EAU CLAIRE, Wis. - The city's Archery Park may need a name change. How about No-Archery Park?
Tom Draper and his bowhunting friends have practiced archery at the park for more than 20 years, and he was surprised recently when he found a sign that cited a city ordinance prohibiting firearms -- including bows and arrows.
"Several archers that I've talked to are kind of in disbelief," Draper said. "For all these years it's been there for the public to use. ... It was so convenient. And there was the camaraderie. During peak time it wasn't uncommon to have seven or eight guys down there."
The park is next to the Eau Claire River, and the city had developed earthen berms and even an archery tower for deer hunters to practice shooting from a platform.
Wooded hillsides helped provide barriers to arrows flying out of the park, but it wasn't enough, according to Parks Superintendent Phil Johnson.
The park was closed to archery in September after a neighbor complained of finding an arrow in his yard, Johnson said. It was the latest of several similar complaints from neighbors over 15 years or more, he said.
"Everybody's been most gracious about it up to this point, but the person has a legitimate concern," Johnson said.

Throw-down arrows?
I think that Red States everywhere should start designating leftist free zones. Any leftist steps foot in one of those zones, it’s open season.
Always missing in these cases is EVIDENCE. Was the recovered arrow bagged and dusted for fingerprints? Can it be matched to any arrows used by any archers? Where was it purchased?
Shooting ranges have this problem all the time. Everytime the accused have had the backbone to investigate the allegations have turned out to be suspicious at best.
Best regards,
Umm... if arrows are passing over the back-stop, and into folk’s yards, it’s not a safe back-stop. Archery enthusiasts would feel pretty bad if one of their errant arrows shish-kabob’d some innocent sun-bather.
This seems like a pretty reasonable ban to me.
What kind of addled government brain confuses firearms with bows & arrows????
Archery enthusiasts have a pretty good idea of where all their arrows go and usually make a serious attempt to recover them, they are expensive and reusable.
Some reasons archery is preferred in hunting is because they are close shots, silent and not disruptive to the community.
If this activity has gone on for twenty years the case file of negligence should be accessible and documented.
Best regards,
I guess the musscums were afraid they would be used as targets.
ANON.
Fixing the backstop wouldn’t be an option? We have to ban archery?
I think what is going on is that city attorneys are afraid they will be sued if something even remotely close to dangerous happens as a result of the archery in the park.
They are correct.
Leftists have this stuff down to a science.
Reminds me of the shooting range where I practice. There’s a high-end housing development with golf course that is over 5 miles downrange from our high-power range, and is over a couple of ridges. They came by the range house complaining of the bullets that landed on their golf course, and showed us several UNFIRED .30-06 rounds. The rangemaster, being of quick mind, pulled out a couple of golf balls and said we were tired of those things landing on our range and endangering the shooters there. They got the message really quickly.
OK, so fix the d***ed thing.
Archery enthusiasts would feel pretty bad if one of their errant arrows shish-kabobd some innocent sun-bather.
Absolutely. This range, though, apparently has been in use for about twenty years without there having been a single accident serious enough to include in the article.
This seems like a pretty reasonable ban to me.
Only if you believe that the archers were irresponsible in that they recklessly used an usafe backstop for the past twenty years. If that were true, shouldn't the range have been shut down many years ago?
All of them. We can not shoot inside the Colorado Springs city limits now. Such weapons are considered “Dangerous”. Even a kids 20 lb bow, under supervision will get you fined.
So, someone there needs to take a hint and open an archery shop with an indoor range, and put insurance on it, and make some money now.
So if you move next door to an archery range, it is the range’s fault if an errant arrow is found goes in your yard?
Most of these claims turn out to be exaggerated, if not totally fake. And if the berm was insufficient to protect the neighbors, the solution is to improve the berm, not ban the activity.
Based on years of experience, however, my opinion is that the claims are 100% false.
I’m unclear on how the “fire” in “firearm” applies to a bow and arrow.
Well an accident MIGHT happen, some day.
We had an archery range set up in our back yard when I was a kid. A few bales of hay and a wooden fence were our backstop.
I wonder if darts will be the next to be banned.
I... Call... For... A... National... Registry... Of... Arrows... (it’s for the children, you know)
Got the iraqi 2 boolets pic???
See my #13.
Did you forget the sarcasm tag?
“If the arrow won’t nock, you must let my client walk.”
??????? No I do not.
Best regards,
Thanks mag, nice improv on removing the shafts...lolol
