Illusionist Copperfield investigated in federal case out of Seattle
Seattle PI ^ | 10/18/07 | Levi Pulkkinen

Posted on 10/19/2007 5:11:00 AM PDT by jimbo123

Federal authorities in Seattle apparently are involved in an investigation of magician David Copperfield, and a source with knowledge of the investigation told the Las Vegas Review-Journal the case involves "possible sexual misconduct by the illusionist."

P-I reporter Levi Pulkkinen inquired Thursday night with the newspaper and called local authorities here for comment.

Robbie Burroughs, spokeswoman for the FBI's Seattle office, declined to discuss any aspects of the case on the grounds that the investigation is pending. She did say that the case originated in Seattle, Pulkkinen reports.

According to the Las Vegas newspaper, Copperfield's accuser said the misconduct occurred outside the country, but the case came under the FBI's jurisdiction because the accuser was a U.S. citizen, the paper's source said.

Copperfield's lawyer, David Chesnoff, confirmed the investigation Thursday, according to the newspaper. Agents are said to have "raided Copperfield's personal belongings Wednesday night," according to the FOX television news station in Las Vegas.

Another TV news station reported that 12 agents "stormed" a warehouse connected to Copperfield, seizing a computer hard drive, a digital camera system and nearly $2 million in cash.

"If in fact those are the allegations, unfortunately false allegations, are all too often made against famous individuals," Chesnoff is quoted as saying. "But we are confident the investigation will conclude favorably."

Chesnoff also issued a written statement on behalf of Copperfield: "We understand there is an investigation, are in touch with the investigators, and are respecting the confidentiality of the investigation."

Isn't he married to some hottie? Or did they split up? (Or maybe I'm thinking of someone else).

If any of this turns out to be true, it always amazes me how guys who are married to beautiful women already, throw it away chasing others (not that looks are everything, but for most guys, they are at least something).

I wonder if he was performing that old Frito Bandito magic trick. This was years ago, but he would point his pistoleros at the unsuspecting marks and turn their Frito’s cornchips -—— eeeentoo myyyyy Frito’s cornchips.

Sorry, my Gaydar is broken, I'll take your word for it. But I'm just trying to figure out what sort of sexual activities are so far off limits these days as to get raided, and all I can come up with is pedophilia. Gay pedophilia perhaps, but unless kids are involved, why would they raid his home?

I think they seized his computer to look for kiddie porn.

Couple questions: What is $2 million doing lying around a warehouse, and how is that evidence in a sexual misconduct allegation where the deed apparently took place overseas? This guy probably makes the kind of money where he could legitimately get that kind of money in cash if he wanted to. Law enforcement always considers itself entitled to take any cash they find anywhere these days.

Right. They wouldn't bust the doors down to investigate adultery. I also assumed pedophilia. Isn't most pedophilia gay pedophilia?

The police probably weren’t looking for the $2.0MM. They were only interested in the digital cameras and the hard drives. The money was probably an unexpected surprise.

What was Dianna possibly right about ?

I was guessing that the problem was kiddie porn. Most posters on the thread last night were guessing tax evasion.

In fairness, the other article mentioned seizing a computer and the cash, but said nothing about a camera.

I guess we'll have to wait and see how this plays out.

Got to admit, I don't know much about it. And about the only other kind I can think of is horny schoolteachers seducing students like Debra LeFavre.

I must admit, that doesn't creep me out as bad as gay pedophilia, like those two freaks that have been busted the past few days in Vegas and Thailand.

Presumably intelligent procurers of children prefer to be paid in cash, in order to avoid a paper trail.

This guy probably makes the kind of money where he could legitimately get that kind of money in cash if he wanted to.

I'm sure he does - however, he needs to report it like anyone else.

Law enforcement always considers itself entitled to take any cash they find anywhere these days.

When a person who is involved in criminal activity happens to have enormous sums of cash lying around, it generally wasn't obtained from a successful paper delivery route, and it generally isn't intended for buying Christmas cookies.

It's part and parcel of their enterprise.

Storming a house and seizing 2 million in cash does not suggest sexual misconduct to me.

It suggests selling something or laundering something illegal

The 2 million in cash does not surprise me. Cooperfield is exceptionally wealthy and could be part of an attempt at evading taxes. That would be my guess if there is any illegality to it.

Cooperfield is also the largest collector of magic items on the planet. He has what he calls the International Museum & Library of the Conjuring Arts. But your chances of getting into it are about zero. It has near 100,000 items in it. Many costing tens of thousands and hundreds of thousands of dollars. Others are items you just say "why?". Like the counter from the magic shop he bought his first magic trick at as a kid.

How does he fill the place? He has a team of people that roam the planet attending garage sales, auctions, estate sales, magic shops, 2nd hand stores, etc... Likely, many of the non 5 and 6 figure items are paid for in cash.

As someone with high up connections in the world of magic, I have experienced Mr. Cooperfield up close and have many a story. But due to the magicians code, I'm saying nothing!

Don't know if it's that, since many magicians who perform slight of hand tricks take very good care of their hands (manicures, etc.). I know Copperfield is mostly known these days for his big illusions, but I remember that he used to do a lot of close-up stuff with cards and such.

Anyway, instead of looking at his hands, I think I would rather look at the picture of his ex-wife that was posted. Wow, she's almost as hot as my wife!

Government agents love to seize any cash they find as it is exceptionally difficult for the owner to get it back. Even if they have a withdrawl receipt form their bank stapled to it from a transaction 2 minutes ago.
