Now the city can move in the Gay,Lesbian,Transgendered & I Don’t Know What Alliance into the same building for $1 a year.

You'd think that a city that averages a murder a day would have better things to worry about.

Again, no private organization, no matter their agenda, should get Free Land from the Tax Payer.

Not the Boy Scouts
Not the Girl Scouts

The article didn’t say anything about “free office space”. The BSA built the “landmark” building on city land. I guess the city should look at reimbursing the BSA for the building should they kick them off the land.

It pays to carefully read the article in question and as far as the “welfare” comments go... Do you contribute to the BSA? You apparently seem to have forgotten that millions of dollars of BSA funds have been wasted fighting all of the lawsuits filed against the BSA.

As usual, the BSA improves the land provided to them for beneficial use then get kicked out afterwards.

Please...they need to charge the current rent for that huge place. I would say 12,000 a month would be about right for that area and size of the building. One dollar is stealing from the tax payers (I am not one by the way for that city).

a barrage of opinion pieces, emails, and other means of letting the left know what we think are in order.

Your talking about Philidelphia here. The former cradle of liberty is now the cradle of socialism. It is run by a bunch of leftist, socialist, stalinist, democrats. Remember the vote "count" in the last election for president. If not for the "City of Brotherly Love" Pa. would have gone for bush. Same in most all "blue" states. The big cities in most of them have turned into welfare socialist enclaves. It is a lost cause.

Our Kool-Aid drinking free traders missed that key issue -- as they do so many-- like this one:

They should relocate to a friendlier community and let Philly continue to rot.

The reason they call it Boy Scouts is because the people they serve are boys-- boys who are stuck in Philadelphia by circumstances of their family's living arrangements and, thus, unable to relocate anywhere.

Yes, I'd like the city out of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. But I'd like even better to remove the vermin infesting the city so it would become liveable again.

What the B.S.A. should do is bring a discrimination and breach of contract lawsuit, for starters. It sounds like they have grounds for both.

The land belongs to the City of Philadelphia but has been leased since 1928 for that token sum to the scouts, who built the landmark Beaux Arts building.

It is fairly common for a governmental entity to rent land at a nominal fee (usually $1.00 a year) when the community (including its politicians) wants to give a conspicuous location in the public square to an organization.

Even if the Scouts decided to pay the rent, this is just the beginning of the effort to drive them out.

Personally, I hope they either demolish the building or take it apart and relocate it to a piece of land (outside of Philadelphia) that they own.

The first sentence in the (poorly-written) article says the building is city-owned. If the scouts own it, I stand corrected. That still doesn’t change my opinion on the below-market rent of government land by a private organization.

You sound like an idiot. You figure the Boy Scouts of America is a profit-making organization?

So therefore, every non-profit organization in Philadelphia should get free land from the city.

So churches that qualify as tax exempt should be paying “fair market value” as well? The BSA provides a valuable service to the community, you could call it a barter system but you seem to be quite contrarian in your opinion of that.

I may not agree, but as a private organization, the Boy Scouts should be able to admit whomever they wish.

OTOH, as a private organization, what makes them entitled to free government office space?

Look into the tax breaks that professional sports teams get.

The benefits from the Boy Scouts more than make up what the city would collect in rent.

The article is confusing. It starts out calling it a “city-owned building.” Then later it mentions the Scouts built the building on city-owned land. Did they build it and give it to the city?

The scouts built the building for the government in 1928 at no charge and have maintained and it ever since. The government doesn’t put any money into it. The $1/year is for the land that it is on as it is officially a government owned property. Here, Philly is just reneging on a very old agreement because they hate the boyscouts.

Come one...say it ain’t so!

SO the new rent proposed breaks down to 16,666.66 per month. I wonder if all those 6’s had anything do do wiht determining the value of the rent.

Come on BSA...get out of the entitlement handout scenario. many churches are providing your space at the local level at no charge. This alone should allow ou to buy a steel building in a BSA-friendly community and never have to deal with the “brotherly love” crowd any more!

"ut why should the scouts get free land from the city?"

Why should womens shelters, community clubs, Sports clubs etc etc etc. There's a very long list that get "free" land/building use from cities. Screw them all I say, especially sports clubs. They suck hundreds of millions out of the cities...Screw them all, why should tax payers subsidize privately owned franchises, owned by rich elitists who rake in countless millions from them. They can pay their own way, pay rent, build their own stadiums, pay for the roads and sewer services, the policing, and everything else they burden the city's taxpayers with.

Let me underline this as a common occurrence across the nation. This is exactly the same thing that happened to the Scout facilities in San Diego. The scouts spent millions of dollars to improve the facility that is open to other organizations on a first-come/first-serve basis a fair part of the year.

There was a lawsuit by a family of athiests as I recall who have never even tried to use the facility - and they forced the city to order the scouts out or pay “fair market” rent for the property.

Understand that the scouts received the property with the understanding that they would make improvements to the property, and would receive a break on the lease because of the money they have put into the property to make the improvements.

Also note that San Diego has other similar arrangements with the Girl Scouts and other organizations. The BSA is specifically being targeted because of their requirement of being spiritual.

I imagine that Phili had a similar arrangement, i.e. you make improvements to the property on your dime in liu of rent. Now they renig on the agreement. I assume this gives the scouts the right to tear down the building as they leave? Serve the city right!

Then you may need to look into the fact that they did not receive “free land”. How do you think this country was settled before real estate laws and land ownership?

Practically every building on the Eastern Seaboard built during the colonial eras were built on “free land”.

The BSA improved the land at their cost, maintained the building at their cost, paid for utilities at their cost and now the city wants to capitalize on the BSA’s investment for the last 80 years.

The rent might be $1 per year, but the maintenance of the building, grounds and utilities run a whole bunch more. The same can be said of the Balboa Park Scout camp in San Diego where the Scouts operate and maintain the facility. It is open to the public as well as use by the Scouts. Chase the Scouts out and the liability will fall on the taxpayers. There plenty of church organizations that would be happy to host the Scouts. It's the taxpayers and public that enjoy use of the facilities at the Scout's expense that will be fleeced for this support of the perverted gays.

There are private parties in Southern California that are hosting the Scouts on their property to put them out of reach of the shrill leftists that seek to run them off any use of "public" property. The Scouts (and their parents) are taxpayers too.

As a resident of San Diego, I had to cover the costs of law enforcement used at gay pride parades. That expense far exceeds any support the Scouts received from the city. The gay loving city council is blind to that detail.

Dollar a year rental rates usually mean the group is exceptionally valued or "they used to own the building" ~ so that means we need more information to fully evaluate the situation.

At the same time it's better for Scouting to leave Philadelphia than that it be allowed to be taken over by the homosexual lobby.
