts (and their parents) are taxpayers too.

As a resident of San Diego, I had to cover the costs of law enforcement used at gay pride parades. That expense far exceeds any support the Scouts received from the city. The gay loving city council is blind to that detail.

None should be getting free rent from the tax payer.

Actually, the lease would be for the land. The scouts built the building and presumably still own it.

Shh! Let them read it on their own. It's so fun to watch their little heads explode.

Dollar a year rental rates usually mean the group is exceptionally valued or "they used to own the building" ~ so that means we need more information to fully evaluate the situation.

At the same time it's better for Scouting to leave Philadelphia than that it be allowed to be taken over by the homosexual lobby.

I’m quite aware of that, my own church does. Why would the City of Philadelphia (Brotherly Love?) be any different.

Did you miss the fact, that although the city owns the land, the scouts built the building in 1928, in return for the $1 year rent?

I didn't know that. So, the city is breaking its agreement with the Boy Scouts because city officials are intolerant toward the BSA's religious views.

What a revolting hell hole Philadelphia has become.
